Thankfully we're (almost) on time this month! Twenty-One maps have been constructed by an eclectic variety of mappers for The Adventures of Square! Those uncouth ruffian circles are at it again, and it's up to you to get out there and show them whose the Squayor! WAD File: Speed Squared Release Thread Port: GZDoom IWAD: Requires Adventures of Square Resources: Not compiled with AoS pk3 and required for some maps is the extended Square E2 Texture Pack. Comments: MegaWAD created as the eighth edition of the PUSS series. Maps are ordered in chronology of submission. Rules/gimmicks mappers followed are in the original post (SEE BELOW). Maplist: (If you're reading this, then I haven't edited the screenshots into this post yet.) Map01: Another PUSS event, another boon of maps by @Death Bear. If there is one thing he's proven, it's that he loves to map, and quickly. The opening map to Speed Squared is a Squareful homage to the iconic Hangar (E1M1) from The Ultimate Doom, with it's own unique twists and turns to truly make this level put you at Square's Gate. Map02: @Cheesewheel returns to the PUSS for a fourth consecutive event with a few words on what it's like to conform to average social standards. While Bumble-Bee intercourse intercourse may be pretty hip to some people, this map objects that, yes, it is cool to be normal. Map03: Being one of the developers of The Adventures of Square, @Jimmy knows a thing or two about making square maps. His second map for a PUSS event, "Dam 'N' Blast!" is a paean from a seasoned and well-venerated mapping veteran. Map04: Often curious minds wonder as to the origination of certain facets to daily life. Where do babies come from? Why is the sky blue? @Danlex asks a more important question: "Where do our cheeseburgers come from?" The answer may shock you. Map05: PUSS 6 timer @DynamiteKaitorn/Heich returns in April to tell a story that happened over there on the river Tiber. The Circles were a ruse. The Romans were behind it all along I tell you! Or was it little green men? As a fanboy of all things truth, I will climb any mountain to find the answers! Thankfully, Heich provides! The mountains. Not the truth, unfortunately. Map06: None other than the voice of Square himself, @Baratus, joins in on the fun to deliver a grand map featuring a wide and sweeping canyon of... cream. Unlike Danlex's map that told the origin of the Cheeseburger, it's best you don't ask where the cream comes from. Map07: It's become tradition at this point to accept the fact that @Death Bear doesn't settle for just one map. We wouldn't have it any other way. Deadengon is in the map07 slot (teeechnically e1a7), so... appropriately we've got ourselves a rather Dead Simple map. I don't know what that means but apparently "Dead Simple" has something to do with the video game franchise "Doom." Unfortunately, I don't know what that is so I can't really comment much more. Map08: HAHA! Bet I had you fooled in that last description. Alas! I had played Doom before all along! My ignorance was a ruse! And that has brought us to the eighth map, Tricks and Trapezoids. This map is a reference too! To um... errrr.. uhm... Map09: Go boldly, where Square has gone before, into @Scypek2's Relentless Void. The mapper's third consecutive PUSS event, this map sees you jumping in and out of low and normal gravity in a space station set amidst the far reaches of that beautiful mozzarella moon. Map10: Another PUSS third timer, @myolden takes the same stance that Cheesewheel did. I offer only this counter-point. Map11: @Peccatum Mihzamiz returns to PUSS for a third time. Funnily enough, he is the third third timer in a row! Funny how things like that work out. Anyways. Peccatum delivers a grandiose and large map full of jerks, goofballs, and circles for you to remind that it's hip to be square. Map12: @Jimmy's second map wins pun of the year. Hands down. Back to the moon again. This time I hope you brought tortilla chips... cause things are about to get saucy. See! I can do it too! Map13: A PUSS first timer, @Cacodemon187 delivers an action packed spectacle set atop an ocean. Seems those damned circles were doing some kind of oil-dredging. Like the mapper said: "All you gotta do is go in and shoot the bad guys!" Map14: Another PUSS first timer, @Pinchy drops you deep into a sewer system for Map14. Thankfully, the water in this map is (mostly) clear. Although, whose to say that the blue circle people don't pee blue. Just food for thought really. Map15: Danlex's second map sees you running toward evil down the famous suspended Godlden Square Bridge. I'm really upset that Danlex didn't program one of these. But I can understand his creative decisions for omitting such a thing. Map16: Mmmmm.... Cheeeesecake. Actually, personally speaking, I'm not a huge fan of cheescake. Not that it matters anyway, because @BlooberryPi3's map is much more delicious than the real thing. Hopefully we get to see the Key Lime Pie factory in the Speed Squared sequel next year! Map17: I have a saying. Fire and Ice go together like fire and pretty much everything else. After a few minutes you'll just have fire. That's irrelevent. A juicy juxtaposition between hot and cold, this map proves a much more apt union: @Vortale and map editors. Map18: Death Bear is responsible for 23% of this wad. How so may you ask? Unicorn Skull is his daughter. With this map she delivers a full spectrum of wonderful colors for you to wreck the halls to. Well... that is if you don't have a Geordi like visor on. Look okay, I haven't seen Reading Rainbow in years. I had to make a Lt. Geordi reference. I had to! Map19: Another Bear cub! This time Death Bear's son, Doom Cat, delivers us an Underhalls inspired map. This is Doom cat's secon PUSS map, the first being in Clandestine Castle Crashing, and the Bear family's second PUSS submission to be inspired by Underhalls. Map20: If I had seen that Tom Cruise film, I could make a pun here. Likewise, if I had played the map I could make a pun here. By the way, not counting his children's maps, this is Death Bear's 13th PUSS map. Lest I'm forgetting some, that's an insane number. Hats off to him. Map21: Rounding out the megawad is another map I haven't tested. Mine! Yeah baby, I put the speed in didn't test my map! *KA-THUNK* Did you hear that? That was me dropping the microphone when I fell to the floor crying! WE LIVE FOR SPEED BABYYYY!!!! Pheeeeeew! Another month, yet another megaWAD. This version has quite a bit of work needed before a final version can be sent out, but I gotta say that I'm pretty excited to send this bad boy out for testing and to craft it into a unique experience over the next month. Twenty-One maps is a pretty sweet number, considering I turned twenty-one this month. This was our first foray into a total conversion and it turned out incredibly well. You may have read my teaser a few paragraphs ago, but if you didn't, I will definitely be revisiting this resource pack for a future event. Whilst mapping outside of the sweet sweet comfort of Doom's familiarity was fun... it was time we jumped back into the doom saddle and journeyed out into nascent alien worlds... I'm really tired right now) Spoiler Greetings and Salutations! Welcome to the (real) eight edition of the Pineapple Under the Sea Speedmapping series! Yet again we’re here mapping, but quickly! Did you know that eight is a prime number? I didn’t. I’m not really sure what that means, besides being a wielder of the Matrix of Leadership of course. Either way, I think that I am thinking of the wrong cartoon, because this month we’ll be mapping using the devkit to Adventures of Square, a game developed by our very own joyous @Jimmy and a small team known as Big Brik. This game was made using the GZDoom engine, and by extension, Doom Builder! Ergo, resources are available for us to make more content for it. It features a whole arsenal of fun splattery weapons, as well as a shapely army of wrongdoing cartoon villains set to put you in a corner. And... well nobody puts square in a corner! Maps will be completely different than your standard Doom levels. We're truly going on an adventure here folks. Due to the nature of the resource pack, rules will be rather light this month. - 10 Hour Mapping Limit - Maps must be built with Jumping/Crouching in mind. UDMF Format will be required. - Maps are required to be built with the Square resources - Maps are highly encouraged to use as many unique square features as possible. You’ll only really get to know what these are if you play it… so uh… get to it. - Maps are due to either this thread or my discord on April 23rd 11:59 PM EST Your mapping time can be nonconsecutive. Your timer will only go down when you are mapping, scripting or playtesting. Speedmaps will be under the honor rule. Neither you nor I can prove if a map went over the time limit or not, but one can kind of see what is and is not a speedmap. If you cheat, people will notice. Any time in Slade used to give a custom sky, midi, etc. is outside of your mapping time. I would recommend spending some time looking over the texture pack before you begin mapping, so that you don’t waste time scrolling. (Likewise, play a good chunk of AoS before start Once your time is up, if you haven’t beaten your map, please spend time to verify that your level is beatable. Bug fixing is for fixing bugs, not adding new areas to your map. Your bug fixing period should be spent balancing ammo and fixing any potential gameplay errors, such as texture misalignment or soft locks. I’m generally okay with you sending me as many fixes as you make, as long as these fixes don’t overhaul any major sections of your map. You’re not supposed to be mapping after your time is up, you’re supposed to polish what you have. Baratus Posted April 8, 2021 I'm having trouble getting GZDoom Builder to load the Square "IWAD". I've downloaded the .cfgs in the devkit, but my only option seems to be to add square1.pk3 from the 2.1 official release under Square (ZDoom). But it gives an error saying it can't load the resources from the .pk3, so I don't have any textures or actors or anything. What am I missing here? 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Please play and comment! v2 Changelog: Fixed the super obvious z-fighting on dam in first area that appeared in GL. Made dam explosion sequence slightly more dramatic and added in Square dialogue! Added a custom texture for the switch that triggers the explosion. Some enemy and item adjustment. (No difficulties yet still.) Added a sector fade to underwater sections. Increased waterfall speeds. Random texture alignment fixes. Corrected swimming sign alignment. Adjusted various sector heights to make platforming a little easier. Made the north circool-aid a secret. Addressed the sector color bleeding in the eastern area. Might still need work? Added a ton of seaweed/coral and grass tuft decorations. Whole map is a tad brighter. Automap cleaned up. If this doesn't get in the first map slot then my crops will surely die. DUWNLODE: ba-sqCustardv5.wad EDIT: It wasn't custardy enough, so I changed the grass into cheese and water into buttermilk. Fixed some texture misalignments too. EDIT the 2nd: v3 has improved ammo balance, item placement and fixes a couple minor texturing errors. EDIT Part III: I reached out to the original voice of Square (I know them as me) and they agreed to record a custom voiceline just for my map! Whoaaaa!!! (If you ask, I'm sure they'll be happy to do the same for you) EDIT 4 Modern Warsquare: Fixed a missing texture, misalignments and changed some enemy placements, ammo balance, and a switch. Jimmy Posted April 14, 2021 Posted an update to my map above. I've been finding so many tiny fixes to make and have spent a crazy amount of time on those, way more than 10 hours. Hopefully the extent of the fixes is still in the spirit of these being speedmaps! I streamed all the maps so far last night! There's some fabulous stuff in this set. I offered a little bit of critical feedback for a few of the submissions and hopefully this is helpful to all the mappers. Apologies if the feedback seems a tad harsh or negative, I was a little tired while doing this, but overall I really thoroughly enjoyed myself. Jimmy Posted April 14, 2021 I realised while I was making my map that it might be a good idea for me, as one of the devs, to package up and release a bunch of the textures from the game that were pruned from the final release to keep filesize down. As a result of this pruning, there's a few annoying gaps present in the current texture roster of square1.pk3, so I've put together a PK3 that fills those in. Peccatum Mihzamiz Posted April 21, 2021 (edited) Map Name: Manifold Square Garden Author: Peccatum Mihzamiz Music: E2A6 (from Adventures of Square) Sky: PMSKY7, a custom sky I made combining two skies from Adventures of Square, plus some work of my own. Difficulty Settings: Yes. Also added a lot of co-op stuff as usual :). I didn't balance a lot for difficulties 2 and 5 because I am not used to working with them. Build Time: 10 Hours, plus an ungodly amount of bug fixing etc.. I didn't implement several things I wanted to do because I ran out of time. Known issues: There is a slime trail that shows up on the North Western stairs from time to time, the waterfall doesn't co-operate completely, and I haven't gotten spawning in ammo on map spots to work yet. Comments: Wow this was fun, and much more difficult than I thought! "But Pineapple?", you may ask me, "Weren't maps due the 28th?" YES!! They were! But I haven't finished mine. So uh... you know the drill... As far as excuses go, I turned 21 on the 27th, so I didn't have the motor functions to work on my map. I do have only 2 hours left on the clock, so I'm estimating that my submission will be live sometime in the next 12 hours. Until the clock strikes... er... 31? any of you's who still wanna have a map in this set are free to crank out a map as quickly as possible. The 10 hour limit is a maximum. I'll take your 1 hour maps if you give em to me. (and if they're beatable). YOU HEARD IT FOLKS. SUBMISSIONS WILL BE DUE BY 11:59 PM EST. I'm posting the wad a few hours early so that any minor bugs can be caught before I spend a few hours creating the release thread that'll take this post's place... in a few hours (maybe days, we'll see if I get busy). You'll need to load this pk3 with the square1 pk3 as well as the extended texture pack posted above.
