Lippeth Posted April 9, 2021 (edited) In late December of 2020, @Zylinderkatze got in contact with me to help get his composer more acquainted with some of the technical aspects of General MIDI for his Ultimate Doom episode, URE 2020. After talking for a while, we decided that it would be fun if I also composed a soundtrack for the episode, resulting in THREE full length soundtracks for URE, two with MIDI and one with real audio by @tam. So here's my take on the MIDI; it took three months to compose and fine-tune, and is now available for public use in other projects, and can be found on doommidis.com, but you can still get them now if you want to play them back with your favorite soundfont by downloading the latest release candidate of URE 2020. UPDATE: URE2020_Lippeth.zip Two recorded version are also on Bandcamp; one using Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth, and the other with a Roland Sound Canvas SC-55 mkii. And even though I've already recorded, processed and uploaded everything, I'm very much still open to criticism and will be happy to make adjustments at any time. In fact, there has been next to no outside perspective on it, so I welcome your input on making improvements! Edited September 23, 2021 by Lippeth 13 Quote Share this post Link to post
Final Verdict Posted April 9, 2021 I remember @Zylinderkatze working on his maps for this project last year, before I had to take time off for surgery. Originally an oil-rig map from 1995 he never finished but somehow still had it sitting around after 25 years. After a lot of cheering and enthusiasm he turned into a bunch of maps and then a full-on project. It was fun to watch him detail his process and idea's throughout. It was the first thing I looked for when I came back to DW about 2 weeks ago, but it had since snowballed into something much bigger and been given a name (took me awhile to find the new thread). Happy to see he got you as a composer for his Wad. I still can't play/test the damn thing but it's the first Wad on my list when I'm off these meds and able to get back to Doom in 2-3 weeks. I really hope he sticks around for more projects in the future. Unfortunately I can't pass judgement on the MIDI Lippeth. Well I can, but it will be heavily influenced by my state of my mind (i.e very strong painkillers) so it wouldn't be a balanced and objective rating. Though I'm sure you'd enjoy the 9/10 rating I'd slap on it by default heh. I have listened to it though so I might as well give it a shot, just keep in mind that this will include some drug induced bias. There's some nice variety throughout the tracks but I really like "Tomb Sweet Tomb" for E1M3 and "The Cut of Your Gib" for E1M4. Those two tracks are the best in the set in my opinion, but again I'm hardly sober over here so take that with a pinch of salt. Short and sweet I know, but it takes me forever to type in this state. And with that it's time to get back to my previous task: staring at drywall and being mildly fascinated by the drool coming from my mouth. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Lippeth Posted April 9, 2021 Ha, thank you for the feedback nonetheless @Final Verdict! It sounds like your recovery is going just groovy, I hope you have a pleasant stay on could 9 while you heal up. The progress for Zylinder's maps has been going great in my opinion, I've been helping (trying anyway) with testing while doing the music. The maps aren't your usual fare but they're right up my alley in style and I've had a blast discussing them along with the musical direction. Glad to know that some of the songs pass the drug test as well. A big reason for me sharing them in this manner is because this project turned into something very special and I wanted to see how I ranked on the delusional scale. I mean every song, map and mod I do is special to me, but something different sparked with this project. It's hard to describe but I hope it's enjoyable anyway. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Zylinderkatze Posted April 9, 2021 (edited) Awesome work, man. I can only repeat myself.. which doesn't make it any less real or valid :D You've done an amazing job, @Lippeth! It was really great to have you along for the ride. You made URE2020 that much more memorable, to me. Hopefully also to others ^^; Edited April 9, 2021 by Zylinderkatze 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

I know exactly what you mean, it's what got me interested in his project last year. I was keeping a close eye on the project before my hiatus and it was fun to watch it grow. He kept a detailed and entertaining log on almost everything he was doing in the maps. Anyway, enough gushing from me. I'm sure the others will be along soon to give you a better formed opinion, or at least a sober one. I wish you both the best of luck in your endeavours. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

TheGreenZap Posted June 27, 2021 This soundtrack sounds amazing! There isn’t a bad track on here. I would highly recommend this for anyone looking for a good midi soundtrack to listen to. I haven’t tried it paired with Zylinderkatze‘s wad, but I’m definitely planning on it. It’s great on it’s own, so I’m sure it will be even better playing Doom to it. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
