P41R47 Posted April 12, 2021 (edited) One of the really lovable things about our good old Doom is how largely moddable it is. And pretty much since it was conceived, people around the world started making maps for it. Some authors dig their way and designed amazingly narrative styled mapsets. And some other followed the marvelously fun abstract design of Doom 2 while map making. But between those incredible fun schools of design, there are some maps that are harder to grasp as they come out of nowhere, breaking boundaries, and taking the design a step further unknownly even for the authors themselves. Mapsets that are funny, mapsets that seems silly, but challenging as hell. Mapsets that without taking thing serious and having a goofy side, made their way into the community and are adored by most people around here. Yes, and this happens because those were designed mostly as joke somehow, maps to poke fun in some way, but they were soo good that they breaked away from the joke and delved into the serious challenge. So, as a satirist myself and as a person that always enjoy far more every experience if it has a good dose of laugh on it, i though why not make a list of all the Serious-Joke mapsets out there. -H2H-Xmas: Totally abstract galore and fun mapset that not only offers a great challenge, but the maps has some laughable content on them, too. Having Santa as our main protagonist to bring us our beloved christmas its something really fun for sure. Couple it with Doomxmas and you will have a greatly Xmas themed mapset that is really fun and has tons of charm. -The Sky May Be: The Blessed Engine was just a bless that transforms every Doom mapset into non stop laugh. But the authors take it further and made a few maps that make for a mind bending experience. -Dystopia 3: A serious endeavour that is itself a sociopolitical commentary. Some of the best looking maps of the first era of mapping here, with a great usage of the fake 3D floors. -Cyberdreams: Every Doom novice recurring nightmare! What could be more intimidating than 32 maps with almost no other monster than the Missile launching Cow? Well, THIS!!! The best 32 maps that make you think twice how to beat them as you don't have any weapon aside from the peashooter and just a few ammo to annihilate those menacing looking Moo-Moos. -Mars War: Nathan Lineback hated Microsoft's Internet Explorer, and he doesn't wanted to spread the WORD of how bad it was in just a simple medium as that. No!!! So he made a complete megawad!!! Satirycal, sociopolitical rant and also offering a good challenge. One of the best experiences out there, as it also teach that you can use every bad choice of design at Doom mapping, and still make something really fun to play. -NUTS serie: First one was made as a test on how to upload file to /idgames, the sequels are actually good challenging slaughter maps. Mostly played for the laugh, conquered only by those who persevered. -"Death in the ASS of the Universe"... In fact, this is a improvisated title: A 3 episode replacement for Ultimate Doom that plays really well. Eye del Cul was a spanish mapper that made excellent maps, but he didn't know it. So he deemed his work as jokes. The story shows us that it may possibly be the starter of a bigger trend out there. - Garrulismo (spanish slang that I can't translate to english): Eye del Cul's magnum opus. After the amazing ''Death In The ASS of the Universe'', a 3 episode replacement for Ultimate Doom, he returns with a completely 32 levels mapset for Doom 2. Leaning strangelly to the DTWID aesthetic, even before it existed. -Kama Sutra: Might be not the first serious joke mapset out there, but certainly its one of the most famous. Gusta and Method not only make some awesome and fun maps here, they made them totally challenging on the same vein of Hell Revealed, but even better, as they didn't hiddened the joking roots behind it. -Killing Adventure: Challenging and funny puzzle-ish maps, probably not good for those with not enough patience, but its laugh stock and two smoking missiles run on every map. -Mandill Ass Project: Who said that coding is only a serious thing? Nope! The ASS project shows how scripting and coding make for some serious-joke 9 maps. -Khorus' Speedy Shit: Khorus offered us some great mapset for sure, but nothing beat his speedmapping diarrhea. No story at all (yet!) but something start to smell funny once you first step on this mapset. -Arch-Vile Jump: Doom 2 novices inner fear made real! IF you are one of those guys who laugh out loud while watching Jerry flame up Tom's ass and have fun seeing him fly high up, then this is your mapset. 32 maps of pure flaming jumps laughs! -Pirate Doom: a partial conversion that took us in a voyage to strange lands and serious laughs. 18 maps that take the juicy of those zdoom base ports features. Darch is a master prankster, too. -Going Down: Mouldy fragmentary obsesion developed into one of the most fun and entertaining mapsets out there. Funny, challenging, and seriously mind bending. The founder of the Chaotic Evil style of desing that still baffles almost everyone who give it a try. -50 Shades of Graytall: what started as a joke, becomes one of the most succefully surreal, fun and totally challenging mapsets out there. Three of the ugliest textures, a lot of F_SKY1 floor and just one floor patch on 18 maps to win a cacoward. -Ancient Aliens: After some serious follow-up of award winning mapset (Lunatic, Vanguar, Valiant), Skillsaw took a relaxing attitude, and made some of the most challenging maps that poke fun of some conspirancy theories! Take the shotgun, your spirit animal, and found the truth that isn't out there! -Killing Adventure 2: Ruba made a sequel! And its as good and funny as the first one! Time for another Adventure! -UnAligned: 21 Days, 27 Maps, Zero Texture Alignment: Ryath is a master prankster, we all know that, but this mapset started the insanity of the UnSerie. A 3 episode replacement for Ultimate Doom, mostly made out of pure puzzleish and funny maps. How could it be better? If It was Ultimate UnAligned. But, Do we really need more? -UnNecessary: 30 Days, 32 Maps, Zero Texture Alignment; or, UnAligned 2: A WAD No One Asked For: well, yes!!! More jokes, more puzzles, more Ryath for the love of the grinning god!!! -Preacher: After making Pirate Doom, another great serious-joke mapset, darch tried to take things seriously. So he took a religious course...but drop it and made these mapset instead. 10 Morbidly delicious religious flavored maps with some spooky laughs in the middle of all the chaos. -The Adventures of Square: awful geometric puns along some of the most atonishing maps ever. If thats not enough for you, maybe you are too sharp for this. -DBP13: Alien Bastards!: Oh No! Strange wacky sounding aliens are invading our space ships! An excellent episode long mapset that offers really good fun along an excellent challenge. -DBP16: Cyb's Freaky Colonoscopy: Cyberdemons suffer from some gruesome intestine problems, and this is the mapset that show us the whole interior of a Moo-moo's juicy ass! 12 Tricky and interconnected brown and smelly maps full of funny moments! -Noye: its totally a mystery that came out of nowhere! what made the authors of this mapset made this insanelly brutal maps that are also fun to play and have a extra point for laughing while making it? Don't know, but its a mapset made for advanced players. Made by slaughter gods to slaughter god, almost. -Dark Scythe: Erik Alm may be one of the most influential mappers out there. But he never achieved the most outstanding map he ever sought, and so, trying to make it, he cemented his mapping carrer, always trying to achieve the impossible. Erik Alm's obsesion was Simple in fact! Dead Simple! And he made 43 different maps trying to reach that sense of perfection. Unfortunatelly, he never reached it, as he never understood he needed another mapper to help him make a better square... -Gateway to Shangri-La: FIREBLU is deemed as one of the most ugly Doom textures ever. And this is a map that try to give it some love. Great map with surreal visuals. -Oops! All Tech-Base: YES!!! A whole megawad of techbase maps!!! and its not Back To Saturn X Ep.1!!! Tech base, as Esselfortium may thought when she made the awesome first Episode of BTSX, are never enough, and this complete mapset comes to justify that. -Boaty McBoat: inspired by this thread, some mappers started a community project with boats on them. 16 maps of Serious fun!!! -Ray Mohawk's Manic Monday: Doomkid likes to create some of the most wacky an interesting characters on Doom, and on top of all that, he is an excellent mapper that loves to create seriously challenging and fun maps at the sound of really good and catchy pop tunes. -UnMaking: Ryath make it again! And this time it on serious 64 MBits of grittyness puzzles and jokes!!! The first serious joke mapset for Doom 64, courtesy of our good master prankster! But don't take it lightly, this is headaching for sure! -Doom 2 In Spain Only: Ey, Amigos! We are here to kill some demonios and make them cagarse en los pantalones! Tios es hora the una good españolada!!! Just out of nowhere, the last impresive effort in the DTWID serie of marvelous megawads. And this one, its the best recent serious-joke mapset we have in a good while. -HFFM: Gachimuchi scene is almost unknown on this side of the planet, but that doesn't stopped the fans of Billy 'Aniki' Herrington (a gay porn actor that is beloved on Japan) to make a really challenging and awesome mapsets in his loving memory. Maybe not for all out there, and surelly NSFW material, but aside the controversial aesthetic of this mapset. The maps are seriously Hard Fast Fun Maps. There are several versions of this mapset, so anyone can play it as they like. -Adolf In Hell: We all know the story of how a tiny man tried to conquer the whole world and exterminate those he thought were not apt to live on ''his'' world. Well, everything went wrong for this man, and now he is trying to escape from hell... or conquer it in the process.
