RAY MOHAWK 2 - Development Thread

Recommended Posts

This look really fun, but sadly I don't think the quality of my maps is high enough.

I'll just sit back and watch the professionals do the work... ;)

The BFG9000 has been upgraded to the BFG9002 (Nine-thousand and two).

I lost it here. Well done, this looks promising.

I wanna suggest looking at Kick Attack perhaps for enemy sprite replacements, the surfer mutants would probably fit well in the aesthetics. Better perhaps than the marine-helmeted strife guys?

Also the title screen is hilarious, I love it!

I would like to claim a map slot. This looks like it'll be really fun to work on!

A pleasure to have you on board Voltcom. Let me know which slot you want whenever you’re ready and I’ll fill you in.

Excellent suggestion, thanks Gez!

The Mohawk is back with a vengeance! Really excited to see what's in store for this installment (I still need to play the first one now that I think about it)!

Love to see more stuff from ya. If I'm being honest, I feel like the plaster sprite fits better as a plasma replacement than a chaingun replacement, since it's basically an E-11 from Star Wars. Alternatively, maybe the chaingun replacement could be like the M60 from VietDoom or the M41A pulse rifle from Aliens, that would be pretty cool!

This looks great! I'd like to put something together. I'm thinking start on a cruise ship, followed by a giant battle on the seashore. It could be Map 12. Hopefully I'll be able to do it within vanilla limits. Is the visplane explorer tool in UDB accurate?

I just tested the demo in DosBox, looks amazing, very similar to Manic Monday and it plays very well, the pistol may be a little op (at least IMO), but everything else is terrific

Good luck, I'll be glad to play it once it's finished.

The Flamethrower and BFG9002 sprites also come from BLUDBATH.wad.

Those were both originally made by The Innocent Crew for Obituary.

I just checked out the weapons real quick and... holy shit DK, this has to be the most overpowered arsenal I've ever seen (though that's probably due to the fact I don't play many GZDoom mods, I'm sure there's even crazier stuff over on that side of the community). As a fellow dehacker (albeit an inexperienced one), I look forward to dissecting RM2's deh file. Sure to be some interesting tricks in there!

Also, Ray is now my favourite FPS protagonist, a novel combination of hyper-macho '90s action hero and laid back surfer dude. I love him!

I think I'd like to try my hand at this. I've never done a slaughter-lite map before, nor a beachside town. This should be interesting! I'll take slot 13 maybe, somewhere unimportant so as not to obstruct the more experienced mappers. The main thing that worries me is the sprite limit...

Fantastic stuff as always Doomkid! I could try to drop in a quick map into any late-game slot (the flamethrower and the blaster are especially alluring...)

Oh boy, this looks pretty interesting! I've really enjoyed first Ray Mohwak, if there's not a strict deadline i'd like to give this set a try with a small / medium map!

Hey @Doomkid! Awesome project here, I have two questions:

If I make some MIDIs appropriate for this project, can I post them here for others to use?

Also, is there an overall deadline for the project?

Thanks! Good luck to you and all the wonderful mappers, and remember: don't eat the yellow snow!

Hm.... I'm tempted to do MAP07 and make a dead simple clone with like a 80s Miami coastal hotel look.

Fuck it, I'll bite. Put me on for map07.

Count me in.   Was thinking of doing a terraced estate like in the movie Scarface, so I started mapping it and put the movie on.   And I'll see how the one in the movie looks when it gets to it.

For music was thinking midi of Dead Kennedys - Police Truck which has a little of a sarcastic party sound to it, or maybe another similar but less dark song, or maybe The Kinks - Apeman since they're like proto-punk.   Want to bring a little punk to go with the mohawk but still fit the theme.

I was going to plug some of my MIDIs because some of them are upbeat and cheerful, but listening to the original Mohawk's music most of them don't seem to be the style you are going for. I'll do it anyway.

https://opengameart.org/content/airport-attack - probably the best one for this

If you end up using these, feel free to send me PMs if they need to be edited. Maybe if someone asks I'll do an original track too.

Cool, you’re in! AFAIK, UDB’s visplane explorer tool is completely accurate.

I’m glad you like Ray, that means a lot to me! I’ll put you down for slot 13, and don’t worry too much about sprite limit - this wad will be technically vanilla in that the whole campaign can be played without crashes in vanilla, but stuff like the sprite limit is just so pointlessly limiting that I don’t want it to be a major hamper on the mappers.

It’d be a pleasure to have you on board, Aurelius. I’ll put you down for slot 16

Why only 20 maps?

Basically, full 32 map campaigns are a bit too much to juggle, plus I want this wad to be something that a truly elite player has the ability to blast through in about ~2 hours  (assuming they’re killing most monsters). 20 just feels “right” for me personally.

I love Apeman, I think that’d make a brilliant choice lol. I’ll put you in slot 11 if that’s cool?

Thank you northivanastan, I welcome you to plug your MIDIs! Always good to have more community-provided musical choices.
