Some candidates based on accomplishments since Dec 10: 

 

Looper: Doom 2 UV-Speed in 17:29

 

People are kind of used to it since it's been improving for years, but the UV-Speed of Doom 2 at record pace (or near that) has a ridiculous combination of skill, difficulty, competition, and routing research, involving lots of really precise tricks, with small margins for time loss. Whoever does it is basically an automatic candidate. 

 

Nevanos: Sunlust UV-Max in 4:00:49

 

He did this recently, and it has just gotten onto YT. The low odds of getting through all the hairy spots over 32 maps, combined with the length, makes this one really hard, even if you might watch Nevanos or MrZzul play maps like Sunlust m29 individually and make them look "only" moderately difficult. There are so many places things can go wrong. 

 

Then following those two, there have been some other sick runs by people like Ancalagon and Lucky_Edie (Bastion of Chaos UV-Maxes), mhrz (a fast max of a very difficult map, Toilet of the Gods map01), Arbys550 (old Sunder D2ALL UV-Max, or close enough). Then there are some really good new UV-Speeders, but I don't follow every demo and dunno if they've done anything in this group yet. (This paragraph is not exhaustive.) 
 

And playthrough-pace UV-Maxes of very hard maps like No Chance and the last in Stardate 20x6 is obviously cool, so Decino's would be in the next group after those, which also includes many of the best speedruns of the year, which is strong.   

 

I wouldn't want this to be in the awards though, maybe just a thread someone does on a forum (if that). Because one of the cool things about the Doom community is that player skill is not valorized to the extent that it is in, say, competitive MP games.

I'd love to see this, like a well researched annual/monthly thread about these sorts of recent achievements within the community. It'd probably help get more people into speedrunning or just pushing their skill ceilings, as well as just giving more recognition to those that have already been at it for a long time.

There should not be a best player award. It’s easy to debate that and there is no point. There are high level players such as killer5, Daerik, and Ancalagon however we don’t need to try to find the best among them. It would be a waste of both your time and their time to try to find out who’s the best of them all.
