vdm1337 Posted April 26, 2021 Just curious. I really like the start maps on TNT and Plutonia, but Entryway and Hangar are pretty good, too. For clarification, you can count E2/E3/E4 as different start/end maps. Also including SIGIL, No Rest For The Living, Final Doom, Doom 64, Heretic and Hexen. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
continuum.mid Posted April 26, 2021 (edited) In no particular order: 1. TNT Evilution - MAP01 System Control 2. Plutonia - MAP30 The Gateway of Hell 3. Freedoom Phase 1 - E1M1 Outer Prison (if Heretic counts, this counts) 4. SIGIL - E5M1 Baphomet's Demesne and E5M8 Halls of Perdition 5. Doom: The Shores of Hell - E2M1 Deimos Anomaly 6. Ultimate Doom: Thy Flesh Consumed - E4M1 Hell Beneath and E4M8 Unto the Cruel 7. Heretic - E1M1 The Docks (I'd list others if I had actually played the rest of the game) This is a very restrictive question, so these are all the ones that I like. The rest either don't really distinguish themselves to me, are not good, or I haven't played them. Edited April 26, 2021 by northivanastan 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
xX_Lol6_Xx Posted April 26, 2021 Probably: 1. Heretic E1M1: It has an awesome design and good music 2.- FreeDoom Phase 1: C3M1, let's be real, it has a terrific midi 3.- Si6il E5M1: Baphomet's Demense, anything Romero does is pure gold. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
LadyMistDragon Posted April 27, 2021 You forgot Strife and Hacx....Anyway. Doom - Favorite opening map is Hell Beneath. It's so ironic that I was bitching about ammo scarcity in another thread, and I find this to be my favorite. At least part of it is because of the music "Sign of Evil" fits this map as well as a re-used track possibly could. My favorite closing map on the other hand is Phobos Anomaly. The way the boss fight is telegraphed, the first howl of the Barons"Sign of Evil" and that crazy shit that happens when you teleport....I just assume Doomguy survived by blowing up some barrel or something, but that can be incredibly, incredibly, intense. Heretic - E2M1 is probably my favorite opening map because it best establishes the tone of the game IMO. Much as I might like E1M1 and the energetic music, I'll give my pick to another one. My favorite closing map is Portals of Chaos. The central arena is just cooler than the other boss arenas. Doom II/Final Doom/Plutonia/Doom64 - Map 01 from TNT is easily my favorite, probably because of the awesome metal music that starts you on your way. Map 30 from TNT is also my favorite, probably because the other two are just butt-ugly. Strife. I have to say, the old Order/Front base is my favorite location to go back to. My favorite ending area would probably be where you talk to that consciousness where you can get the bad ending. It's a very evocative sort of underground-base feel. I haven't played Hacx yet, and Hexen's a little on the boring side so I unfortnately have nothing to say about either of those. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
BaileyTW Posted April 28, 2021 Going off of Doom (including Sigil which I just played yesterday and beat today so that's gonna skew things), Doom 2, and Final Doom. For beginning levels, it's gonna b a tie between TNT's map 1, and E4M1. Still wondering if I only like E4M1 out of spite, but hey I do like it, and TNT's map 1 gives you a berserk and a level made of things you can fell in 1 or 2 punches along with fast paces song. E2M1 is a close 3rd and it is mostly because of the music and the plasma secret. For end levels, it's a bit of a close one. End levels tend to be kind of lackluster, this goes mostly for ones with the Icon of Sin, cause I don't usually feel like replaying em all that much. This isn't the case for Ultimate Doom's though. Having a hard time picking a favorite among them. Right now I want to say Sigil's Halls of Perdition and that's probably cause I just beat it this morning a few times. Barring that though it is a tie between E1M8 and E2M8. Both of em introduce great monsters, both are memorable cool fights. I think E1M8 has a better aesthetic going on and I like the music, Sign of Evil, for it more, but E2M8 has the first Cyberdemon fight. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

rzh Posted April 28, 2021 Hexen's Winnowing Hall is my favourite. It quickly introduces you to all of the new features in Hexen, it has a great atmosphere and background track. Heretic's Docks is also pretty good, but it's track is my personal D_RUNNIN. E4M1 is one of my favourite iD levels. Plutonia's MAP01 is also a classic. My favourite final levels are Heretic's E1M8 and E3M8. Heretic had the best bosses out of all the games by far. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Perfectly sets up the bleak and desolate feel of Hexen and that you're going on a long, dark journey. Plus you get to punch a giant bell. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
