TheNoob_Gamer Posted May 8, 2021 Yeah, doing anything excessively can cause massive burnouts (I went into slumber for like 4 months). You can do other things - reading, playing other games to fill in your Dooming time if you feel like resting for a bit. But remember, Doom is eternal. 6 Quote Share this post Link to post
Eric Claus Posted May 8, 2021 Sometimes I have, I usually have plenty of other games to play to fill the spot. Honestly even just playing Heretic a bit helped as it was similar but different enough to make things a bit fresh. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
VoanHead Posted May 8, 2021 I like to play other games as well if Doom got me exhausted to even play it anymore. Try out Shovel Knight, anything good from the NES library, Quake, some good DOS platformers, SNES library of games. Currently, I’m also going through GTA San Andreas alongside my dooming. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

omx32x Posted May 8, 2021 sometimes i get a bit bored but it takes me like 2 days to get back into doom 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
DNSKILL5 Posted May 8, 2021 (edited) I wouldn’t call it getting tired of Doom specifically. Sometimes I need to get away from modding games and sit back and just play more. Sometimes, I need to get away from gaming entirely, and when that happens I’m usually not playing anything or being active in any communities during those times, and usually not working on any related projects either. It isn’t really anything to do with the games themselves or the communities around them as much as it’s to do with me and what’s going on with me personally in the moment I guess. Usually, once I start to think about it on my own is when I’ll come back to it. That’s when I know I’m ready to come back for more. Edited May 8, 2021 by Gerolf 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
Arrowhead Posted May 8, 2021 I won't usually get tired of Doom per se, I will more usually get tired with one aspect of Doom - for example, I may get tired of playing Doom, but I won't be tired of mapping for Doom, or say, watching some dude do speedruns of Doom... 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
dei_eldren Posted May 8, 2021 Not yet! Probably a time will come when i'll play less of it (if my life situation changes, for example i find someone to actually date (on the other hand, i'm pretty sure i wouldn't date someone who doesn't at least to some extent like Doom) - but there's no indication of that at the moment), but with WADs in their thousands available for variety, i don't see myself ever getting bored of Doom. And i'm still trying to get good, too... 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Final Verdict Posted May 8, 2021 Sometimes but that's natural and actually a good thing. Nothing worse than burnout. I usually just take a break for awhile, plenty of other games to play. Generally speaking it depends on what I'm doing with Doom at that time. Sometimes I prefer vanilla and Wads that stick closely to the original formula. Other times I might play a Wad that has custom weapons/monsters to spice things up. There's no rhyme or reason to it and I'm just as likely to play one or the other. I do tend to lean a little more towards stuff that stays true to Doom but that's about it. I always come back to Doom though, some years more than others depending on free time. I have been doing that for longer than I care to admit. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
SilverMiner Posted May 8, 2021 Tired? No Burnt out? Yes I can't come up with a good map almost a year 6 Quote Share this post Link to post
Mr. Freeze Posted May 8, 2021 I haven't played Classic Doom in years. I burnt out on WADs from DW when I realized my favorite WADs weren't going to be surpassed. It happens! 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Teo Slayer Posted May 8, 2021 When I first started playing Doom, I loved it so much that I couldn't stop playing it. After I completed Doom, I wanted more, so I downloaded Doom 2 and Final Doom. Finally, I wanted even more and so, I went to Doomworld looking for PWADS. I never get tired of Doom But I also take breaks from it 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
pcorf Posted May 8, 2021 I love it but I don't dedicate all my time to it. 8 Quote Share this post Link to post
Boomdav Posted May 8, 2021 Same thing happened to me as well.Felt like a i wasnt enjoying doom like as usual and then decided to took a 2 month break. It worked wonders [ last week started dooming again] 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Naarok0fkor Posted May 8, 2021 There's something seasonal about Doom... 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Liberation Posted May 8, 2021 Burnout does occur in the various aspects of dooming. Mapping burnout being common especially after a project release or even after resource building for a project (looks at you vanilla). Playing doom to a degree as well, I've tested more maps so far this year rather than just sitting down with a new release and playing it for myself. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Biodegradable Posted May 8, 2021 I'm probably overdue for some burnout since I'm just two weeks shy of having played absolutely nothing but Doom for an entire year, save for the time I spent playing Prodeus when it came out, but honestly I'm still obsessed and love murdering Satan's children and testing works for mappers. 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
SLOTH MARINE (CB) Posted May 8, 2021 Yep sometimes I get tired of doom, but not often 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Optimus Posted May 8, 2021 I recently stopped playing for 1-2 months as I was really motivated for other hobbies. Now the strange thing is, when I came back I realized I was getting motion sick. I had this happen another time back, taking a long break from games and especially FPS, coming back and something different in my brain and I get motion sick, annoys me for a while because I can't enjoy, then if I stop and play again the next days my brain gets used to it and I don't get it anymore. I am in these big periods where I haven't played for more than a month (but now I recorded a play of the new DBP) and that's actually cool as my motivation shifts in creative hobbies and other stuff (after I finished the OptiDoom version, I also started building old DOS PCs from 8088 to 486 and running demoscene demos, trying to code things in C+asm, experimenting, etc). 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
BaileyTW Posted May 8, 2021 When I'm playing excessively I'll take a few days break, like after I grinded out a full game speedrun of doom 2 or after I beat the last act of Scythe. I tend to burn out on games easier, and while Doom has caught my attention more and burns me out less, burn out still looms even for things I find fun. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Zirtonic Posted May 8, 2021 Not yet! I play other games on top of DooM (lots of co-op stuff with friends) but DooM is my comfort food and something I can turn on almost literally at any time. I fell in love with 2016 and played a lot of that when it came out and dabbled with the classics here and there...and then Eternal came out and I fell in love with the series all over again. Over the past year+ I've played almost exclusively Eternal and DooM II WADs and haven't felt an inkling of boredom or burnout. I'd love to keep it that way but if it's ever time for a break then I'll take one. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gunstar Green Posted May 8, 2021 I don't play Doom constantly but there's never been a point in my life where I couldn't just hop into Doom and have a good time. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Kokoro Hane Posted May 9, 2021 It is one of my favorite video games but I have days where I am not in the mood to play it and others where I want to stick different mods on the same map to see how it changes the experience. No matter how much you love a game, you can get tired of it. But one thing awesome about favorite things are you'll never get sick of them... you'll just take a break from them. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Rytrik Posted May 9, 2021 (edited) On 5/7/2021 at 9:33 PM, a.a.i. said: I rediscovered Doom in December and had been playing non stop since then, up to 10-12 hours on some days. I haven't played the game in a month, except while recording this month's ironman challenge. I had only just discovered the world of custom wads. I really wanna play them, but I also don't feel like touching the game for now Sometimes it's also fun to create. Perhaps you're 'full' of Doom 'consumption', and might want to try your hand at creating. It's a good balance. Or perhaps a break is simply wise :) Some humble advice: Make sure you're taking care of the rest of yourself (physical health, other aspects of mental health, different inputs, etc) if you're playing that many hours of video games. Again, just my humble advice. Edited May 9, 2021 by Rytrik 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Steveb1000 Posted May 9, 2021 I find it quite intense to play, so only play for 20-30 minutes at a time normally. Sometimes just 10 minutes. That also helps keep it fresh. Stops me overdosing. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Dubbag Posted May 9, 2021 I'm taking a break right now actually. I got burned out a little with my show and all. Too much of anything is never good. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
floatRand Posted May 9, 2021 Yes. Sometimes longer hiatuses, sometimes shorter. I'll just do other things, like play other games, work on my other creative efforts, things like that. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
