Anyone else think the Doom Eternal fanbase can be really rabid at times?

Recommended Posts

I'm a frequent browser of the Doom Eternal Steam forums and whenever somebody expresses any kind of criticism about Doom Eternal for whatever reason, and I'm talking about genuine criticism, not even somebody who's trolling, the thread immediately gets bombarded with replies that are either dismissing the poster as just a troll, berating the poster, or simply telling them to just "git gud".

It's kind of annoying in my opinion, no one can even get an opposing opinion out because they will immediately be flamed by people who regard Doom Eternal as some kind of a perfect game for some reason.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Doom Eternal, I think it's a really good game, but the fanbase at times definitely makes me want to hate it.

What are your guys' thoughts?

Edit:

Immediately after posting this, I saw a thread which shows another good example of what this thread is about:

This thread is basically talking about some Doom Eternal fans who will literally go out of their way to make full on video essays trying to debunk "bad" Doom Eternal reviews.

also after 2016 and later when eternal was released the fanbase came to dog shit in my opinion. They are non stop spamming "RIP & TEAR, WHEN DOOMSLAYER ENTERS THEN DEMONS ARE SCARED, DEVIL MAY CRY, DMC + ETERNAL = DEVIL WILL CRY" i hate the new fanbase because of its toxicity and like you said, they will always get on you when you say something about eternal. I hate them

Yes. That's how fanbases work. Doesn't matter if we're talking video game, TV serial, sport team, music band, cars, or anything else. If it can possibly have a fanbase (and pretty much anything can), it's going to have really annoying obsessive fans.

Well there's your problem right there. This place is cool, the subreddit loves their memes which others find annoying but I don't mind, and the Doom Eternal fanbase on YouTube seems pretty good, at least judging by the creators I'm subscribed to.

Steam forums being a cesspit is hardly unique to Eternal.

But with Doom Eternal it's way more prevalent than any other game I've seen, it's almost constant

Give it some time for the circlejerk to die off. Doom 2016 had the same effect for the first couple years, now look at how people react to it in 2021. It had its share of idiotic video essays at the time too, mostly from COD gamers who never played a Doom game or anything else like it before. It also had its share of haters, too, like the DWTerminator review that spent 35 minutes trashing the game for not literally being Doom II with HD graphics. The only reason it seems more prevalent with Eternal is because Eternal had, what, double the sales of Doom 2016?

i will say thats because you are more into doom then other games for example my experience with the quake community has basically been old dudes saying how new people cant enjoy quake because reasons saying how quake is an underdog (it isnt) and saying how doom is so much worse (they are so similar i dont see how you can like one and not the other) but thats just my experience

doom eternal community is not only younger but its also way bigger then any other id shooter i would say its even bigger then the classic doom community (at least for now) so i can totally see how it can develop a toxic mindset kinda similar to what happened with the brazilian doom community some time ago too much younger people joining making it extremely toxic

i dont get people who wants the old doom formula back like doom isnt tomb raider or some other series from the 90's that aged poorly doom still plays and looks good to this day if i want to play old doom i will play...old...doom things change and i think we should be happy that it did not become a duke nukem forever seeing how hellish the development was

While I haven't been paying any attention to whatever is going on in the nuDoom side of the community, I can assure you based on my own observations regarding discourse in the online gaming sphere for well over a decade, this bullshit is very typical with new/popular games. This isn't a new phenomenon by any stretch of the imagination and will dissipate over time or at the very least wither considerably. It's only REALLY LOUD and in your ear right now because of your proximity to it.

I second this. Honestly, try to find a game released in the last maybe decade and a half that's not got a section of rabid and/or stupid fans. It's a mission. You tend not to encounter it with older games, as the fans that stick with games for a long time tend to either be pretty grounded already or they get so with age as they stick with the game, while the hyperactive, ADD ridden asshats lose interest and go annoy some other game's sane fans.

I already said it's a mix of modern nerd/geek culture with brand loyality and people compensating for originally wanting these games to flop, alongside why people get sick of the game journos jokes etc.

But i feel like it could also be tied with Doom's fanbase and a certain specially/importance that even some older fans forget.

Like, for better or worse, fans sort of redefine Doom, whether it's calling a nameless dude "Doomguy" or how source ports and mods felt like they were an unofficial extension to the series.

Even something like certain memes around Doomguy and fan culture can be seen as what planted the seeds for the creation of the Doomslayer. (you know what i mean at this point)

May or may not be something comparable to how fans of something like Touhou impacted their series.

But if there ever was some hierarchy system to the Doom fanbase, you'd obviously see modders, source ports devs, wiki, documentation, some site hosters, etc would have a higher place than the sort of people that make clickbait videos or steal memes on Reddit.

There is something that could be studied here, as if fans "owned" the series and tried to know more about it, but i can also see it in resulting on some ego problems.

Still makes me wonder if anyone has plans to make sure some things are carried by later generations.

So Doom is truly "Eternal".

Any game that requires a certain amount of skill to learn has a rabid fanbase that uses "git gud" as a criticism stopper. Their logic is anyone that doesn't like the game is just not good enough to play it. I think it's just a bunch of tryhard teens with way too much time on their hands. I have seen a bunch of doom eternal steam forum posters with over 1000 hrs played in the game. That's absolutely insane, they are basically playing the game for 5+ hours per day. I don't have a problem with people playing a game for a lot of hours, but I do have a problem with them making fun of others and typing "git gud" all the time thinking it makes them superior.

What you're talking about is nothing compared to the toxicity found on Gears of War and Hitman forums. There they don't bother debunking reviews, they go straight to the throats of anyone whom makes negative comments about their beloved games. Even if you just casually mention you like Gears of War 4 and Gears 5, and don't like the overly dark default processing used on the original game, they'll write an entirely unsolicited essay on how the original fanbase of the franchise generally hate the new games, and harp about how the dark processing is intended to make it look more gritty. There is nothing worse than the fanboyism that happens on official forums of games. They're like a bunch of spoiled brats that can't stand hearing contrasting opinions.

Doomworld’s small size is what saves it from being like the other sites. Thank your lucky stars for that.

it’s not a Doom phenomenon, it’s a scale problem. Once you have a large enough mass of people, a group of them will gravitate towards and idea and protect that idea at all costs because they tie their identity to it....and then that idea begins to infect all around it.

Just like everything else in life. Religion, sports clubs, computer hardware, politics. It’s humans being humans.

As a console Slayer myself, although I accept the PC players being way better at the game, it hurts to see people basing on console players for literally not being able to do the fun stuff like Weapon Quickswitch and Mod Swap all too well. The ones who spam "get good" are blinded by the heavy elitism. I agree. Doom Eternal on PC is the way, but bashing us console players for having limitations is just unkind at times. Why not all of us join hands and just have fun slaying demons? In the end, that's what Doom is all about.

If a community or institution grows large enough, it eventually attracts sycophants, fanatics, and gatekeepers. I would like to think they're the minority in most cases including Doom fandom.

While I can appreciate that nuDoom fans and old-school Doom fans are a bit of different fanbases, it's not really fair to single them out to be rabid when we have literal wars over source ports happening on a weekly basis. Both have their share of toxic fans, just like any game. And it's pretty gatekeepy to think otherwise. That said, I'm closing down this thread, singling out nuDoomers as the "rabid" ones is pretty gatekeepy behavior.

addendum: I misread this OP originally, reading it as pitting classic Doom against nuDoom. However, singling out any one fandom for its toxic fans, rather than just singling out the toxic fans, especially on a site that is open to ALL lovers of Doom, and with so much overlap between new and old Doom lovers, is a thread made in bad faith. This thread is remaining locked but just thought I would clarify the point.
