How would you want a future Quake title to look and play?

Recommended Posts

So after Doom Eternal, it's safe to say that id should probably let that franchise take a solid vacation after going out on a high note (especially after the Slayer's ultimate fate). And with id's next project already being teased, some have speculated that it could either just be another Doom title or possibly even a new Quake title.
Either way, all that's known about id's next project is that while Doom Eternal "controlled like a sports car", this upcoming title is supposed to "control like a monster truck" according to Hugo Martin.

So I'd like to talk about what one exactly wants out of a new Quake game especially if id's next game turns out to be a new Quake title.

With that out of the way, all I can really see are two major options: a continuation of where Quake 4 left off (especially since that title is in itself a sequel to Quake 2, plus it ended on a cliffhanger), or revisiting the Lovecraftian settings of the first Quake. Or possibly do something entirely new (I mean, it's the Quake franchise; it's one of those where you can absolutely go buckwild with the premise as long as it's about guns and monsters).
Plus, Quake Champions is already a thing but... well, that's a whole another can of worms entirely.

But the more important question here is: how exactly should it play?

I mean, like with Wolfenstein or Doom or any other revived franchises like Shadow Warrior, there's some kind of niche to fill in regards to how you play. Namely that it can't just be "rocket jumping with glory kills" and that's it.

So with that said, how would an optimal Quake play and look like?

Not to dismiss your question or anything but hearing these quotes and knowing Hugo's interests, I wouldn't be surprised if the next ID Software game was an original IP that involved giant mechs. I for one would definitely love to see a new mech game with the visceral feedback and satisfying combat that ID is always known for.

As for the Quake thing, I dunno...Quake Champions' engine and assets but with actual PvE?

id love an new ip from them bu quake is starting to become obscure and i really dont want that to happen

i want a revive focused on sp with lovecraft elements (even more that they said the maykrs becomre giant love craftian monsters after the hell corruption) and i want it to play more close to the classic id software shooters that is isntead of haviing mechanics for you to go faster you just run fast as fuck and the gameplay is less focused on arenas and more focused on close encounters with tough monsters in small numbers like the original quake

Actually, now that you mention it, a mecha game made by id wouldn't exactly be out of their wheelhouse.
Not only is Hugo famous for his work on Pacific Rim, Emerson Tung's bread and butter is essentially concept art for giant mechs (he's one of the big-name concept artists at id).

I'd def prefer a reboot of Quake 1, as the military/strogg themes are just not my thing, even though i do like Quake 2 and even 4 a little bit. If ID did a less power fantasy, more space horror oriented game with it, it'd be just perfect imo.

I really love the aesthetics of the og Quake game and, even though a lot of circumstances during development led to the original levels being not that good, the community content for it nowadays is seriously amazing.

I'd want a first person survival horror game set in Quake 1's universe. Though, this is probably not a popular opinion among Quake fans, I just think it'd be cool to focus on the horror elements. Anyway, I agree that ID should try something new before going back to their older titles.

Quake 1 style, but movement speed closer to Classic Doom because that will just be funner, and with more bosses.   But have a use key instead of auto-pressing switches and less brown.

As much as I want to see a new Quake entry, I don't know how id could make it work. The new Doom games already incorporate a lot of stuff from Quake (jump pads, quad damage, arenas, castles, even strogg-like enemies on D2016), so I think it would be a bit hard to differentiate the two IPs now.

If we go with this idea of giant mechs being a possible thing to focus on for them, we could see the "Sentinel Clone Wars" as Hugo called it. A self-contained Doom adventure with the NuDoom style, but perhaps seen through the eyes of a Sentinel Atlan pilot? That could be cool. Maybe we'll even get cinematics of the Slayer dropping into the battle and then the demons are on the run after a very hard-fought and seemingly hopeless battle from the player's perspective. Would be cool to see the Slayer as a force of nature rather than the player's vehicle.

A friend of mine recently tweaked an RE8 screenshot and added the QC nailgun - the result looks remarkably close to Q1's style and atmosphere, closer than much of QC imho.

Honestly I would ideally like to see a new IP from id Software since it has been over a decade at this point.

But if not that, then I would like them to make a Quake game that is more similar to Quake 1 (or more specifically something like Arcane Dimensions) in style. Bring the back the Lovecraftian setting and make the visuals and the monsters more gritty (to differentiate from Doom Eternal's aesthetic design). But also don't forget to bring back the railgun.

If a new Quake comes out I want it to be about the Strogg, I like the Strogg, I think they're neat.

I feel like it should play more like a hybrid of 2 and 4, the horrors in Quake 4 are brilliant and would be better in a slower game but Quake 2's action is very satisfying, maybe if it was slightly slower than 2 but with 2's combat and an emphasis on environmental detail like 4 I think I'd like it.

So, basically the first Prey.

I would like to see a proper Quake 1 sequel because I don't like Quake 2 or 4 in terms of gameplay

Honestly, for me, I feel like Arcane Dimensions with Quakespasm Spiked is pretty close to a perfect Quake sequel.  About the only thing I'd like to see is HRTF implemented in QSS for that full-on headphone experience.  Oh, and for the Simple Quake Launcher to be officially added too.

I quite liked the industrial/cyborg stuff from 2 and 4, wouldn't mind seeing more of that without all the sentinel/demon/maykr jumble, maybe with hub-like levels similar to 2 and less brown, just add a map so players don't get stuck running around like headless chickens.

Just let it be dead.

Before Eternal I wouldn't of agreed but now... I don't want to see platformer Quake with glory kills and lore overkill and monsters that couldn't infight their way out of wet paper bag.

A proper Quake 1 or 2 sequel would be nice. I have doubt they wouldn't make it all weird and you'd have to wrestle ogres to get your ammo rather than just picking it up somewhere.

Doom Eternal already exists. Why would Id make the exact same game but just cross out Doom and replace it with the word Quake? They didn't give us just more of the same when they made Doom Eternal.

I don't think they'll make the exact same game and I was being a bit sarcastic. I could be wrong but I can't help but be doubtful of the idea. I played Eternal for 8 hours and it's the first Doom game that I completely stopped playing after such a short time. Eternal didn't do it for me and I don't see id Software making a Quake or a Quake 2 sequel that doesn't go in some weird direction. Probably just me being old and cranky. I'll stick with the classics I guess.

A sleek new Quake 1 remake would be cool as long as it's faithful. I still like my idea of MachineGames making that while idSoft works on a new IP.

I'd like Quake to diverge into two product lines, one following classic Quake 1 stuff, one also following the much large Human vs Strogg storyline, especially since Quake 4 ended on a 'more to come' note. Show us how Kane adapts to life as a stroggified marine, as he also continues his battles, show us the Quake 2 marines, etc.

Quake 1 Sequel of course.

Put alot of gameplay on the movement systems and no upgrades or anything of that sort.

In Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal, the Doom Slayer is basically a modern soldier X 100.

All they would have to do would be to make, say, a Viking x 100. Melee combat with ranged weapons also. Different focus. Make melee much more important. And make it feel like quake plz.

Quake 2 – and after it Quake 3 Arena – controlled like a 12-wheeler. I wouldn't call a 12-wheeler a monster truck, nor would I call a game that controls like a 12-wheeler a good thing.

Unreal (and UT) on the other hand had some nice controls that could easily twitch and react with swiftness. Yes, you're not going at 20 mph like in oldschool id shooters, but I don't mind.

still, ut > q3, there's no questioning

So, you know what? id could do what Epic barely couldn't manage to do in UT4, and put out a better, faster, yet ultimately more straightforward Quake, and given that the last Doom games were singleplayer campaign focused (as have been most recent FPS-es), that will probably mean an arena shooter to triumph over all others; one that, like those from the era the Quake franchise is rooted in, boils down to sheer skill, tactical wit, and agility. Like UT, but it's Quake!

Hopefully that also means one that will have an interesting array of carnageous gameplay options and 'mutators', like UT does. Don't do it the boring Q3 way!

I want a return to the dark Lovecraftian world of the original Quake.

What he said, also it shouldn't play like the new Doom games, and it shouldn't cross over with them or Wolfenstein in any way at all, because MCU style crossovers are unbelievably lame and uncool, and they need to stop.

I'd want a sequel to the original Quake. I don't just mean have it be dark, full of Lovecraftian horrors and gothic architecture. I'd want it to maintain that breakneck Q1/QW style movement with a heavy, heavy focus on multiplayer. If it had a sick singleplayer campaign that was balanced with a new, core Quake multiplayer component then it'd be perfect.
