Killerratte Posted May 12, 2021 (edited) Baloney.wad is a single map with classic Doom gameplay. It requires a ZDoom-based port like Zandronum or GZDoom to run. All difficulty settings are included. Designed for no crouching and no jumping, Freelook not required. Cooperative play is possible, but not tested. Uses additional textures from "2mbrown.wad" and features an original MIDI file created by JD Herrera. (YouTube) Gameplay time: 12 - 15 minutes Further info This map is based on a crude MS Paint drawing by an unknown Encyclopedia Dramatica forum user, who gave it to me many years ago, so I could create the wad "Akoopasoup" with it. In the end I never used this drawing for its purpose, I had plans to make it a secret fourth map, but dropped that also. About one year after the release of Akoopasoup, I've built the entire MS Paint map from scratch. At first it was supposed to be a joke map that was going to intentionally look like absolute garbage, but then I posted a screenshot on 4chan /vr/ Doom General and people kept telling me to continue mapping. That's what I did. Build time: 2 months The first half of the map (until the blue door) is entirely made out of default Doom 2 textures. After going through the blue door, you will notice a higher variety of "new" textures. Special thanks to JD Herrera for creating a brand-new MIDI file, titled "Doomguy's Training Montage". Biodegradable Posted May 13, 2021 (edited) Another solid map, Killer. I really do enjoy your work. The way you combine your combat and progression by having the map unfold more nooks and crannies and traps as you play so there's never a dull moment is an excellent touch that keeps the player on their toes. Good stuff :^) Edited May 13, 2021 by Biodegradable 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
Sectorslayer Posted May 13, 2021 (edited) Bump indeed! Full of traps and nice detailing. Good work! I loved the look. And the combat - most of the time. It's usually hard to assess a room if hundred enemies just teleport in after you pick up some goodies. But the die-and-retry pattern got me through this. I especially liked the AV+Rev encounter in the tunnel. Raising the barrels to block them and buy some time is a really neat touch. Awesome map! Killerratte Posted May 15, 2021 (edited) Nice job Clippy, too bad you missed out on the berserk and the super shotgun that was highlighted by a brightly-lit corridor (after it is available), made the map way harder than it should be. Clippy Posted May 15, 2021 @Killerratte damn, the berserk is like my favorite thing ever. Makes sense I found a way to make it more difficult than needed to be like always haha Still had fun 😊 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Pseudonaut Posted May 15, 2021 Here's my saveless playthrough. It's non-blind, I played with saves first without recording. Couldn't be bothered to find the secrets, and left a couple monsters alive as well because I think at least one of them is probably in a secret. Pretty good map. The start killed me a few times at first, when I didn't know where everything was and ran out of ammo. Actually, it killed me even after I was familiar just because of the reckless strats I decided to use. Ultimately, though, I think it's a pretty easy map when you know what's coming and have a good route. There are a few parts that can be dangerous otherwise; the encounter at 7:15 can go wrong very quickly if you screw it up, which I did, but I survived anyway. The best way to deal with it is to immediately rocket the chaingunner, killing him and the nearby shotgunners so you can grab the rockets and quickly turn your attention to the monsters approaching from downstairs. Success or failure in the 8:39 encounter is mainly determined by how many rockets you've saved up; I died here in one of my attempts because I went into it with 15 rockets and couldn't get it under control. That's why I sniped some enemies with the chaingun earlier in the map when I would've liked to use rockets. After that, it feels like I had basically won. The final series of fights introduces some custom monsters but I never died there. Maybe those caco variants could cause a sudden death with their rapid stream of projectiles. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Killerratte Posted May 15, 2021 (edited) My original plan was to actually build a mountain of waste, feces & dirt at the end, which the player has to climb, but I thought it would just drag the map out unnecessarily and make it look ugly. Kuro_mahoh Posted May 15, 2021 (edited) I made funi video on ur wad No seriously, chief: That was a pretty solid wad (9/10) So I grant you a video of my dying a kajillion times to your wad because I suck at doom. (Sorry if I sounded so awkward during this video, I'm not totally used to showing my voice so I may sound a bit odd) Edited May 15, 2021 by Kuro_mahoh That reason 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Killerratte Posted May 16, 2021 (edited) If you run away from the monsters in the stairs encounter, they will teleport after you and wait for you behind the explosive barrels tunnel. All planned out in detail ... except for that one stupid monster that's always missing on everyone's kill counter. I did do tests and achieved 100% kills, but I think it has to do with a monster being "stuck" in a teleporter room / it's the one Lost Soul in the starting area that didn't get a line of sight on you / or it's that Revenant that's waiting in the wall (sometimes even I forgot to pick those rockets up). That is evil and I love it. Keep up the great work dude! And I have my best strategy... Running. Oh yes, running. The master strat! 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
JD Herrera Posted May 16, 2021 I've just played through Killerratte's map! I had to, I've barely seen some WIP screens so I wanted to see how it plays with my midi in. Here's the video if you want to check it out. Recommended wad, fairly tough and tricky. https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1025067303 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
kushpuppi Posted May 17, 2021 Beat it on Hurt Me Plenty, had a lot of fun! Mean traps and cool visuals, music was good as well. Only found two of the secrets. Seriously tho that trap towards the end with barrels that pop up out of the ground? That ain't mean, that's sadistic. Good stuff. :3 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
