One.wad , a 1997 map by Danny E.K. van der Kolk

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!

Sometime ago browsing the internet, I found a doom wad.

The map isn’t rare, lost or anything and I downloaded it from a site completely unrelated to the Doom world , but I’d like to share it with you not only because that website it is not easy to find, but also because I like that map and I think it is good.

One.wad is a 1997 single level map by Danny E.K van Der Kolk originally released for Doom II 1.666 and replace MAP01.

Sections with long corridors, a wide open area an an HUGE underground level are the main features of this wad. And what I like the most is that the almost all of the map, suddenly, can…change, depending the on the path you take.

There are no official secrets according to the text file , but during my gameplay I found a “hidden” exit (that was actually not really hard to find)

I tried the wad on Dosbox and Gzdoom and it seems to run perfectly.

Now some screenshot

So, if yo have some free time or you’d like to take a break you can have a try

EDIT 07/7/2021: Updated download link :)

The official site you linked doesn't seem to have anything Doom-related. It seems interesting, so can you provide another download link?

Nothing should be lost, brother. Nothing.

Alexandria remembers.

The gameplay is a bit boring maybe: long, empty corridors and open areas with few enemies. The design instead, in my opinion of course, isn't so bad: :)

Me think WAD preservation, like media preservation (movies, music, games, etc.) in general, is actually pretty important stuff, at least for historical purposes. Aspiring mapmakers may learn a thing or two from even the worst WADs.

This poster deserves recognition for being a great source for lost WADS and arts.

I don't know. Such huge caverns and high structures were uncommon, no?

At least its made for Doom 2 1.666. It could be fun to figure out which notable stuff relies upon that version. I know of a few, like Ottawau.

You two are no fun lmao. Nah, I feel you. Doom history preservation and all that. Map still stinks though ;^)

I don't know about you, but those screenshots interest me. I love huge hallways like that, it gives me kind of that Super Mario 64 vibe where you are all alone in some structure and your only friends are your enemies.

Perhaps more early WADS toyed with that idea.

Funny, I wrote a review of this for the upcoming newstuff chronicles. My opinion was basically exactly what you'd expect, along with a little aside about dad rock.

Hi there, thanks for posting my long forgotten map :) I know it's not everybody's cup of tea (well, apparently hardly anyone's), but I just wanted to make something different than the existing maps (back in '97). Hope you enjoyed it anyway!
Kind regards, Danny E.K. van der Kolk.

Wow, I love to see original mappers comment on their wads. Welcome to Doomworld! Have you made any other wads?

It was a nice finding and, personally, I enjoyed it. Welcome!

@Yodek Rethan I suppose there's not much point in giving a thorough critical breakdown of a map you made a quarter of a century ago in a different era, so I'll say sincerely that I do admire the attempts to do something different and play with moving floors and cavernous spaces, both of which I am a sucker for usually.  Mostly just glad that you popped in here to say hi to everyone :p

Sorry, no (sigh of relief from community lol). Back then I focused mainly on application/game development, and made this wad just for fun.

Thanks! I google my name sometimes, just to see if there's something new regarding one of my 'creations'. To my surprise I stumbled upon the link pointing to this post. Who would have guessed, 24 years later...
