battlescroll Posted May 13, 2021 why do we truly love doom so much. Is it because of the story, mods, gameplay, or even the community. why do we love this franchise. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
omx32x Posted May 13, 2021 i think everyonehas a different awnser to that question but for me its the same reason why i love minecraft, megaman and old pokemon games so much its a game first and a piece of art second, many games since the ps1 generation try way too hard to be art sometimes at the cost of gameplay thing about all of the extremely linear games or stuff like uncharted, gow, the last of us or some modern pokemon games (these are all games i like btw) they all try to deliver a story first and be a fun game second i dont have a problem with this aproach but this makes the games way less fun to replay and at least for me keeps then from being timeless like doom or minecraft is well at least thats my opinion on it 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
xX_Lol6_Xx Posted May 13, 2021 (edited) Cuz I grew with a doom port (SNES Doom to be specific) and I loved it. The game is good and the flexibility of the engine (Not GZDoom, I talk about vanilla/chocolate doom) is enough to create fantastic mods to enhance the experience, making the game even better. Spoiler No, I wasn't born in 1990, but I played the SNES port in my childhood Edited May 13, 2021 by Lol 6 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

SilentD00mer Posted May 13, 2021 My first experience with Doom was the Snes port and I loved it. Maybe because the game was mysterious and because of the part of exploration of the maps. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
out_of_service Posted May 13, 2021 It has been said that DOOM is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than ripping and tearing demons apart with chainsaws and shotguns. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
BaileyTW Posted May 13, 2021 (edited) The gameplay of doom is just really nice. Moving around with speed you do just feels good and being good at it feels better. Like, even my first experiences with doom, which was snes doom, felt nice even with the added clunkiness to it. Edited May 13, 2021 by BaileyTW 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Hitboi Posted May 13, 2021 Because it's fun to play. The satisfactory of slaying demons and moving fast is the key. There are also other reasons that people like Doom; graphics, story, music etc. etc.... 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
HyperCynic Posted May 13, 2021 The physics just feel *perfect* in my opinion. No game feels as satisfying to simply load up in about two seconds and start slaying things. The ease of modding and the sheer amount of incredible free mods... so you literally have endless content thanks to this awesome community. On top of that, the engine is so easy to work with, for someone nuts like me who likes to get things working ASAP in at least some playable form, it's so quick to toss some ideas together and go. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

Artman2004 Posted May 13, 2021 Doom is a very accessible game, and can be played and enjoyed by anyone of any skill level. You can just boot up Doom and have a blast, and the modding scene practically extends the replayability to unprecedented heights. In any other FPS game (or even the more recent Doom entrees), most casual players would probably get torn to shreds in the first 5 seconds due to getting stopped by the high skill floor. In Doom, you can just kick back and shoot some demons in the face without having to sweat, where as in other FPSs you have to be on your feet constantly checking corners and being paranoid. While I understand why people would like games like that, sometimes you just have to take a break from constantly dashing around and switching weapons, and go for something less involving. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Side-O-Fries Posted May 13, 2021 It's the doom community! Thanks to you all, I get to keep playing all this new amazing content that keeps coming out year after year. Honestly, I'd rather play Sunlust, Eviternity, Sunder, Ancient Aliens, etc. over any new first-person shooter. And the most amazing thing is that there is absolutely no sign of things slowing down. I've been playing doom since the mid-90's and I plan on playing until the day I die. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
continuum.mid Posted May 13, 2021 (edited) Some big reasons for me include: I love games that have simple, elegant mechanics, like arcade games. Doom is the elegantly simple singleplayer FPS I've played. It's free and open-source, and thanks to fabian every time I want Doom on a new (Linux) computer I can just do "sudo apt install crispy-doom freedoom" Killing mass numbers of low-tier enemies is extremely satisfying. Large enemies, also satisfying. Sooooo much community content - even just limiting myself to limit-removing WADs that are actually good, I will never be done with all of them. The community provides me an opportunity to make music in a format (MIDI) that requires little effort relative to other styles, and still be appreciated for it. maxmanium Posted May 13, 2021 I think I really like the modularity of the game -- how easy it is to mod (relatively). Granted, by the time I started playing there was already a wealth of information in the form of the wiki, so take it with a grain of salt. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Arrowhead Posted May 13, 2021 @maxmanium I agree, I think that's a huge part of why people flock to classic Doom. I don't know why I love Doom so much. Probably has something to do w/ my dad playing Doom/Doom 2 so much while I was very young. According to my mother, if I was having trouble sleeping, she used to bring me down to my dad's office, and have me watch Doom w/ him. I would usually calm down right after and fall asleep. I don't remember any of this, but apparently it was a semi-daily thing for the first 4 years of my life. I wouldn't doubt if part of my love for Doom is simply imprinted on me - like any other behaviour. Anyone else feel similarly? 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
DNSKILL5 Posted May 14, 2021 For me it’s because it was one of the first games I remember playing and it was one of the three games that made me want to create games of my own, the others being DN3D and Wolfenstein 3D. Also, I think a lot of people take the games for granted now because it’s been around for a while, but when they were new games and at the age I was at the time, they felt very real at the time. There were many years where I didn’t have the ability to play these games anymore as I was growing up, and when I finally got to play them again years later, I realized that my memories of the game compared to what I saw then and now were slightly different. Not drastically, but like I said, the games felt much more real to me when I had first played them and they were still relatively new games that I had little to compare them to. So I think a lot of that is overall the reasons I have stuck with these games for so long and have never tired of them. I do love the WADs people have released all these years, but I have never gotten tired of the original games to the point that I don’t play them anymore. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

roadworx Posted May 14, 2021 the base gameplay of the game is really, really goddamn good. the bestiary is one of the best, all the weapons are incredibly satisfying pistol doesn't count, the movement is a m a z i n g, etc all of this not only makes for a fantastic game, but combine that with an engine that's ridiculously easy to mod and you have a pretty clear idea as to why we love it 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
NeilForshaw Posted May 14, 2021 I'm fascinated by how people getting into Doom decades after it came out. It almost feels like there's more people on here that are younger than Doom than older. It shows that it's not just rose tinted spectacles as the reason for doom's popularity. I played it to death back in the day. Made a few maps ect but then moved onto quake and on to whatever... I never ever though doom would Good solid gameplay that can lead to so much variation. Modding from the very start. I think with the modding it's easy to get to. Even trying to make Quake or Unreal levels back in the day was a pain. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
MFG38 Posted May 14, 2021 Fun core gameplay loop, varied beastiary, easy modifiability - and most importantly, one of the best and most insanely creative communities I've ever had the pleasure of being a part of. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
