who else here uses oblige when they run out of good wads to find and play?

Recommended Posts

just got oblige earlier today because I was running out of good wads to play brutal doom with and I was wondering. how many other people here use oblige for the same thing?. also after seeing some good oblige maps I have decided to take some inspiration from oblige in my next doom maps since tbh oblige maps are better than my current map making skill rn

no it kinda sucks, and discourages actual mapping

oblige can create good maps

but they will never be the same a a man made map.

manmade maps have thought put into them, ideas and care

well its not like im gonna make an entire megawad with oblige to upload it to id games. I use oblige to entertain myself and play its wacky maps but I make maps for other peoples entertainment and for them to play it and enjoy it

I find wads that I want to play much more often than I actually finish playing wads, and that's without really looking. I can't imagine what must be going on for someone to run out of wads.

i probaly should be talking about this in the controversial opinions but i never liked how big doom and wolfenstein are 32 levels is way too much and i usually get bored with a wad around map 15 or after the secret levels

4 gigs? shit man that's almost what I'm reaching to at this point. Maybe try out reading the wadazine or asking around for really good wads to play?

It's less of a problem if you pistol start every level that you play. No need to keep track of saves for multiple different continuous megawad playthroughs that way; I can just play a specific level, then switch to another wad if I feel like it, returning to continue the other wad later.

i do like to play it saveless so if i pass the level i keep my weapons and if i die i have to pistol start i found that i pay way more attention to the game to not die and i end up spending more time playing too

Running out of good stuff to play is quite an amazing feat considering the sheer amount of wads that exist. I'm sure if you go out hunting for mini-episodes and single maps, maybe visit creator's pages to check their stuff out, look for community chests, speed mapping collabs, etc. There'll still be a lot of good stuff to be had. I'll still recommend you play stuff vanilla though.

Also worth considering the other doom engine games, Quake 1 and 2, build engine games, and the community content for those like Q1's Arcane Dimensions and Blood's Death Wish

OBLIGE is an interesting little thing, but I couldn't really imagine using it and playing it's levels consistently.

Like, it's fun to pop in and play a level every now and then, but why would I constantly play mediocre boring maps, when I can play something much better?

Oblige is better than most wads out there.

- OP, 2021

Nah, seriously...we have a crapton of wads out there and Oblige should be used as a last resort if you run out of wads to play (which is impossible)

I'm in the minority again because I'm a bit of an Oblige addict. I think it's excellent and I play an Oblige episode about once or twice a month. While I agree with everyone that man made wads are better crafted, Oblige has a true randomness and spontaneity that most man made wads don't have. I really enjoy the mechanical unpredictability and randomness of Oblige. I also enjoy how much you can tweak each episode. Oblige is also handy if you want to try out a new mod or hud, etc.

Sometimes you get lucky and get a really good and interesting map... but sometimes the opposite. Every now and then Oblige will generate a really impressive and inspiring map.

However another problem is that it's not so good at making single levels. It's much better for episodes or complete 32 map wads. Whenever i make a huge single map, the monster balance is terrible and you sometimes get a wave of one monster type only. eg the map has 50 former humans and then 60 demons and 50 cacodemons only. Something like that.

Oblige 7.70 with it's many options and the addon ObAddOn generates maps which are better than quite a few maps presented here in the forum.  The generated maps can rival those produced by seasoned mappers.

Other than that it is fun to watch the animation as the map is generated. :-)

I would be interested in seeing a few examples of this.

What? Run out of good wads? I have a ton of fun reviewing new wads. I bet there are at least a dozen new wads uploaded here every day. Obviously not all top notch, but there are always a few you can have fun with. And I learned to not just play the maps but learn from them, observe the enemy placements, the geometry ideas, the visuals... There are always something you can learn from and I have fun doing so, even if the map does not play the best, you can still learn from it what NOT to do.

BUT if you have fun playing oblige levels... it's your decision, if it works for you, I'm the happier.

I mean if you just go to the idgames archive and hit the random button you're bound to find something you like. I did my wad review series 700+ wads deep this way.

I tried Oblige once ages ago but never really got into it. It's strange because I do have a thing for procedurally generated maps in games but with Doom it's different. Handcrafted maps just carry more weight for me, the creativity, care and passion that goes into them can never be topped by some algorithm/code.

But each to their own. I'm set in my ways and that's just my view on Doom maps. Maybe I should give Oblige another shot as I know it has come along way since I tried it. I doubt it will replace my love for hand crafted Doom maps but that doesn't mean I should rule it out. Variety is the spice of life and all that.

I'm more surprised that you've run out of Wads to play. There are thousands of them out there. Do a little investigating, I'm positive you'll find some really good Wads that you haven't played yet. There is a lot of hidden gems out there waiting to be dug up.

I went through a phase a couple of years ago - possibly more - of generating the biggest mapsets Oblige would do, of the different themes offered. I was interested in the fact that something as potentially complex as making a map could be automated. I read up on it somewhat too - it's fascinating stuff.

However -  yes - once you have played one Oblige map, they are very same-ey (understandably so). IIRC, I did have a decent tinker about with the various options, and you can generate different variations on each theme, both gameplay and, somewhat, design. For me, the biggest issue though was the same-ness of the sections of the generated maps - obviously as a result of the randomised but modular generation logic.

So to answer the OP, no, I don't use Oblige maps as a substitute for person-made ones. There is a metric shit ton of the custom maps, as others have said...
