who else here uses oblige when they run out of good wads to find and play?

Recommended Posts

Oblige is a fun novelty to use occasionally but that's about it.

Though I think I should mention that an updated version of Oblige with more features called Obsidian is in development. Has more features and makes much more intricate maps.

...Then you can complain about there not being enough good Doom wads, lol.

I'm out of steam for now. There's a lot more where that came from.. but I honestly don't see how anyone could play through all of these in less than a year, and this is just stuff that I know first-hand to be good.. There's a LOT of wads missing from this list that are 9999 million times better than anything generated by Oblige

HOLY SHIT. thanks a lot i will get to trying all of these out right away

Other than that it is fun to watch the animation as the map is generated. :-)

Are you serious of that?

I tried the Obaddon thing, generated a megawad out of it with the highest setting for detail and....got bored at the end of the first episode (around map 7) because it felt "samey" each time I see the maps.

It actually generates the same base areas over and over but it adds some detail here and there and a good eye catches that immediately.

Sorry but I prefer the human touch.

Oblige maps are pretty good the first time you play them, but they get samey very fast. Play a few maps and you played them all. Also they look too busy for my taste. If you like playing them, go for it, but trust me, you'll inevitably get bored of them.

And I don't buy the whole "if we start playing computer generated maps that will discourage people from making new maps and/or playing human made maps" argument, that's just silly. It doesn't really matter how good computer generated stuff gets, people like making stuff and they like stuff that's made by people.

I have a spreadsheet of maps/wads I plan to play on my YouTube channel with links to each one if you're interested...it's quite a lot.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1nOW8OkjsTskX5OIc1ZPTCThWtNZq7s5Y1sAfTt6DWnI/edit?usp=sharing

EDIT: Also, for reference, red text indicates things I have already played in the past that I plan to play again.

EDIT 2: I reordered the structure of this sheet, now all my WADs I've played before and plan to replay are in the leftmost column and there is no more color coding.  Also, when I complete something and upload it I remove it from the list.

What?

Dude, there's megawads from the late 90s that are better in quality then some OBLIGE wads I've played.

What are you talking about?

I may use Oblige if I want to mess around with a lot of gameplay mods and I don't want to either; play a mapset for the first time with a bunch of unintended features, or replay a mapset I have completed over again.

most megawads from the 90s are better, because at the very least they had actual thought put into them to make them fun and unique

I'll occasionally use oblige just to see what wacky things it can generate. If you mess around w/ those settings a bit, some crazy things can happen! Can be a fun little distraction...

The idea of running out of good wads to play is incomprehensible to me. Not just because I was very late to join the doom community and have a LOT of catching up to do, but also because great wads are still being released at a faster rate than what I'm able to keep up with.

Don't think so, while /idgames is only 44 GB, it contains vastly more files then they have.

(and here I was thinking the "Big vanilla wad pack" was getting too big, since it's approaching 1 GB...)

It's mostly from overly large PK3's off the zdoom forums and double-ups since I have everything categorised in separate folders. Plus I have a bunch of my own dumb unfinished maps and resources for making said maps in that folder.

To its defense, I would say that it is a very impressive random level generator. It has come a long way since the early Oblige days. It can actually produce some decent maps occasionally.

However, while it can make some aesthetically good looking maps, it simply can't rival human creativity in terms of layout and encounter design. Even 90s wads generally have far better encounter designs than modern Oblige/Obsidian maps. And given that there are thousands of wads out there that can last a lifetime to complete, one is better off playing those instead of playing Obsidian maps.

It is much more useful for Heretic though, as there is a good chance that, unlike Doom, one can run out of Heretic wads to play.

IMO the biggest issue with Oblige/Obsidian is that I'm pretty sure that it basically makes levels by just throwing together and connecting a bunch of pre-made rooms and decorations with no real thought and some limitations (That can be turned off in ObAddon and Obsidian), to not make maps that are too random.

But the only way to fix that AFAIK, so it would create maps with any thought put into them, would be to completely redo how the level generation works, and I really doubt that will be happening any time soon since it would take a ton of time and offort to do.

Feature wise though, ObAddon/Obsidianare definitely way ahead of Oblige 7.70 though, hopefully GZDoom maps will eventually be able to be generated with polyobjects and vertex slopes eventually, along with maps having scripted sequences through pre-made ACS scripts and the like.

I would be in a mixture of awe of and slight concern about anyone who has run out of maps to play in a game that's had a steady output of new material for the better part of three decades. Oblige is neat from a technical perspective, but that's about it.
