Albondigoide Posted May 22, 2021 (edited) Lots of similarities. Oppresive atmosphere (both done by shutting off lights, claustrophobic areas, etc.), both take place in space stations and planets, both have organic and gruesome looking enemies, multiple pathways in levels that require x item to progress (in Doom's case keys while in Metroid's case missiles, etc.), similar protagonists (barely speak, are all alone, are intimidating, similar armor design, etc.) and even the final boss in both games is a mechanical brain... oh and both games have good music too (many times both trying to be creepy). Coincidence? Edited May 22, 2021 by Albondigoide 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Chow Yun Thin Posted May 22, 2021 I believe Metroid was inspired by the first Alien film, while Doom was originally going to be a licensed Aliens videogame. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
omx32x Posted May 22, 2021 unlikely the troope of the space soldier was everywhere in the past with lots of games and movies having that trooper most likely both got inspired by the same thing with as the guy above me commented it was aliens 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
DavidN Posted May 22, 2021 Yep, both of them are definitely very Aliens-inspired! 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Mayomancer Posted May 22, 2021 I'd say both share the same inspirations, but have really different takes on it. It's funny how two games with such different gameplay and art direction can share so much common ground. Metroid definitely stays closer to the themes and atmosphere in Alien though, where Doom has other military base/gothic/hellish themes due to shift to a demonic invasion scenario and being more influenced by Aliens. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
