What do you think about the Pinkies?

I think they're great for all the reasons said here, but I think they're best used in swarms.  There's a reason MAP08 is the most memorable pinky encounter for most folks - suddenly the monster you're used to mindlessly deleting with the SSG becomes an actual threat.

I like them and they can be used to push the player in places you want them to go as a mapper. As a player, I agree with what has been said, in packs they can overwhelm you if you are not careful.

As far as looks go, I always think of the original pinkies as more cute than scary. (I think the ones in Doom64 are scarier looking, but my favorite would be the demons from Rowdy Rudy Powertrip which are more red than pink and look cool as hell.)

Pinkies are like bubble wrap. I love popping them with the Super Shotgun. With the Unity port i got into fast monsters and when it's enabled, a couple of pinkies can be nightmarish and i love it! Pinkies are kickass monsters and an important part of the enemy roster.

valiant fixed them really well by shortening the delay between them opening their mouth and biting. you get munched on in no time if you treat them like regular pinkies.

 

then there's also the leaping variant, like the quake fiend. saw those too in some wads (cheogsh iirc)

 

vanilla pinkies rarely do damage by biting, rather by getting in the way of rockets, absorbing shots, and boxing the player in.

I'm a fan of Pinkies. They're essentially moving walls that damage you. While they're not a threat on their own, one being in the right place at the right time can mess me up while strafing. Very well balanced and fun.

The most useless and harmless enemy in the game, that is pretty much never used well, because he can't be: Too slow and his attack takes ages to register. Could honestly do without them.

A common mistake amongst beginner mappers is that they'll fill rooms with them, thinking that it'll generate any challenge... no, they're just the definition of a moving wall, with even less potential for challenge than Barons.

They're a fairly good meaty enemy with a good bit of HP as well as a lot of speed so making them surround the player is rather easy. One problem though is people who think that pinkies on their own are a threat. Unless you're cornered, they're not. Adding a few ranged attackers like imps or former humans helps add some proper challenge and can sometimes make fights more interesting as 1 or 2 pinkies suddenly infight with the zombles. Personally, as long as they aren't spammed to hell and back pinkies are usually a fairly easy enemy to deal with.

Great enemy. Especially in groups with a lot of deadlier enemies, if you focus on the deadlier ones too much the pinkies devour you, if you focus on the deadlier ones you can get a mancubus fireball to the face. Very, very useful in a lot of scenarios.

They run, they growl and they bite. They are also good helpers if you can get them into infighting. When they attack an enemy such as a Hell Knight in packs it suffers a painful death.

Hmm....I never thought about their attack range being broken/insufficient in any way. If anything, it's their attack's delay that makes them essentially useless at infighting and way less effective against the player. By the time they reached their damage frames, their target has simply walked away from them, ignoring them as they snap uselessly at the air. That includes even slow-moving monsters like zombies, imps, Barons etc.

 

I knew that in v1.1 they had a different attack mechanism (essentially, a short-range projectile attack similar to the player's chainsaw), which occasionally caused them to start infighting with other monsters and even among themselves. If anything, that attack would be much less "wasted", as a pure melee attack won't fire at all if the target is not exactly within melee range.

I would love ultimate doom if it were just pinkies, they are my favorite enemy other than the Hell Baron

EVERY 1994 PWAD used to have what I like to call the "compulsory Pinky Chainsaw Massacre scene". If you saw a chainsaw (or berserk) pickup, chances were approximately 99.999% that it would be a trap which flooded the room/area with Pinkies, Spectres, or a mixture of both to keep things varied. Needless to say, you could almost always back into a corner and just lazily grind them down (quite literally) one after the other.

I love all enemies in the original Doom.

 

In Doom 2016, I found the Pinkies kind of annoying. Not that they were overpowered or cheap, I just didn't like having to readjust my strategy to deal with them.

I don’t use them very often, usually throw 1-2 in a small fight when the player has lower power weapons (shotgun + chaingun) to surprise the player and throw off their focus. In these fights, they can keep the player moving around a room (as opposed to standing still and dodging every few seconds) because the player will want to shoot the shotgunners and imps first instead of the pinky, but he can’t stand still or he’ll get bit.

 

I think spectres in bad lighting are more fun, either to create hard-to-see “moving walls” or seeing them come out of dark shadows into brighter rooms.

I don't know what to say about pinkies, but I love spectres in arena fights and claustrophobic layouts.

They have so much potential.

(Pinkies are kirby but evil, change my mind.)

Special mention to -fast Spectres in dark areas. The entire game immediately switches to horror of the highest caliber. And I love it. -fast Spectres in general are probably my favorite enemy.

Pinkies scared me ****less when I first encountered them in DooM I, especially in dark small spaces. Nowadays I dance with them to the Iron-Clad Knuckles tune.

You can use them in a wad to keep the player moving, just don't spawn a billion of them in a tiny room, in open areas, pinkies and imps are awesome imo.

Try to avoid placing enemies that aren't a threat in some way because that makes the gameplay really boring
