Tales from Doom

Any stories you have from your early experiences of Doom? If so, then feel free to tell so!

My first one : Back when Doom on Steam was DOSBOX only, I bought the classic collection and had the iwads.i beat Knee deep in the Dead then went to the Shores of Hell, I got my shit kicked my E2M4, I had to repeat it 6 times, if I remember. It took me an hour to finish, I had to look at a guide to figure out how to beat it! Overall great map nowadays to me, even on Ultraviolence where there's tone, and due to a lack of ammo, I have to not fight the demons. Nowadays Everytime I play E2M5, I get saved by the/a berserk pack. You can find the playthrough of Episode 2 UV on my channel.

My parent's computer had Windows 2000 after an upgrade and couldn't run Doom anymore and i was sad. I had no idea source ports even existed. Then, at school on a recess before math class on a friday a friend told me about some program called "jDoom" that would enable to newer Windows version to run Doom. It was something like 2001 and that's when i more or less joined the community. After that i found out about Doom Legacy and all the other source ports and since then Doom was again a huge part of my life that hasn't changed to this day. I know many people don't like the Doosmday engine but for me it was my gateway back to Doom and i'm very grateful even though i haven't used it for years.

I started playing DOOM all the way back in 2019. I remember that when I first started playing, I was awful at DOOM, and was genuinely scared of the levels. I thought that there was going to be a bunch of pop scares in the game and it would turn into a horror experience. I was lucky enough not to ever feel too scared, but man! I remember almost crying trying to take out the cyberdemon. Now I'm like "Really, only 1 cyberdemon?"

I shall remind this thread of the time I smashed my keyboard into two pieces in 2004 due to a pain elemental.

So basically back when I used to be complete and utter garbage at doom, I usually played on HMP, but then one day I got the dumb idea to try out UV on doom 2, it did not go well.

I raged, screamed, and rage quit once, eventually I made it to map 28, however, a pain elemental had other plans for me. I was rather low on health and hadn't saved at that point(dumb decision I know.)

The meatball "gifted" me some lost souls, eventually I had no health to spare, then a lost soul blocked my way of escape and the pain elemental melee'd me, killing me instantly.

I vividly remember tearing the keyboard out of it's socket and smashing it against the table repeatedly before knee dropping it.

Thankfully I have quelled my rage and am a rather calm person, I also started to get better at doom over the years.

Getting into doom it's self is the biggest tale i have for it.

My brother was a casual fan as well, but he decided to share the games with me so we could bond more.

I thank him for it cause the experience gave me one of my favorite games.
