Sotenga Posted May 25, 2021 Inspired by Sloth Marine's post about most and least favorite bands, I figure I'd ask what is your most and least favorite game, and if you can't pick just one, name an entire series instead, which I will be doing for now. My absolute favorite series is, if you can believe it, not Doom, but Castlevania. I grew up a big fan of Konami's action games and loved CV1 and CV3 for the NES, and while it was bizarre, I even found myself liking CV2 a lot as well. Throughout its many incarnations and its latter-nineties genre-shift from straight-up action game to an action-RPG, I've found most Castlevania games incredibly entertaining for their aesthetics, easy-to-grasp gameplay, memorable monster designs, and its normally high degree of challenge. My favorite of the series is still CV3, though Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night are close up there. As for my least favorite series... I really do not understand how Gears of War got as big as it did. The first game was considered the hot new thing in action gaming at the time, but I always found its mechanics clunky. Maybe I just sucked at it, but I'd find myself clowned on the floor despite trying to take cover when I felt was appropriate, and I felt like I wasn't so much progressing through the game as I was just surviving it. In addition, I found the aesthetics drab and the attempts at story and characterization to be stupid. Gears 2 was better, I'll grant, but I still wouldn't consider it a game I necessarily like and it felt like every game afterward was just trying to chase the bar that 2 set. Granted, I am somewhat biased against the seventh console generation, but I digress. Post what caters to your taste in games and whatever does the opposite of that. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
[McD] James Posted May 25, 2021 Favorite: Castlevania. Least favorite: Possibly FIFA taking into consideration its shameless, predatory monetization policies. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
out_of_service Posted May 25, 2021 My favorite series would be Sonic The Hedgehog, Mortal Kombat, Doom, Quake, Half-Life, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Dead Space. My least favorite would be Call of Duty and Borderlands. They're not bad or anything, just not my kettle of corn. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
continuum.mid Posted May 25, 2021 (edited) Favorites: WarioWare Mega Microgame$, The Elder Scrolls series, Doom series (duh), SuperTuxKart, Super Mario All Stars Least favorites: Can't think of a game I have actually played that I consider a least favorite. I will say that I find Final Fantasy IV in particular, and RPGs from that era in general, to be way too grindy. I am very conflicted about Heavy Rain. And I will never play any of the Tom Clancy games. Edited May 25, 2021 by northivanastan 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
roadworx Posted May 25, 2021 my favorite typically tends to be the classic doom series, but it depends on how intense my current hyperfixation is. it can shift towards the sims 2, civilization 4, etc. as for my least favorite...i'd have to go with league simply because of how toxic it made my friends in high-school 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
yakfak Posted May 25, 2021 faves: ultima, shin megami tensei, xcom, metroid, monkey island least faves: gta? not into stuff like postal or shadow warrior or any of the meathead army guy stuff either... a lot of tacky games in the high budget first person space 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Doom_Dude Posted May 25, 2021 Well my favorite game is Doom 2. Swordofdanu Posted May 25, 2021 Another Castlevania fan here, First game I played was Super Castlevania, which is a pretty easy entry to the series. my top three are SotN, followed by Aria, and Order. Least favourite is the yearly output of Call of duty shite, though I don't if that's fair because I haven't played any of them. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Arrowhead Posted May 25, 2021 (edited) Overall Favorite Series: Doom Other favorite Series: Fallout, TES, Sly Cooper, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, Quake, Wolfenstein, Half-Life, Mortal Kombat, Starcraft. I don't really have a least favorite series per se, but I do absolutely hate rhythm games - mainly because I cannot play them to save my life lol. PS. @Reelvonic LSD dream emulator is awesome. Haven't heard someone mention it in ages... Edited May 25, 2021 by Arrowhead 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

It seems like a weirdly specific dislike considering how most of the games play nothing alike and are in different genres. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
DRM-MAN Posted May 25, 2021 Might as well give a list since picking one would be redundant. Favorites: Half life, mother 3, doom 2, fallout 1&2, castlevania games, kof, yakuza 0. Least favorites: Shenmue, sonic heroes, sonic colors, mother 1, indie rpgs, doom 3, kof maximum impact 1&2, all three castlevania lords of shadow games, mgs5, saints row 4, metroid other m, yakuza 3&4, trials of mana, halo 2, sonic adventure 1&2. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

DNSKILL5 Posted May 26, 2021 My most favorite game of all time is Duke Nukem 3D. It just really stood out to me at the time and at the age I was when I played it, and is probably why I like a lot of similar games too, some that I did and did not play back then. I have a lot of favorite games and game series though, many of which are never going to have another game added to the series or haven’t had a new title in over a decade, such as 3DO’s Army Men series or Battletanx. As far as least favorite, I’ve never really cared for Pokémon. There’s also a game on PS2 called X-Squad that I absolutely can say without hesitation that I HATE that game, as well as the Casper game on PS1. Fuck that stupid game. That was and has been the ONLY game I ever physically destroyed. I guess I’ll further add that Rainbow Six was once one of my favorites but ever since Bubisoft got a hold of that series they have essentially removed every aspect that I loved. Sure, Siege can be fun online if that’s your thing, but it is so far removed from what R6 was meant to be all about. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

I guess I can kinda see, some of the newer titles end up being very unironically "America fuck yeah!", which while I don't take too great offense to, I can see as off-putting. It's kinda weird since while I don't read the novels (and they don't sound like they go this way admittingly), early Clancy games involved either A: America is the good guy but the fact it's backed up by other countries who are also good is very acknowledged (Such as Ghost Recon 1, where America is aided by British, Russian and German forces to name a few or Rainbow six, where while the organization is technically American, it's very multi-national and most of the members aren't American. (Not to mention a good few villains in the Clancy games are American, with a few games having the main villains be exclusively American, such as Rainbow Six 1 or Splinter Cell Conviction.) or B: Very much willing to take pot shots at America. (Which is actually part of the reason Splinter Cell Backlist got criticized a bit, considering how Classic Splinter Cell took potshot at America occasionally and even had Americans be the bad guy for 3 games in a row, yet then Blacklist has Guantanamo Bay as a mission, something which would very much have been critiqued a bit in past installments even if just a throw-away line, such as a rogue CIA Agent who you need to find out if he's defected to terrorists or just a deep cover agent in the second game getting a "Those things aren't mutually exclusive" remark from the Player Character, with no comment on it.) They definitely feel like they lost their self-awareness at least. (Since the games were generally made in French Studios, even Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter was kinda cheesy on purpose at least, maybe it's part of Ubisoft's "Trying not to offend anyone by being political" thing nowadays.) 15 minutes ago, Gerolf said: My most favorite game of all time is Duke Nukem 3D. Yeah, while I kinda of enjoy Siege as an MP title, I do very much miss the old single player games. (And as someone who didn't get to experience all of them, would very much like Ubisoft to hurry the hell up and release them all digitally already.) Remilia Scarlet Posted May 26, 2021 Most favorite: Touhou, definitely. Those Doom and Quake games that you occasionally hear about aren't too bad, either. Least favorite: Hmm... that's a tough one, because there's a lot of game series I don't enjoy or like but I still respect due to their influence. But let's go with Call of Duty and Final Fantasy. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Jacek Bourne Posted May 26, 2021 Most Favorite: Doom, Halo, Minecraft Most Hated: Yearly release games because very often they end up rushed and broken. They also represent how little many game studios care about releasing a finished product anymore. (I know this isn’t a game or game series however I really don’t play many games and don’t really hate any games that I’ve played apart from technical issues) 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Teo Slayer Posted May 26, 2021 (edited) Favourites: Doom (what did you expected?), Megaman, Pokemon, Sonic, Super Mario, Touhou, Minecraft, Wolfenstein, Metal Slug Least favourite: Final Fantasy games (I get bored quickly when I start playing a Final Fantasy game for some reason) Edited May 26, 2021 by Teo Slayer 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
ketmar Posted May 26, 2021 (edited) favorites: fun thing, but Doom is only 2nd. the first is Spelunky Classic. and on the third place is Arcanum and VtM:Bloodlines (the first half of it, at least), i guess. hated: dunno. i don't play the games i don't like long enough to start hating them. this prolly extends to "least favorite": basically everything i don't want to play, alot of them. ;-) Edited May 26, 2021 by ketmar 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Hawk of The Crystals Posted May 26, 2021 Favorites: Doom, yakuza 1 through 6, some of snk's fighting games, street fighter alpha 2&3, sf3 2nd impact, halo ce, left 4 dead 1&2, half life series, metal slug series, persona 4, halo 2, doom 2, plutonia, resident evil 3(PS1), fallout new vegas, dead rising 1, cod waw, avp 2, sword of the berserker guts' rage, saints row 1&2, sonic adventure 1&2, all three classic sonic games on the genesis, stardew valley, house of the dead 1 through 4, fist of the north star ken's rage. That's the capped amount, mainly cause putting all of my favorites would be a huge wall of text. Least favorites: Tnt evilution, all modern sonic games, kof 2001, dragon ball fighterz, yakuza 0, fallout 4, skyrim, knuckle's chaotix, resident evil 6. The least favorite also suffers from being a wall of text if I write them all down. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
BaileyTW Posted May 26, 2021 For favorite series, it's a three-way tie between Yakuza, Dark Souls, and The Elder Scrolls (since my favorite parts of doom aren't really the official stuff, doesn't go here). The Yakuza series has been recent for me, but 100% Yakuza Zero with a friend and we're going through the series now starting from 1 (Kiwami) and it's just a nice series, even if a hell of a lot of it is reading and watching cutscenes, it's good stuff. Dark Souls just has nice gameplay, even 2, and the aesthetic is neat, haven't played a Souls game in a while though since I haven't owned a console in years. The Elder Scrolls games are just neat games. Each has its problems but just big ole games I've sunk a lot of time into when I've had em. Honorable mention to the Ninja Gaiden series, both the old and new games. I've played 2 games, the nes one and Ninja Giaden Sigma 2, all just pretty good hard games and good I guess hack and slashes, lower on the list because it has been so long since I played any of em, which is a trend for all my favorite games, mostly enjoy em from afar these days cause all I got is this crappy laptop and a total of no money to enjoy games. For some individual games. Resident Evil 4 is a nice game, lot of why i like it is of course nostalgia but also it's a great game. Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead is a nice survival roguelike where you will need to balance your dietary habits or get vitamin b12 deficiency and have your healing stunted. Dwarf Fortress is a great game I cannot recommend to you. Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is a neat dungeon crawler roguelike game I keep forgetting how to play. Monster Hunter World is just great, beautiful game, awesome gameplay, the whole monster hunter series is great the only problem is I have never owned a monster hunter game and exclusively have played it at friends' houses (I actually own a crappy 3ds specifically to play the monster hunter game that is on 3ds, only problem is I don't own that game). Least favorites are hard. I'm easy to entertain and I'll simply stop playing a game I don't like so I just forget the bad games, and the bad games that I don't forget usually fall in the "so bad that it's good to not like em". That or games I dislike for ideological reasons I guess. Like yearly release games i guess, individually they might have nice gameplay, but as a whole and with sales practices they are rancid games. Also I guess games that just boil down to propaganda, which describes most war games, especially the longer they go. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
hybridial Posted May 26, 2021 Oh boy. I am full of opinions of game series' I don't like, does this shock anyone? But hey, the OP asked, the OP shall receive. But I'll start with things I like, not an exhaustive list. Favourite Games: Baldur's Gate 1+2, Icewind Dale, Fallout 1+2, Shadowrun Dragonfall + Hong Kong, Doom 1+2, Heretic+Hexen, Quake 1+2, Duke 3D, Blood, Shadow Warrior, Amid Evil, Dusk, Ion Fury, Prodeus, Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga 1+2 (hope they get remasters, would be nice), System Shock 2. I've still to play Planescape Torment properly but I'd imagine it'd qualify. Least Favourite. Bioshock Infinite - this game has no redeeming qualities, and has the stupidest story I've ever seen in fiction. Persona series - excluding 1 and 2, but 3 onwards, just anime crap, less interesting on every level than the mainline SMT games. Half Life series - Very dull Final Fantasy - I don't hate every one but, I'd say this series has never been as good as most make it out to be. Resident Evil 4-6 - I liked when they were survival horror games. All Roguelikes - Well, this is more of a game design concept that I hate than a series, but I just hate everything that does this. I guess that'll do. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

Archanhell Posted May 26, 2021 I do not have favorites, nor I have hated ones. For example, I lean more towards RPGs (JRPGs and MMORPGs), Indie Horror RPG Games (IHRPG) and Indie games overall (Ib, Omori though I just see gameplays, etc.), Roguelike games (Binding of Isaac), Gacha games (Arknights, Genshin Impact, etc), sandbox games (Minecraft) and many kind of games more. Ah, if it has awesome character designs and gothic lolitas (that one japanese fashion), count me in too. (Like Girls Frontline). 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

xX_Lol6_Xx Posted May 26, 2021 (edited) Favorite sagas: Final fight, Doom, The Heretic games (Heretic, Heretic II even though I haven't played it and Hexen) Half-life, Street fighter, Ninja Gaiden, Super Mario Bros (Of all games, I like Super Mario RPG the most), The House of The Dead, Minecraft (Yes, the story mode and Dungeons), Five Nights At Freddy's (From 1 to 4), Left 4 Dead (1), Soul Calibur (especially Soul Calibur 2 for the Xbox, because this man is featured, and because it has a killer soundtrack), Wolfenstein (Although I've only played SNES wolfenstein and the PC game) Least favorite: CoD (Mostly because nowadays every shooter has to be like it to be successful, thanks Doom 2016 and eternal for existing), the rest of the FNAF games... and, IDK, I don't play many games. Final Verdict Posted May 26, 2021 Let's see... Favourites: It's better to explain what my favourites genre's are, then mention which games I love in that genre. FPS: Doom 1 & 2, PSX Doom, Duke Nukem3D, Hexen, Heretic, Exhumed (Power Slave in the US), Return to Castle Wolfenstein and of course System Shock II. Probably a few others I'm forgetting at the moment as I've played so many over the years like Half-Life, Red Faction, Turok, Halo 1 & 2, Fear, Bioshock and so on. Strategy: Xcom: Enemy Unknown, Terror from the Deep and Apocalypse. Also enjoyed the new ones. Total War: Medieval, Shogun II and Warhammer, Heroes of Might and Magic 3, Command & Conquer/Red Alert series and Supreme Commander. I have a lot of favourites in this genre which branch into space 4x stuff like Sword of the Stars and Stellaris. Including some complicated oddballs like Distant Stars. RPG: The Wizardry 6, 7 and especially 8. Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, Icewind Dale 1 & 2, Neverwinter Nights and Fallout 1 & 2. The usual suspects, but also lesser known ones like Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magic Obscura. Except for Wizardry this is just the isometric rpg's, there is a shed load of others in FPS and 3rd person. Examples include Elder Scrolls: Marrowind and Fallout: New Vegas. I'm not going into every genre here but honourable mentions include Resident Evil 1 & 2, Parasite Eve, Dark Souls, Streets of Rage, Final Fight, Silent Hill, Vagrant Story, 7 Days to Die, Project Zomboid and many others both old and new. Least favourite: There's only one culprit here, Call of Duty games. I tried to get into them but it's just not my thing. Anything else I might not be crazy on but I don't run a mile from it. Call of Duty is the only one I can't stand, I'm not even interested in watching others play them. I never really worked out the real reason why I dislike it. I think it's because of the impact it had on FPS games which resulted in a ton of carbon copies with zero originality in them. In any case it's just not my thing. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
