I feel No End In Sight deserves a place in any top 20 list of megawads.

But that said, I chose eviternity from the list in question.

I have played everything on the list, except Sunlust and Ancient Aliens. If nothing else, this thread tells me that perhaps I should rectify this gap in my completed megawad list.

[Update: just downloaded Ancient Aliens and working through it now. Superb of course. Quality level: Skillsaw.]

Pcorf you can save this poll by changing one of those dtwids to AV :)

This is impossible. Obviously, all of these wads are very well regarded and rightfully so.

If I had to pick one, it was going to be MM out of sheer loyalty. Just proves how hard it is to top something that WOWs a person at a young age. Thankfully it’s multiple choice, so I also voted for Scythe 1 and Going Down. I’ll add my AV vote in too once it’s on the list!

You and I will get along just fine.

I immediately searched in vain for Alien Vendetta and found...nothing? What cruel and unusual torment is this?

Anyway, those are all fantastic top Wads but if I must pick from the list it would be Memento Mori 1 & 2. First Wads I ever played and I love them to this day. Honestly though, it's a tough list to pick from. Since it's multi-choice I'll toss a vote in for Going Down and Valiant.

We need AV on that list though.

I have not played through many megawads, as the fatigue is very real going through 32 maps, especially in modern times when everything is hard as balls and tuned for years, and my computers have had a habit of exploding on me mid-playthrough, so most of the things on that list I have only seen parts of.

Out of the ones listed, I have beaten both TWIDs and Icarus, and regular DTWID wins. D2TWID was alright, but certain problems I have with its presentation and content knock it to a lower peg.

I started playing https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/megawads/arcade a while ago. It's so awful I kept going to see if it got any better.

It didn't.

So that one is quite rightly not on the list...

I am rather partial to https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/Ports/megawads/amdosia though.

One I first played many, many years ago and it's definitely dated now, but I recommend it for some old-school distraction.

Well, I want to vote but I haven't finished none of these lol. It's so much stuff to play and I suck at Doom... Going to play these someday however

Just realized that I accidentally put in two DTWiD options so I removed one of them and added Requiem.

Was by accident. I removed one of them and added Requiem.

That's all well and good but you and I need to sit down and have a talk.

There's a distinct lack of Alien Vendetta on that list and that's simply unacceptable. Don't make me resort to mesmerism and other such quackery. Do you really want Uri Geller to turn up at your doorstep?

This is no idle threat, I'll deploy him if that is what it takes.

To be fair to pcorf, even though it's not the greatest megawad (and not even the greatest of the MM trilogy), Requiem does belong in this conversation. It's a good wad and an important milestone in Doom modding history.

..AV is still better though :O

Totally agree. Requiem bridged the quality gap between wads like tnt, MM and MM2, and the much later AV, which set the tone for everything that followed on from there.

But what version of AV do we add to the poll? :o

I feel its often unfair to lump the old classics in with the modern stuff like Skillsaw's everything. Last few times ive tried to play an old megawad, its hard to get into due to the pioneering days of new texture use, where everyone 'had' to throw out the old ugly stock stuff. Requiem's first few maps are ugly as sin due to that, as are a lot of Perdition's Gate and Hell to Pay. Takes a while to get used to the aesthetic. Icarus suffers from this too. I'd probably group megawads into several tiers depending on thier era, noones going to compare Memento Mori to Ancient Aliens :p

I think most people (although not all) will agree to have the 2nd version of AV (the one with Clandestine Complex).

That's because you are trying to compare apples with oranges. They are not necessarily better or worse, they just have different styles and mentality.

I need to find out of Valley of Echoes can be imported into AV's second release as Map 33 without texture issues, would solve the whole 'two AVs' thing nicely.

I dunno, a lot of the modern users have talked about not being able to go back to pre skillsaw/btsx/xaser wads. Me, I love older content the most, a lot of modern stuff feels a bit...dry and too orchestrated for me. Especially with all those lumps inside them that dictate how to play and remove control from the user, looking at you Deathless!

No End in Sight is probably the best modern thing ive played. Didn't leave me feeling exhausted after E1 like Double Impact did.

Definitely, Requiem deserves to be on the list.

I understand if Pcorf preferred to leave AV off the list, different tastes and all that. I'm a big fan of it myself but I'm far too laid back to kick up a genuine fuss about it. That's what the banter was about with my posts, just winding him up because it's not every day you see one of these lists without AV on it somewhere.

I don't rate Requiem as highly as MM 1 & 2 but it was an enjoyable Wad. As you said it was a big deal back in the day when it came out. But even the name alone carries significant meaning and calls back to a time when the future of Doom was less certain.

Yes, it's time for a trip back to a time of great pestilence. When mankind huddled together for warmth in hovels as famine and pox ravaged the land. A time when mythical folk such as leprechauns walked the earth, shouting 'top of the morning to ye' as they performed some ridiculous jig and meandered past bemused travellers on the road. This period of mind-shattering utter insanity was known as the 90's.

During the latter half of the 90's, polygons and 3D were the next big thing. Even I thought Doom was on its last legs at the time and I was obsessed with it. There was a lot of discussion about that amongst friends back then. By around 97-98 it was hard to convince them otherwise with games like Unreal coming out. It might have been different for others, that was just my experience.

Dark days indeed, although it didn't matter in the long run. Doom soared to new heights.

I really need to cut back on the caffeine, I forgot who I was talking to with that last part. Well if nothing else it'll serve a use for the unaware, as long as they disregard the paragraph about fairies and stuff. Because that was obviously fantasy/humour.

I know what you're thinking but you'd be surprised, there's always one that's like 'Wow! Really?'.

Anyway, I've had my daft moment. Time to hit the sack, night all.

I slighly edited my post while you are writing (for better wording), but yeah... different wads will cater to different people. I personally love both of them, each style have their own set of pros and cons and there are those I can't even tell if it's "modern" or not, like No End in Sight. :-)

Yeh, except if we enable some eager excitement to be elicited by such exquisite alliteration work. (I did!)
