Viles are archer in two dimensions

Any FPS enemy with a lock on that goes “I’m gonna deal a lot of damage unless you take cover in 3, 2, 1…!” is basically an homage to the archvile. He’s the initial mold of those “laser sighted” sniper tropes in shooters.
 

This in addition to bringing the idea of a “revive enemy” mechanic means he’s owed one serious hug. Thanks, Archie.
