Creating a custom .dll file

So...I may be beyond help, but I wanted to at least try to ask because I've been researching it for a while and have wanted to learn anything related to source code compiling. It should be said that I have absolutely no formal coding background. I do have experience with Decorate, ZScript and basic scripting in Doom 3, and am able to read things enough to have an idea of what it's doing and what I want to change.

I've seen tutorials for compiling Doom 3's source code with Visual Studio 2010 and 2013, but I have 2019 and wonder if I should get an older version. I've also read and watched tutorials on creating custom dll files in general, but I don't really know how to relate it to anything I want to do.

I'm wanting to add a few things to the game that can't be done without adding new script events etc, but I haven't gotten beyond being able to open the source code in Visual Studio, though I'm enjoying poking around in there. I have DirectX SDK installed as well, for what it's worth.

At this point I don't even really know what I'm asking for, as the best case scenario in my head is to have a video call with someone who can watch my screen and walk me through the process and answer questions I may have. But any documentation would be helpful, as I've been interested in coding for a while and have learned a lot considering I don't even know what I need to learn. I don't know anyone in real life who knows anything about computers but I've been enjoying my own journey so far. I'm not looking for an easy route by any means either. If the best way for me to learn how to create a custom dll file for Doom 3 is to take a programming course, then I will do it, I just wanted to get some feedback and perhaps some resources from anyone who might know what direction to point me to.
