About You: List 9 important Doom WADs.

I love this thread, it's really fun seeing everyone's replies. Here's my own, probably going to be one of the least relatable ones here due to all of the little goofball entries i haven't seen anyone else bring up:

This thread is such a wild ride. I've spend the last hour+ looking at everyone's choices, making my own list, then looking back over the thread yet again. It's so funny to see the vastly different Doomy histories and "schools of Doomy thought" everyone comes from!

AKSHULLY, I found your list quite relatable for the most part, so there :^)

I LOL'd at this choice. Yes, the DBPs are great, and yes, you should feel guilty.

(I'd also like to use this opportunity to say that all of my posts regarding favorite maps/wads/whathaveyou prior to this one are no longer relevant.)

Thanks for the thread, Jimmy!

The 'always come back to' category is interesting.  Are there grounds for saying a question like that is the best test of what is someones true favourite wad? Desire to replay as the best metric of how good something is.

(I haven't played enough wads to submit).

Spoiler

Memento Mori I & II - Some of the most iconic and catchy Doom music! Mark Klem and David Shaw were like the Jimmy and Stewboy of their era.

Doom 2 In Spain Only - I absolutely loved this megawad! It kept my attention from start to finish. Unlike other megawads, the last stretch doesn't throw the long and uninteresting maps at you. This and along with the awesome soundtrack, it was an amazing experience and probably the most fun I've ever had with Doom!

Also the ending :)

JPCP - I've heard this megawad has a lot of interesting and fun maps, and Mt. Pain's video on it peaked my interest!

Doom 2 Reloaded - I'm not sure if this one is hated or not, but I've heard mixed receptions and didn't know what else to put here so...

The first and last 10 maps are a bit of a slog, but I really liked the city levels.

Sunder - As others have said, 'hate' is a strong word. I'll admit the architecture and scale of the maps is incredible, but I'm not really

into slaughtermaps.

Skulltag DM Maps and MM8BDM - When I first started playing Doom back in 2013, I used Skulltag as my main sourceport for some reason, so you bet I played with the bots all day and used the sv_fastweapons 2 cheat :)

I also had MM8BDM v2, so you bet I also played with the bots all day and jammed to the music!

Plutonia - Imo, Plutonia is the perfect mix of challenge and simplicity. Most of the levels are short and action-packed, and the MIDI Pack

is really good.

It Only Gets Worse - My favourite jokewad. The first three levels or so are your average "lol its bad doom design" jokewad, but from there Wills starts adding cutscenes, custom textures, and enemies. Hilarity ensues.

Spoiler

Favorite Soundtrack: Ancient Aliens

It was a really tough call between AA, Eviternity, Speed of Doom, and Plutonia 2. But I decided to pick AA, giving bonus point for "the entire soundtrack was composed by a single musician, Stuart Rynn". The cover by Xeotroid made it even better, so feel free to check it out.

Favorite of all time: Alien Vendetta

Another tough call between AV, Plutonia 2, Scythe 2, Valiant, Eviternity. The bonus point was given with "nostalgic factor", since it was the first full classic doom megawad I've ever played. And it was the megawad that made me decide 'man, I should make something like this.'

Favorite Ending: Going Down

What an ending for a fun megawad with hilarious plot. I wish there's a sequel of Going Down for real. Honorable mentions go to BTSX E1 and Ancient Aliens.

Haven't played, but want to: Supplice

I haven't played it, because it's not released yet. Still, it's one of the most anticipated upcoming doom engine-based games to me.

You love, everyone hates: Eviternity

I do know that many people love the megawad itself. I'm talking about one particular custom monster, Astral Cacodemon. Many people hated that monster for being unfair, while the answer for me was simply "don't get too close + keep strafing". Still, I understood the opinions, and decided to nerf its attack pattern for the final version.

You hate, everyone loves: shoot!.wad

It may be a good level for warming up, but I'd rather play SSL2 or UD3M15 for that.

Fondest Memory: WolfenDoom - Second Encounter

While AV was the first classic doom pwad (which still has the elements from classic doom) I've ever played. This was the actual first pwad I've ever played. Back then, the idea of playing Wolfenstein on Doom engine was really cool, so I decided to see that by myself.

Always come back to: Doom

Nothing much to say. The first episode of Doom is short and simple, but fun and enjoyable, both SP and MP.

Guilty Pleasure: supergun2.wad

Hey, at least I didn't put any cheat codes, and it's just a "gameplay mod". :P

Shoot!.wad is seriously the most annoying wad of all time. All it really tests is how low your ping is. I don't get how it's practice because there's no arena other than shoot! that plays like it - most arenas are actually fun and have spots to take cover, stairs, multiple planes, etc etc..

Guilty Pleasure: supergun2.wad

Hey, at least I didn't put any cheat codes, and it's just a "gameplay mod". :P

You know, I never got why the virgin supergun2.wad was always played on those old ZDaemon servers when the chad SUPRWEP8.DEH exists and has since the mid 90s.. I guess just because supergun2 is a little less OP :)

it's pretty funny seeing all the people who think the community even likes hell revealed, let alone love it

Even though it is widely recognised as not aging well I feel it gets a decent amount of respect/nostalgia. Possibly it might end up in a lot of people's "guilty pleasure" slot?

It does have memorable moments, and some OK maps, but for the most part it's not even that it aged poorly... it just wasn't good to begin with.

City in the Clouds owns though, I'm sure there's plenty of players who still appreciate when that kinda level drops!

We did have a dehacked patch of super weapons in here, which was basically a modified version of SUPRWEP8.DEH, with more ammo capacity and health/armor. The dehacked patch was called zzang.deh, (a slang, which roughly means "epic" or "best" in korean) and it was featured in one of my youtube videos, called "killing 3000 cyberdemons". But yeah, supergun2.wad was the one, chosen by the most of ZDaemon servers back then.

Explanations:

  • Favourite Soundtrack: ZDCMP2 has a great main track, but also the rest of the music is very enjoyable and isn't MIDIs, which is nice in itself. I was tempted to put in 25yoe, as I picked it out myself, but there's some properly crap MIDIs in there.
  • Favourite of All Time: ZDCMP1 because it's just a little more digestible than ZDCMP2 and captures whimsy from my favourite period of ZDoom mapping that ZDCMP2 just doesn't quite manage, what with it's additional polish and story.
  • Favourite Ending: ZDCMP2 has a great boss sequence and fraught escape, but even better is if you've made it through NG+ twice, as you get an amusing joke ending after the escape (I think... I've never checked it out myself, but I was involved with the idea)
  • Haven't Played But Want To: There's a couple of options here, and my main reason for this is that I actually don't care much for Doom at the moment and am happy playing other games. Rowdy Rudy 2 gets the nod as Doomkid has a strong track record and has a similar idea about the joys of Doom at lower difficulties to me.
  • You Love, Everyone Hates: I don't think I feel strongly enough in favour of any project that isn't also well-liked to have an answer here. I reckon plenty of things I like aren't popular enough, and the main influences for most mappers aren't from the WADs I wish they were, but that's not the same as everybody hating what I love.
  • You Hate, Everyone Loves: I could chuck a list here that goes on a long time, but basically the endless glut of Scythe 2 and Alien Vendetta-inspired megaWADs is tedious for me. I lose interest way before MAP30 and can usually point to an escalation in mass of monsters that I don't have patience for, coupled with everything being trapped or a set piece. It's very popular on here, and I just am not interested.
  • Fondest MemoryCommunity Chest 3 - not the mapset itself, which I revisited not long ago and found to be a slog, but the sheer excitement of my first proper community project contribution. The anticipation of the release, the anxiousness of looking into the comments and the joy of getting a couple of positive posts from some notable names was a roller coaster that got me into community projects for a good 10 years or so, before the ubiquity of them and frequency of maps that put me off of actually playing them made participation seem pointless.
  • Always Come Back ToZDCMP1, for the same reasons it's my favourite. It's basically the apex of the era I loved most, tied as it was to my discovery of everything ZDoom and how new and exciting it was at the time.
  • Guilty PleasureYakworld - there's a fair few old maps I liked at the time (the 90s) and still enjoy now. This is easily the one with the most personality.

Favourite soundtrack- There's a lot of memorable soundtracks across megawads but this one had the most potent earworms that likes to pop up in my head at the most unsuspecting times- like Angry Science and Alien Jungle.

Favourite of all time- Sunlust, yeah. I think when you've mapped for a long time, playing amazing doom maps for the first time seem to lose its mystery and impact and you don't get the same feeling you used to when you first start playing pwads. But this magical package brought up some of those old feelings again and subverted quite a few expectations of how doom gameplay mechanics, let alone aesthetics, should be designed. This is a big source of inspiration for me, especially for some of my PL3 maps.

Favourite Ending- Hard to pick, there's quite a few, like Ancient Aliens, Eviternity, and Heartland, but I think Going Down, a great megawad in its own right, came up with the best storyline progression and wrapped it up in style. Not an easy thing to pull off.

Haven't played but want to- There's heaps I haven't played but would like to, but JCP may be top of the list. I'm very aware of tatsurd-cacocaco and manbou's excellent mapping abilities (they've made a few crackers for PL3) so I have no doubt I need to check this out.

You love, everyone hates- It's so hard to work out what people like or dislike in the community, but I've picked NDCP2 purely because it hasn't been mentioned often and it has its quirky charms. Also the first project I took part of so there's a fair bit of nostalgia tied to this.

You hate, everyone loves- I don't think Hell Revealed 2 is universally loved (lol mtpain27) but still. I dare say I have been influenced by this mapset but in the end it has not aged well. A lot of design choices are nonsensical and awful, and it's very very tedious.

Fondest memory- Plutonia was pretty much the first official wad I played through (after shareware doom) when I was 8 years old. I played Doom2 6 years later. A lot of memories tied up with playing through Plutonia, especially when I first came across Map31 and 32, that was a scary moment. Undoubtedly formed my base expectations of how doom maps should look and play like.

Always come back to- Scythe 2, duh. There's something uniquely magical about this megawad. I've tried my best to capture this same magic but didn't quite get there. I'm not sure anyone will ever come close. Could just be the nostalgia. An excellent trend-setting balanced all-round classic.

Guilty Pleasure- Well I did make it for myself! Like the saying goes, 'masturbation is sex with someone you love'.

(diversion to rant at MtPain)

(Hey man, being a kid doesn't invalidate the fondness. Unless the fucking Doomguy himself manifests in our reality, kicks my door down and shakes my hand, I have accepted the fact that my fondest Doom memories will remain in the 90s and early 00s. That doesn't mean I'm not making new fond Doomy memories on the daily, but Childlike wonder is a tough sensation to top...)

You're absolutely right, but I wanted to pay special attention to a wad that gave me a sense of childlike wonder from MAP 03 on. No other set of maps has had that effect on me since I was a kid, so I figured I'd give it a special mention. Obviously TNT: Evilution is my true Fondest Memory pick, though. No denying that!

Favorite Soundtrack: OG Doom, with TNT Evilution a close second. (Favorite all time single MIDI goes to Jimmy Paddock: "Hate Machine" from the SIGIL soundtrack. This track has honestly brought tears to my eyes.)

Favorite of all time: 'No End in Sight' by Emil Brundage, Xaser and Chris Lutz.

Favorite Ending: "Blades of Agony" Episode 3. What an epic journey to get there.

Haven't played but want to: DTWID lost episodes.

You love, Everyone Hates: TNT Evilution. The most epic of the classic megawads. Only outdone in thematic coolness by OG Doom itself. Also TNT Revilution, but it was less thematically interesting and more just a really good quality modern Doom2 megawad.

You hate, everyone loves: BTSX. 'Hate' is, of course, far too strong a word here, in fact I really enjoyed this "mega-megawad" and have played through it twice, but it felt very 'designed by committee.' Everything made sense and had great design principles. The monster placement was fantastic, every encounter was crafted, all the areas looked amazing, but I was never able to lose myself in the experience, because there was such logic and order to everything. There was none of the terrifying chaos, none of the feeling of  being surrounded by something that you couldn't quite make sense of, none of the incomprehensible, randomness that messed with your ability to comprehend and give context to. BTSX simply made far too much sense. Sometimes I knew there would be a secret in a certain area without even looking, simply because "Doom level design document 1047X" or whatever demanded that a secret be there. It was surreal and subtle that things like this would happen, but this is why I don't love such a wonderful and deservingly celebrated megawad.

Fondest Memory: OG Doom, Alien Vendetta, and Doom Deathmatch in the 90's

Always come back to: NEIS.wad, OG Doom, Final Doom, Alien Vendetta. Also other great DOom1 megawads such as Lunar Catastrophe and dtwid.

Guilty Pleasure: Playing Doom at all, seeing as how much stuff I am working my ass off to accomplish IRL. Plz forgive any implied arrogance here. Doom is awesome.

Also attempting to make maps. Attempting being the key word. Blown away by such greats as Eviternity and anything Skillsaw has touched, Darkwave0000, Emil Brundage, Xaser, Esselfortium, and too many others to mention. Much love to you guys.

I am starting to think that, given the number of times that TNT Evilution has been selected for this category, that perhaps it should no longer eligible for this category.

Well this was fun. Not sure if my guilty pleasure can be properly categorized as a "Doom wad" but it's the most fitting thing I could think of.
