Dreemurr Deceevurr Posted June 8, 2021 (edited) Don't feel like cracking open Paint.NET, so wall of text incoming. Favorite soundtrack: Eviternity and Ancient Aliens are of course brilliant, but my main soft spots are the Memento Mori and GothicDM soundtracks, as well as Hell Revealed 2, specifically Thrybse's contributions which are as authentic Scandinavian metal as you're gonna get in MIDI outside of outright cover songs. Also like the MIDI the Way id Did pack which dropped not too long ago, did a playthru of D2TWID with that and DoomRL Arsenal. Favorite of all time: Man this is a hard one to answer. For mapsets it's probably Icarus with it's consistent cycle of themes and Scythe with it's quick gameplay. For gameplay mods its probably Russian Overkill for being just so over the top, everything just feels like an attack animation in Super Robot Wars. Beautiful Doom is also one I like for enhancing the effects (and weapons if you wish) of the game while keeping the feel of classic Doom more or less intact. Favorite ending: Marswar. I'm not gonna spoil it, just play it or warp to map30 Haven't played, but want to: Total Chaos. It's insane that it runs on GZDoom, unfortunately that means even a NASA super computer would be brought to it's knees trying to play it. (Me being a wuss when it comes to actually playing horror stuff doesn't help) Ashes 2063 is also one I've been meaning to really dig into. You love, everyone hates: Eternal Doom. Of course the sprawl of the levels are a sticking point today but the medieval levels really do feel like a castle. You hate, everyone loves: Thy Flesh Consumed. That already sounds odd but to me the first level gives me a bad taste with the teleporting shotgunners and paucity of health items. Then you survive that only to be met with Perfect Hatred... I tend to skip it when replaying Doom 1 unless I'm playing a gameplay mod. For that matter I'm not too big on the current wave of slaughtermaps but mainly because I don't really have the patience or fortitude for them in single-player. I do like the architecture of some of the usual suspects like Sunder though. Fondest memory: Where to start? Playing the EDGE version of Goldeneye Doom, the glory days of Skulltag and getting blasted constantly because I was in elementary school at the time and played keyboard only at the longest time for some reason, Drown in Blood co-op with the mod that replaced the BFG with the Ripper Heart from Shadow Warrior being hit with chopsticks, playing Doom 3 at 15 FPS on a machine that was just barely able to run it, those old DeHackEd/DEHSUPP weapons mods for ZDoom like Xaser's Power Weapons. A lot of great times that happened to keep my spirits up as an autistic kid growing up in a red state in the mid-late 2000s. Now I wish people on Zandronum played more than just MM8BDM or Complex Doom survival on like Plutonia. Always come back to: Marswar. It was one of the earliest megawads I played, so it made an impression on me as a kid. Guilty pleasure: Of course there are a few. La Tailor Girl (AKA fanservice: the mod), Toon 2 (AKA 90s furry fandom: the mod), Mock 2 and it's pseudo-sequels The New Adventure and Mega Trickster's Mistake, Wills' jokewads (eg. The Archives Are Doomed), deathz0r Online: The Internet Made Stupid, Chuck Lai's Doom 2 X-Treme series, and Project Brutality. While the term guilty pleasure is kinda overwrought in my opinion I'm sure there are a couple choices here that would give people pause for giving them props in the first place. CherryPoptartzzz Posted June 9, 2021 Scythe 2 : I feel the use of metroid tracks in maps like Pharaos Tomb are so tasteful, honestly any of use metroid music in wads is fire 🔥 Alien Vendetta : I honestly just love everything about AV, simply a classic wad that years later still never gets old for me Valiant : Mind blowing boss fight and such a badass closing map Supplice : It is not out yet so I literally cant play it as much as I want to. I still constantly check for updates on it bc im that excited Sigil : Anything made for or styled after Doom 1 I automatically love BTSX : To clarify, I don't hate btsx at all, but I cant really say I looovveeed it as much as people praise it. Honestly its been a while since i last played but i honestly just felt a lot of the maps blend together in my head, maybe i'm just dumb but I just felt numb playing through the first episode. Maybe a replay will change my opinion. Demonsteele : I like anime girl sword fight, it fun and I use to play it a lot back in middle school along, playing a bunch of cool megawads with my own custom soundtracks containing deicide and morbid angel midis was so fun back in the day, and its even inspired my current project a ton, I want to make things that were as fun as I had playing demonsteele. Doom 2 Reloaded : One of my most played wads as a kid, idk why i played this one specifically so much but like AV for me I just never get tired of playing it. Sonic Robo Blast 2 : Honestly its not my ACTUAL guilty pleasure bc im too scared to post my number one, i still feel embarrassed loving srb2 as much as I do tho. Me and my friend natalie play srb2 online a ton and its literally some of the most fun i've had online 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Hawk of The Crystals Posted June 9, 2021 Smoothdoom, and the higher quality sounds pk3. Action doom. Action doom 2: urban brawl, yes, I will die on that hill. BTSX 1&2. Temple of the lizard men (series.) Doom 2: reloaded, great for when I want to procrastinate playing doom 2 Psychophobia. Arachnophobia. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
rzh Posted June 9, 2021 (edited) I've only played a few wads and finished even fewer, but here, I made a 9 wads image for Doom wads, and a more "meme" one that only includes other games and a Doom TC with the big format. Spoiler Spoiler Favourite soundtrack: I like it because it's good. Favourite of all time: I haven't finished it but it hooked me from the first level and saw videos of the ones I haven't managed to beat yet, and it's such a gorgeous wad that sits comfortably at the crossroad between old-school and modern Doom. Favourite ending: eh, I haven't finished Eviternity (another custom boss) or Scythe 2 (a huge, challenging map) and like many others I don't like the Icon of Sin, so Doom Zero wins by default because it plays a bit with the idea of a "wall texture turned into final boss" but it doesn't make it frustrating. Also has an epilogue. Haven't played: it intimidates me because I'm nowhere near as good as I should be in order to finish it, but I really dig playthroughs of it. I love: I'm not sure if everyone hates it, but I've seen people complain about things which I like about it. Also has a great soundtrack, some great environments and possibly the greatest status bar in history. I hate: I actually don't hate it, but I don't like the aesthetic of it, the lack of variety in environments and I'm not a big fan of the fights either, I don't know why. I guess disappointed fits the bill more than hate, because I really wanted to like this one and it's clear a lot of work went into it. I haven't played E2 yet. EDIT: now that I think about it Hell Revealed should've been here. Fondest Memory: map05. All of it. It got remixed into Valiant map27, which itself is a remix/ reboot/ sequel to an earlier Lunatic map. I'm sure most people already know this. Always come back to: what turned me from casual player to Doom fan. Nowadays it feels easy to pick up and play, and it has short enough maps that it's easy to drop right into it yet again. Guilty pleasure: I really like the music, how big some of the maps are, even if a few are bad I still really like TNT Evilution and prefer it over Doom 2. DrJordo Posted June 9, 2021 too lazy to fire up the image editor, who cares anyway? Favorite soundtrack: Ancient Aliens is practically the only wad with a memorable soundtrack for me (and Mock 2, but not for good reasons!). it's so different than what most other wads are doing. Favorite of all time: Hard to say...Alien Vendetta maybe? Could just be the nostalgia talking. So much good stuff out there that picking one is almost impossible. Favorite ending: both BTSXs (E3 never :( ) but 1 especially, with the sinking ship. Haven't played but want to: Every year I look at the cacoward winners/runners up and think, I should play these. Every year, I don't. You love, everyone hates: do people hate 1024? that's about as close to a "hated" wad that i like. even though the last level really sucks. You hate, everyone loves: slaughtermaps in general. not fun at all to me. at least they usually look nice. Sunder, for example, has great visuals but is a nightmare to slog through. Fondest memory: checking out Alien Vendetta for the first time. In particular, the epic setpieces of Demonic Hordes, the then-incredible monster count of Dark Dome, and of course, Misri Halek. It's number one on the "most memorable doom maps" list for a reason. Always come back to: Doomer Board Projects, they almost always having a striking visual style that keeps me coming back to them. Guilty Pleasure: The greatest joke wad of all time, Mock 2. Any joke wad would fit here, but this is the one I've spent far and away the most time with. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
whybmonotacrab Posted June 10, 2021 (edited) There should be a category for "Mod that's too hard for you but you keep smashing your head against it anyway because it's just that fucking good." I swear, Sunder is going to give me an aneurysm. Anyway: So this kind of gives the idea that I only like fast paced sets like Valiant and hate adventure maps like Eternal, but that is absolutely not the case. I respect Eternal, I just don't think it's held up. With Hell on Earth "Love" is kind of a stretch, but it's the only one I could think of that I liked that other people didn't. I've played the first two levels of Kama Sutra but couldn't get into it. I've heard it gets really damn good and I LOVED Gusta's work in Plutonia 2. DisgruntledPorcupine Posted June 10, 2021 (edited) Favourite soundtrack: Eviternity This was really close between Eviternity and Ancient Aliens, I think Eviternity wins very narrowly though. My absolute favourites from the set include Polar Expedition, Frozen Wilderness, Restless Restless, Rotted Roots, Brutal Schism, Land of Able, and Imaginarium. Favourite of all time: Ancient Aliens Incredible soundtrack, incredible gameplay, looks stunning, has a great sense of adventure, and has a nice humour element. This wad really kills it in almost every sense. Favourite ending: Back to Saturn X Episode 1 This one was close between this one and Sunlust. I chose to go with the solemn atmosphere that closes out this one. Still hard to believe that this beautiful closer is all vanilla compatible. Haven't played yet but want to: Kama Sutra I really have to get to this one sometime, and I have pretty much the same reasoning as the above comment. I absolutely love Gusta's maps in Plutonia 2, and would love to play more. You love, but everyone else hates: N/A I couldn't really pick one here because so far I've tended to avoid stuff that is universally hated. You hate, but everyone else loves: Requiem I respect this wad a great deal for its visuals for its time as well as some experimental engine tricks like the ghost Nazis in MAP23. However, I remember finding a vast majority of this wad to be a chore to play, with a lot of levels that annoyed me and I think I also took issue with ammo and weapon placement. Fondest Memory: Cleimos 2 It's close between this one and Eviternity, which provides the very specific memory of the yellow key slaughterfest in MAP15 with that gorgeous midi in the background. However, I have to shout out Cleimos 2 for being the first PWAD I ever played. Doom was the first videogame I ever played as a kid, and one day my grandpa went online and found out about custom WADs. I remember for whatever reason he was saying Cleimos 2 was one of the only ones my crappy little computer would be able to run, so they downloaded that for me to mess around with. I was probably like 6 years old and only ever played Doom running around in god-mode, or at the very least IDFAing constantly, so I wasn't really playing it properly, but fond memories nonetheless. I've revisited it recently and I still kind of like it today, might be nostalgia-driven but who knows! Always come back to: Japanese Community Project I love this wad a ton. From a pure combat perspective there are better wads for sure, but this thing has so much personality gushing out of it. It feels like a community project in the best possible way, as its such a great mixture of different styles and ideas, I'm sure anybody could find something to love here. I personally almost love it all front to back. Guilty Pleasure: Project Brutality I know it's not the most balanced experience, but I have a lot of fun messing around with this thing. It's been quite a long time since I've played with a gameplay mod actually, but I have a soft spot for this one in particular. T-Rex Posted June 11, 2021 (edited) Thought I'd give it a shot. Favourite Soundtrack - Plutonia 2 While it has a few of Doom and Doom 2's music, including Duke Nukem 3D's "Gut Wrencher," the majority is new, original music, and the best ones are by James Paddock, Stuart Rynn, and Jamie Robertson. Favourites of all time - Alien Vendetta and Requiem I consider it a tie between these two wads. They are absolute classics and showcase some of the most creative, visually appealing, atmospheric, action-packed, fun, and memorable maps made by some of the most talented Doom mappers of their respected times, and playing through those two wads is like a rite of passage for any Doomer out there, and exploring a variety of big worlds, which makes Alien Vendetta and Requiem really stand the test of time. Favourite ending - Eternal Doom The final map Excalibur may be so exhausting and mind bending, but that's what makes it really stand out. Most finales just stick with the Icon of Sin formula, but this is just an epic adventure that tests your puzzle solving skills to the utmost degree, and with dedication and patience, you'll finally reach the final area to waste Romero's head, which makes you feel as if you're on top of the world. Scythe and Scythe 2 have such incredible finales too, but nothing can top Eternal Doom's Excalibur. It's an experience unlike any other, and Bob Evans truly is the master of cryptic level progression and obtuseness, aside from Jim Flynn. Haven't played but want to - Japanese Community Project The level design just looks amazing and I can imagine the gameplay must be so much fun with high replay value. Runner-ups go to Super Sonic Doom and TNT: Revilution. I love, but everyone hates - Perdition's Gate This was a tough choice, but I'd have to go for Perdition's Gate. At first, I was going to pick Hell Revealed, but it doesn't seem to be as widely hated, and while I don't think Perdition's Gate is that much hated, it does get flack for being a commercially released wad that is so hard to find. Thank Tom Mustaine for releasing this along with Hell to Pay for everyone who heard of the Wraith duology to give a try. I hate, but everyone loves - Doom the Way id Did I can't say I hate any Doom wad, but I just don't get the hype for Doom and Doom 2 the Way id Did. I applaud the DtWiD team for their effort at imitating the style of the original Doom and Doom 2, but they just don't have the same magic and impact as the works produced by the original id crew back in 1993 and 1994. Sorry guys. I still look forward to see what you'd be attempting with Final Doom the Way id Did, though. Fondest memory - Memento Mori This was my first experience with custom made wads, and what got me into trying out other megawads. Excellent level design, and catchy music courtesy of Mark Klem. Always come back to - Hell Revealed I think anyone who knows me and my special fondness for Hell Revealed would see this coming. This is one megawad I always keep coming back to as I find it to be very important and appropriate for the formation of taste and development in Doom skills, and to thoroughly look into the megawad is to get yourself acquainted with the Casali brothers and other mappers at the same time. From its simplistic to visually appealing level design, coupled with challenging monster placement that makes you think and plan out how to tackle the combat scenarios, and there's aof course the rocking soundtrack from Rise of the Triad, I can describe Hell Revealed as a wad that has exceptional, refined, pleasing, fresh, well-knitted levels with such consistency that makes it the foremost wad of its time. Guilty Pleasure - Icarus: Alien Vanguard As much as it may have been Team TNT's compensation for giving Evilution to id Software for Final Doom, I find Icarus to be quite an entertaining and enjoyable set of maps that attempts to tell a cohesive story. The spaceship levels remind me of Star Wars and Star Trek, the planet levels are nicely varied, and the simulation levels are so surreal and imaginative that I could tell the mappers had so much fun creating the megawad. While the music may not be a factor to a guilty pleasure, they are most certainly amazing with such great themes, including the Icarus motif. KubaloBlackMT Posted June 11, 2021 Favorite Soundtrack: Doom 2 I think that Doom 1's soundtrack is definitely the best, but I played Doom 2 first, and it has the soundtrack that I remember the most. I like that Running from Evil is Hangar 18 from Megadeth, I like that Into Sandy's City reminds me of Dallas, I like that Bye Bye American Pie fits with a map like Barrels O' Fun, I like that Countdown to Death is the track used for the very first Hell level, I like that Healer Stalks has salsa, I like that Between Levels sounds like Wolfenstein, I like that DOOM sounds like a church organ and makes me think of walking at night, I like that In The Dark also reminds me of nighttime and that I keep humming it all the time, I like that Shawn's Got The Shotgun is South of Heaven, I like that The Dave D. Taylor Blues means I'm going to be stuck in that level for hours, I like that The Demon's Dead is creepy, I like that Adrian's Asleep also reminds me of nighttime, I like that Message for the Archvile also means I'm going to be stuck in the level for hours, I like that Waiting For Romero To Play is gloomy, I like that Opening to Hell is spooky, and the Intermission screen gives a creepy atmosphere to the game. So yeah, DOOM 2's music is my favorite :p Favorite of all time: The Unspoken Operator Pretty good, I wonder if the author will ever finish and release it, don't ask how I have access to this, totally not mine! Favorite Ending: SIGIL Haha Baphomet can go suck my hairy buns! Anyways, time to save Earth before it's too late. Haven't Played But Want To: Induction I've literally just heard of this wad. The castle Jpeg looks mouthwatering and gives be 200 boners. You Love, Everyone Hates: Hell To Pay I like that the story, "Planet Hell" imprisons Earth or its people I think, and they've got Imps with pitchfork hands, drawers and dining rooms, killer robots and living metals. For all I know they probably have a judicial court or something. Anyways, the wad was fun and while it may not have the most attractive textures and sprites, the idea is there. The space parts admittingly is a little weird but I can accept that. You Hate, Everyone Loves: Japanese Community Project Ok, so I don't really hate it, I just haven't been interested in it for a long time, and I haven't fully finished it. There's really good maps in this wad, in fact I'm sure all of them are good. Like I said, I just haven't felt interested in it. So maybe this is more like "You Haven't Been Interested In, Everyone Loves: Japenese Community Project". Fondest Memory: The Evil Unleashed I think it was the first wad I downloaded, It's a 9 level wad for Doom 1's episode 3. I think there were older episodes but I hadn't checked those out since. Always Come Back To: Rudy 2: Powertrip I think it's the beefed up guns and plentiful walking meatsacks to shoot at, as well as the tropical theme. Doomkid knows what satisfies the Id. Guilty Pleasure: "A Fistful of Doom" technically, my real guilty pleasure is the Monsterhunt wad that I can't remember the name of, but I can't find the titlepic and can't be bothered to look it up right now but uh... Fistful of Doom could definitely take it's place in my opinion. Just kill anyone who ain't your amigo for that 100% kills score. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
LadyMistDragon Posted June 12, 2021 Finally have the time to explain my choices! Favorite Soundtrack: Memento Mori This probably won't be many people's first choice, but the music here was largely original(is that the case with TNT: Revilution. I sitll need to play that, with only a few of them showing up in the Mark Klem-created Cringe. Anyways, this is incredibly catchy, with strong elements of jazz-rock and melodic stuff intersecting to create something truly spectacular. Favorite of all Time: Ancient Aliens For something I only got fourteen maps in before some seriously frustrated stuff at the time forced me to quit, the visual style and gameplay put everything to shame. Favorite ending: I'm not sure what is meant here. Favorite final showdown? Doom's not known for story Haven't Played but Want To: No End in Sight For something apparently designed for Doom.wad, it has an epicness and scale of scope that's quite shocking. Yeah, even Eviternity can't quite compete. You Love, Everyone Hates: Enigma I've never actually played it. This is more of a stand-in for all those mid-to-late 90s wads with puzzles absolutely required for progression that @MtPain27 completely slammed in his Master Levels videos. To me, they are memories of a time long passed, that will (thankfully) never come again. You Hate Everyone Loves: Doom 64 for Doom II Demakes are quite possibly among the stupidest ideas ever conceived in fan gaming. Why does anyone think I'd want to play an uglier version of Quake with QDoom? (and no, I am not just bitter that I couldn't get that running). Doom 64 has a distinct visual style that bears hardly any resemblance to the game it spawned from. Limiting yourself to Doom II textures while recreating Doom 64 maps is something I'm NEVER going to be down with Fondest Memory: TNT Evilution Memento Mori could possibly compete, but the issue is that I only played it for the first time in 2013. Honestly, that's probably a good thing because installing Doom in DOS when it was already installed in Windows 95 just so I could play...no, and I fell in absolute love with much of the original sountrack. Barring some incredibly bland maps, the design was in some ways going places Doom II sure didn't want to. Always Come Back To: 180 Minutes Por Vivre Not to say that I've actually replayed it in 2 months, but there's a certain addictive, ebullient nature to much of the combat that might speak to this megawad's continental origins. Not to mention I now know who Primeval is (the composer of "Your Move, Cybie" which appears in Map 15). Guilty Pleasure: Eternal Doom III It's the sort of wad I'm not even that certain why I enjoy when it shows its age perhaps more blatantly than Memento Mori II for instance. lokbustam257 Posted June 14, 2021 Since I don't know how to edit images and I'm stuck on my cursed phone, how about an essay instead? Favorite Soundtrack: Ancient Aliens. You all probably already know the reason for this one right? Favorite of All Time: Ultimate Doom 2. This WAD was one of my early and favorite WAD, and it happen from curiosity in Duke it Out in Doom mod for 3DGE on Moddb, at first I thought it was another it was another enhancement GZDoom mod for Doom 2 but what I get is something else entirely... Favorite Ending: Ancient Aliens. Just finish the WAD, I don't want to spoil it. Haven't Played But Want To: Eviternity. Too busy replaying Ancient Aliens and Antaresian Reliquary, enough said. You Love Everyone Hates: Ultimate Doom Episode 3: Inferno. I kinda love Inferno, I don't why, maybe because its music or its atmosphere. (P.S. I also love Doom 2 MAP24) You Hate Everyone Loves: Double Impact. It's boring to me. Fondest Memory: Ancient Aliens. It's mostly because of the story and its amazing soundtrack by Stewboy. Always Comeback To: Ancient Aliens (again). Along with Valiant: Vaccinated Edition, the WAD is something I always comeback to when playing gameplay mods, mostly because its high enemy count. Oh, and I still prefer AAliens over Valiant. Guilty Pleasure: Going Down. I enjoy this WAD, but it's too cramped for my liking. de en 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

MajorRawne Posted June 15, 2021 Favourite Soundtrack: Alien Vendetta, everyone who says otherwise is wrong and had their trousers down at the moment they said it (this is not opinion, this is fact). Favourite of all time: Alien Vendetta. Favourite ending: Oh good, I get to choose my favourite "stock Doom 2 text followed by Doom 2 monster gallery". Let's say Kama Sutra for the Geri Halliwell stage show they called map 30. Haven't played but want to: Crossed loads of these off my list this year. Er, probably Valiant or Deus Vult II. You love, everyone hates: Loudly being Anders Johnsen's fanboi. You hate, everyone loves: Bobby Prince music. Jesus, it doesn't even qualify as "embarrassing vintage porn" and certainly doesn't qualify as "heavy metal" (unless genre standards have dropped). Listen to the Thunderforce 3 soundtrack, then Doom 2's soundtrack. I cringe every time my girlfriend hears me playing Doom. Fondest memory: Playing AV in Legacy co-op on Friday nights. Also, Silver Mirror from Darkhell. Always come back to: Alien Vendetta. Also, Hell Revealed and Hell Revealed 2 for some reason. Guilty pleasure: Playing the Hell Revealeds on UV. Miles more fun than modern Sunder-style maps, as the Hell Revealeds actually play like traditional megawads. It's a lost skill for sure. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

TJG1289 Posted June 16, 2021 9 hours ago, MajorRawne said: I should have clarified Bobby Prince's Doom and Doom 2 soundtrack. I think @Melter is getting at the fact that 12 out of the 14 Bobby Prince tracks used in AV are from Doom, with one each from Doom 2 and RotT thrown in for good measure. So about a third of AV's soundtrack consists of tracks from a soundtrack you say you don't like, which is a pretty good chunk. And those 12 Doom tracks are played in half of Ultimate Doom's levels, so it would seem to me that you actually like at least half of Doom's soundtrack. So is it that the other songs used in AV are the ones you prefer and you still don't care for the Doom 1 and 2 tracks used, or does Bobby Prince's songs work better with AV's levels? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

jmac Posted June 24, 2021 (edited) I feel like I'll need to explain my choices for a couple of these. Doom 2: Of course it's going to look strange to choose doom 2 as something everyone hates, but I haven't really played any wads yet that weren't generally well-loved. I picked doom 2 with two specific levels in mind: Barrels of Fun and the Chasm. Both of those levels get a lot of hate, but they've always been some of my favourites. No End In Sight: Hate is a stronger word than what I'd use to describe my feelings towards this one. It was one of the first custom wads I played, and I remember being both thoroughly impressed by its visuals, and thoroughly frustrated by its gameplay. The lack of doom 2 monsters and weapons was a big detriment for me. A lot of the maps, specially later on, were exhausting, and I ended up wishing there was an end in sight. I've been planning to revisit it at some point, to give it another shot. Maybe my opinion on it will change. Edited June 25, 2021 by jmac 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
