What happens when we die?

Recommended Posts

I'd like to believe that we get reincarnated into another person, learning new things and experiences until our soul is perfected. Heaven and Hell are terrifying to me as a concept because there are some sins that cannot be forgiven. I want to carry on after death and I want to be able to experience everything there is in life. I fear that there will be nothing in the end, but there's no proof of that. I hope we live on after.

Ashes to ashes. Dust to dust. That's what happens when we die.

There is no Heaven and there is no Hell. Rest easy.

To carry on after "death", consider cryogenic freezing. [Caveat: The revived person will have the original genetic structure, but will likely not have the memories, personality, etc. that make a person who s/he is.]

While the notion of an immortal soul is appealing, especially within the context of reincarnation, it's probably a giant hoax created to bilk the gullible of their hard-earned wealth.

On the other hand, I might be full of shit and don't have a clue about the true nature of the universe.

Probably the same thing as what happens before we are born. Which is to say, we cease to be conscious or distinct from anything else that exists.

That said, I have fear of death too and it's valid. Probably a big part of the reason religion exists is to assuage those fears, and I do not want to take that away from you.

I used to believe in all that hocus pocus junk about afterlives and whatever but after all this time, I see now it's all been a big lie. I don't believe in heaven or hell or any of that soul baloney.

So I think, your brain shuts down and you end up going back into the void of nothingness forever. Maybe your atoms get to form a new star someday or whatever but that's about it. It's a one way ticket into the perpetual darkness. Oh well, gonna have a beer, listen to some Deep Purple and edit some Doom.

If you believe in god and that kinda stuff, that's fine by me but I decided to leave that club years ago.

Nothing will happen. Your memories gone. Your consciousness gone. Think about when you are asleep but have no dreams or if you've had surgery, when you're under sleep inducing amnesia. Just nothing.

But that's really dark, so to end on a positive note

My problem with Heaven and Hell is that they ignore the essence of the reason we have nerves/feelings and such.

If you put your hand on a stove, you're filled with pain and fear as a signal to take your hand off the stove.

But if your hand got stuck there and you knew without a doubt there's nothing you could do, that becomes your new normal.

The same with Heaven. Being in a state of eternal bliss would be awesome. But it's only awesome compared to what we have here on Earth.

I like to imagine a scenario where we learn to 'upload' their consciousness into a machine that gives them perfect pleasure forever.

Another advanced species comes to the planet to visit, finds the machine, and somehow knows exactly what it does.

Do they unplug it?

I'd argue it doesn't matter one way or the other.

Gods, devils, if they exist, what use do they have with providing pain or pleasure to mortal beings millennium after millennium? Do they have nothing else to do?

I'm not worried about it one way or the other. Either Hell is a place to learn my lesson and after a trillion years or whatever the god I didn't know exists has some other plan for me.

Or I spend eternity in suffering, to either struggle against or get used to. At that point it doesn't matter.

Why? I think people forget that not only will there be nothing: you won't be around to be sad about there being nothing! Just think back to how sad you were before you were born, about the fact that you didn't exist.

It’s arguable that there is no way a morally just entity could punish mortals with eternal damnation. I don’t believe this stuff to begin with but I also think if it were real to some degree, hell (at least mainstream western culture hell) is nonsensical from any rational perspective. The simplest way I could make my argument is it would be like watching a toddler crawl into oncoming traffic while an adult looks on and says “welp I gave them all the tools to not make this stupid choice but I suppose it’s how it goes”.

Any afterlife that is just earthly paradise forever sounds kind of like an impossibility also, as existence is so frightening that only an opium fueled endless thought numbing orgy could really start to push away the existential dread that any earthly existence is bound to have no matter how luxurious and at that point Heaven is basically self-medicating with some ethereal Xanax which doesn’t sound very transcendent. What disturbs me is how existence seems to just be endless, what’s outside of existence? More existence? Well that’s scary, what’s at the top? And what would the alternative be? Nothingness? And now the panic attack starts lol :(

Also, as for reincarnation, my understanding as a westerner who only knows about eastern thought through pop new age sources is that it is basically a “bad” thing, existence is suffering, rebirth is an endless cycle and the freedom from it is through transcending material desire upon which you can instead obtain nirvana upon death which means, roughly, that you are extinguished like a candle and free of the cycle of rebirth. I think living life is fun and enjoyable but there are certain inescapable points of existential dread about “why” and “how” that exist outside of scientific understand and seem to not have even a hypothetically satisfactory answer that a human could process. I don’t even know what I would want some higher order being to tell me the reason for existing is, if I had the opportunity to ask. I can’t even fathom what answer would help make me feel less scared by all of it. So I think that the best thing is to try and enjoy things as they are and honestly only an afterlife that involves loss of ego or self seems to really make sense once you get past the scariness of it. Anything else just feels cruel or like some sort of metaphysical Matrix.

Reincarnation is interesting because there’s multiple beliefs around it that differ. Some believe reincarnation is only for bad people, they get reincarnated into an animal that will live a life of pain or torture. Then they’re given the chance to redeem their soul once they die again, or they’re cursed like that forever to be reborn and to die like that again and again.

Others believe it’s the soul changing bodies after death. There have been some strange things I’ve heard about kids having dreams about WW2 when they weren’t even alive to witness it, etc. but there’s really no way to prove that, you either believe the person or you don’t.

If either are true, I’d rather the latter. I’m probably a bad person by every religion’s standards, and don’t want to come back as an animal that gets slaughtered, tortured, or worse. I’d rather opt for strange nightmares for the first few years of my new life instead.

I found out 1 second later :P

(edit: personal note)

I don't follow any religion, but I believe all of their gods do exist. Not in the form of an old bearded man floating in the sky watching everybody, but in the form of the physical actions of the people who believe there is something beyond this world. A christian is more likely to give a homeless person a hot meal & I think they make their god physically exist by acting on their behalf.

I would like to believe in the afterlife, ending up on Snake Way with an intact body would be ideal. Unfortunately humans think way too much, we're too imaginative & creative for our own good. I never see my dog taking her time to worship Genghis Canine. I've lived on a large cattle farm for over a decade & with so many animals it's inevitable that you'll see one pass away in front of you. I don't see how it would be any different for people.

It seems to me that living an afterlife can only happen through other peoples memories. Most of my peers were taken too soon & only 4 of us made it past 30yrs of age. I hope I'm wrong because it would be great to see them all again. The fact that they're not here makes me want to do as much as I can with my life because they're not here to enjoy it.

Make it count!

Well, I do believe in Heaven and Hell, and that there's a God that will send you to somewhere, either to be happy in Heaven, to punish you if you were bad, or if you're forgiven but you still have some minor sins, you'll be sent to the purgatory to clean your name. Now, the physical death (IMO) may just feel like going to sleep, of course, it depends on the context, but nobody knows...

"And the Raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting
On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;
And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon’s that is dreaming,
And the lamp-light o’er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;
And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor
Shall be lifted — nevermore!"

By other hand, if you ask me, there bunch of theories around there. One of them told that there is no much difference between death and regular everyday dream. Only one - in first case you never back and go somewhere else... Places, that you can visit and remember sometimes in the dreams, is a sort of unrealized sectors of reality. The stranger they looks - the far you soul gone during the dream from the place where you currently are.

Idefinite void and nothingness. It is impossible to comprehend something you cannot survive. That's why we create such notions of heaven or hell in religion. We cannot comprehend it so we fear it and hang on to hope of something else.

As much as i think Buddhism has some top tier aesthetics, i don't believe that there's any form of afterlife personally. The concept itself can provide comfort, but i think it can also sometimes discourage people from putting in the effort to improve their situation, health, etc. and enjoy the little things in life, hoping that things will get better after death.

Well. Depends. Especially if remind what circle of "Samsara" is. In that case some esoteric theories might look more interesting then "classic religions", that they are often referred to as "crafty" also.

The whole resurrection thing bemuses me. If you get resurrected but all memories of your previous life are lost are you truly resurrected?

Nothing, I hope. One life is more than enough for me, I've seen enough, as much as I'm sure God wants to go on fishing trips with me in Heaven, I'd rather that my soul doesn't leave that grave, nice and cozy in there.
