Dusty_Rhodes Posted June 5, 2021 Hello all, what are some good laid back adventure wads? I'm really looking for something with nice architecture and a more relaxed design. I just finished Scythe, before that I played Plutonia and Hell Revealed. Frankly, I'm tired (ha ha) and need something with quality atmosphere and simple easier gameplay. I still want to play Doom, just not be slaughtered continuously. :) Yes, I have played Hexen and Hexen 2, I love those games. But right now I want to play some Doom, just with puzzles and interesting levels. Any suggestions are appreciated. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Reelvonic Posted June 5, 2021 not classic doom but doom 64 is nice. but for classic doom id recommend maybe golden souls, or Finely Crafted Fetish Film https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/104608-finely-crafted-fetish-film-7-puzzle-maps-for-boom/ 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

I should've mentioned that. Thank you, I'll check your suggestions. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Omniarch Posted June 5, 2021 Heh, I was on the verge of posting a similar thread myself, amusingly. As for recommendations, Bury My Heart Knee Deep seems to meet your requirements pretty well. It is large, non-linear, and relatively casual on lower difficulties, with a classic E1 vibe and dozens of secrets to discover. It is basically a vanilla Doom take on the metroidvania formula, complete with powerup-based progression, lots of optional side content and a high degree of interconnectivity. Truly a must-play for any fans of the adventure genre. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

Michael Jensen Posted June 5, 2021 (edited) Here are my favourites. Adventure: TNT: Evilution Icarus: Alien Vanguard Equinox (Pistol starts not recommended) Sverre Kvernmo's Echelon Osiris Puzzle: Jim Flynn maps (Titan Manor from Master Levels is especially great) Few maps in Icarus as well. Both: Eternal Doom Cleimos II (This is important) Edited June 5, 2021 by A.H. Sankhatayan 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Shepardus Posted June 5, 2021 Moonlight is another monsterless puzzle map by dobu gabu maru, the author of The Given (already mentioned here): 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Tony_Danza_the_boss Posted June 6, 2021 Can't go wrong with Epic and Epic 2 both are excellent adventure wads. 1 can be beaten in just one session as well highly recommend 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Lippeth Posted June 6, 2021 URE2020 is an excellent puzzle episode for Ultimate Doom. Puzzles are arguably as hard or harder than Hexen, at least for me. I recommend HMP for more space to think in, though UV isn't as crazy as a lot of other newer wads. Even turning off autorun is helpful in some maps. 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
Doomkid Posted June 6, 2021 You love Heretic, Hexen, Doom, Puzzles and Adventure? Couldn’t possibly sound more like Eternal Doom! 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
TheNoob_Gamer Posted June 6, 2021 Can't go wrong with this one - really feels like you are on an adventure with each map. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

MtPain27 is a great youtuber that does a series called "Dean of Doom". O recommend watching, but his Master Levels episode he hated on Titan Manor a lot. Best atmosphere and cool puzzles. No idea why he hated so much. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Haha, he really didn't like it :D It is an acquired taste, but I certainly acquired it. I find the level delightful. The new midi is also really cool. Edited June 6, 2021 by A.H. Pechudin Posted June 6, 2021 (edited) Not really puzzle, but A.L.T. is definitely not a combat-focused WAD, atmosphere and grand, weird architecture being the focus. Also Sacrament by the same authors. Sacrament especially has an entire huge map with like 50 monsters, 40 of them being locked behind a large secret. Another one is Revolution! by TVR. Each map is short, 50 monsters or less and very DoomCute. Edited June 6, 2021 by Pechudin 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

The new midi is also really cool. Speaking of midis, I got the Master Levels on Steam and never bothered playing them for the Doom - It program. Never liked it. However with no experience whatsoever, I grabbed a bunch of midis from games I like (Marathon, Daggerfall) and Windows 98 and made my own track list. It ended up really cool and it's how I associate the levels with music now. I left the first map with its orignal tune, and some reuse Doom 1 and 2 music, but it's mostly new stuff. Lots of fun to make. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

LadyMistDragon Posted June 6, 2021 Daedalus: The Alien Invasion is the sequel to Icarus, and is hub-based by Hexen. It's definitely more laid-back for the most part, even if the puzzles can sometimes be seriously obtuse.I once tried and failed to find a video walk through for this game, so good luck getting the secret weapons, lol. I loved the soundtrack though. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

I wonder how well it runs with modern versions of GZDoom. Even for its time, it had bugs, though any large project is bound to have those. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
