Chris Hansen Posted June 13, 2021 Hi all I finally finished converting all of Dario Casali's demos of his playthrough of The Plutonia Experiment and uploaded them to Youtube. I don't know how interesting it is since the demos have been around since 1996, but I thought I'd let you guys know in case someone who prefers YT wants to see how one of creators himself would finish the iwad. Like many people I find the iwad somewhat difficult. So I must have learned something that can help me next time I play it, right? Here's what the master taught me: The Super Shotgun is your best friend. Fire at everything that moves! Know where and when a trap springs. Foreknowledge is everything! If there's a door... camp it. Peak around a corner, shoot, retreat. Rinse and repeat until stuff you see is dead. Pick the right weapon for a given fight... eeh, I mean, before a trap springs. Know exactly what corner to lure a horde of monsters into so you can stand above them a kill them with splash damage from a rocket launcher. Infinite height rules! >>> Link to Youtube playlist <<< PS: I still absolutely love Plutonia! The Casalis sure as hell knew what they were doing! 15 Quote Share this post Link to post
GarrettChan Posted June 13, 2021 Nice. I actually like to watch these, but some of them desynced on PrBoom+, so it's good to have Youtube videos. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

These Youtube videos were also recorded in PrBoom+. Did you make sure to set the complevel to "Final Doom" instead of "Doom 1.9"? 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Uncle 80 Posted June 13, 2021 Nitpick : The video for Aztec glitches between 3:15 and 3:22. (only one I've watched so far as I was curious to see how he/they approached that damn blue key room which always kills me) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

out_of_service Posted June 13, 2021 I like how he methodically approaches Onslaught. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
BoxY Posted June 13, 2021 Really neat stuff, I knew the Casalis did some recordings for their maps but I didn't know a full pack existed and there's always something special about seeing a map through the eyes of its creator. Sometimes you even figure out why some feature of the map that seems unexplainable ended up the way it is. The only issue I have is that the GL lighting mode you used for capture seems to be way darker than the maps are in their native software mode but it's watchable so it's no big deal. I felt like the mouse movements in the demos looked a bit stiff at first but then I realised it was because in '96 almost everyone on the planet was still using a shitty beige ball mouse. :p He wasn't using the novert exe patch either. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

I'm not that good at Youtube, so I'm guessing I have to delete the old one instead of replacing the video. Sorry in advance if I screw it up further! :D 32 minutes ago, BoxY said: The only issue I have is that the GL lighting mode you used for capture seems to be way darker than the maps are in their native software mode Yeah, I can see that now after I did a comparison. Perhaps I made a mistake.. ohh well :) Spoiler 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

DoomGater Posted June 13, 2021 YT is great for lazy people. It is a shame, that it consumes so much energy. There is this urban legend, that YT alone requires 500 power plants. Don't know if this is right, But I guess playing an .lmp on demand is better for the planet :-) 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

I live in a relatively small city (by any international standards) but they'll soon be finished with a new Google server park. The first thing they did on the site a couple of years back? They built a very, very big power station on a nearby field! Then they started on the rest :D 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Final Doom has a behavior where teleporters do not set the z-coordinate of the player, which can cause the player to end up in the air or the ground. In addition, it carries over the behavior from Ultimate Doom where lost souls bounce off floors and ceilings. https://doomwiki.org/wiki/Versions_of_Doom_and_Doom_II#Final_Doom 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

CL4 has a weird teleporter behavior like Shepardus said, so it can cause monsters prematurely waking up, or you can't move for an extended period of time, so it can make the demos desync this way. An obvious one to see is when you see monsters teleporting in, the green ball is in the air instead of on top of the tele-pad. I watched his Map15 one to see, but it desynced after a few minutes. It's good to have a video so I can easily drag to the part I would like to see. (Didn't see so many people typed this. Hopefully it's not annoying to quote you again :P) 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
viti95 Posted June 14, 2021 I love how he has to unstuck the mouse ball in the MAP01 video (2:14). Imagine speedrunning in that era with those kind of mouses. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
