If you play through consecutively, save scum and watch Decino or Tatsurdcacocaco playing these maps on Youtube, you'll see that they have workable strategies which make them a bit less fearsome. They're not as hard as some Hell Revealed and most Sunder maps, for example. 6 hours ago, garudave said: No Guts No Glory is the only really spicy map, you kind of have to do it all at once. Demonic Hordes and Dark Dome are tough as nails but you can kind of finish them piecemeal with save scumming. If you've played Toxic Touch and Misri Halek though, you can probably hang up Alien Vendetta until you feel like tackling the hard maps. The last third of the megawad has some really good maps but the Malde maps do feel more special, if that makes sense. I will say, I'm on MAP19, and it's likely going to get into my top 10, provided I finish it. The maps are an absolute joyride and far ahead of their time, combat-wise. And yeah, I'm playing consecutively with heavy save-scumming. I'm not that good at Doom. I may drop down a skill level after Misri Halek, if I feel I really have to. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Some1NamedNate Posted June 16, 2021 I've been ping-ponging between each of the following: Part two of Doom 2 Unleashed; 2048 Unleashed; Perdition's Gate; Scythe; Scythe 2; Scythe X; and Freedoom: Phase 2. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

The imp horde is pure popcorn, and the big ass fight towards the end is iconic. AV is one of those megawads I know I'll return to periodically to absorb the atmosphere and test my skills on the harder maps. There's a depth to the level design that you can appreciate in different ways each time you come back, that's probably why it's so consistently recommended. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

I remember having fun on it. On topic, I'm playing Eviternity, and now Half Moon part 1 half moon 1 is a blast i first played it on zdaemon but i wanted to play it on single player to see how it really is and since its a comunity project i decided to pistol start every map and i recomend you to play this way the wad can get somewhat frustrating by the end levels but honestely i like all the weird experimentation it has in it though you might wanna run straight to the exit and ignore the mosters on some maps 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

I think JPCP will remain as that one WAD I keep coming back to, but I can see myself revisiting some of the better maps of Alien Vendetta later on as well. Really well-crafted combat experiences so far. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
BaileyTW Posted June 16, 2021 (edited) Currently playing through Valiant and just a little while ago beat map 31, Cyberwar 7734, uvmax (assuming I actually killed everything, arachnorbs muck up the kill count). Even recorded a demo of it, will just post it just to have it out there va31-3839.zip (it's complevel 11). One of my favorites of the wad so far and just in general, and also personal record for highest amount of monsters I've dealt with in a single map, thought thankfully the map is very forgiving. After Valiant I'll probably play Alien Vendetta. Currently going through this list of wads my skill progression to get better and I know some of the wads and they look interesting, might skip Hell Revealed or play Ancient Aliens concurrently with it as a palate cleanser because I have the worm in my brain which makes it so I need to saveless uvmax a level to be satisfied I beat it and that looks painful in Hell Revealed. Still right now I'm satisfied the progress I'm making. Not even 2 months ago I hadn't played any fan made wads so I was doubting if I'd be good enough to beat any of the wads but I've been doing well and Valiant was a big one I was looking forward to playing, absolutely gorgeous wad. Lucky_Edie Posted June 17, 2021 My plan is to demo basically everything posted in your other thread asking about the hardest maps people have played. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

I know exactly what's coming with it since I have seen 2 separate playthroughs of it, but i dunno. Just seems like one of those things I gotta do if I'm going down a list of hard wads. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

KeaganDunn Posted June 17, 2021 (edited) Play what you want to play, what interests you, and what you enjoy most. Brute-forcing your way through a list of hard wads is definitely not recommended. Nobody's telling you that you have to play certain things, either -- keep that in mind. :) This is coming from somebody who played Sunlust for his first Doom PWAD, having barely played Doom for a month at the time and just found it through a quick Google search for custom Doom WADs. It intrigued me, and its consistently-high production value sent me on a journey and got me where I am today with mapping and playing. The good thing about such WAD lists is that they give you loads of options to keep you busy, but you might also be interested in the more niche stuff such as Flotsam, Magnolia, Dimensions, etc. which are not often brought to attention unlike the classics. All I'm saying is, don't just brute-force your way through lists to get good at Doom, y'all. There's so many different maps of varying skill levels, gameplay styles, etc. that you really can't group them together in any way. Just do what interests you. idbeholdME Posted June 17, 2021 Finished Urania on UV-fast last week. Wonderfully hard MegaWAD. Now, I'm thinking about starting Blade of Agony soon. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

whybmonotacrab Posted June 17, 2021 Currently playing Deus Vult 2. Really digging it! So far it's been pretty manageable on HMP with Pistol Starts. Nothing too grueling. I've heard it gets rough soon though. I like how it bounces between kind of Slaughter and Scythe style maps. I was seriously surprised with the first map as it was nothing like what I expected. The changes to the arsenal are small but they add a lot to the style of the megawad, and my god are some of these levels gorgeous. I have some issues with the third map and the "Where Eagles Fly" map, in that navigating tight spaces with tons of plants in my face isn't super fun. Other than that it's a blast though. After that... maybe A2Rob's Donuts? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
The_SloVinator Posted June 17, 2021 1k lines community project 2 is the current one I'm playing. I have no plans for anything afterwards. Maybe I'll pick up a random game on Steam to play. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Soulless Posted June 17, 2021 Playing (when I can, not much free time lately) Tarnsman Projectile Hell, currently at E2M3 "Retrospective Kyoto". Next stuff will be Brigandine (Single map), and Stronghold. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
yakfak Posted June 17, 2021 im just replaying Enkeli's maps from Zones of Fear in my head while making my own stuff. really wanna make some in-fighting playgrounds, like ZOF but where you're mostly constrained to berserk fist and mostly cause havoc by dancing, just U-strafing around one thousand, three hundred and twelve imps and spiders and hell knights and stuff. City in the Clouds out of Hell Revealed's another thing I've played a million times and is still in my head, just platforms full of monsters and wandering mancubi, kinda bliss. I need more overstuffed but unoptimized maps like this to play, needs projectiles everywhere but to stay away from the linear adventure map feel; when its a bunch of choreographed challenges I find it both far harder and far less inspiring, somehow, wanna keep it pseudo casual and freeform! 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Side-O-Fries Posted June 18, 2021 I'm currently halfway through Struggle - Antaresian Legacy. Next wad will be Flotsam. Haven't made up my mind after that. Unfortunately my playing time has really taken a nosedive recently. I've got a lot going on and I'm prepping for a move. So I probably won't actually get around to starting Flotsam until sometime in the fall most likely. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
CherubCorps Posted June 18, 2021 Just made it to level 22 in Jenesis. Rumors are that it's very good, especially for being almost 10 years old now. Spoilers: The rumors are true. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
out_of_service Posted June 18, 2021 Currently on E1M7: Logic Core of Doom the Way id Did. Playing with Smooth Doom, Perkristians high resolution sound pack, and high quality PSX soundtrack. Gotta say I'm in heaven right now, er, ah, hell right now. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
MajorRawne Posted June 18, 2021 Beat STRAIN today. Well, I couldn't find the map 29 exit and don't play IOS maps, but whatever. Currently playing Kama Sutra, just beat map 9 and am now going to play the maps through from a pistol start rather than playing the megawad through. After this, maybe Coffee Break, then maybe Requiem. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Cinnamon Posted June 18, 2021 Been dipping my toes in Ancient Aliens. I'm very impressed so far, and it hits the sweetspot of difficulty where it's just a bit too difficult for me, but not unconquerable, so it's at a perfect level. ...At least four maps in. I've fiddled a few stages with both Plutonia 2 (on map 3 I think) and Back to Saturn X: Episode 1 (on map 6 I think) so it's not impossible I will play all of these three somewhat concurrently depending on whether I grow bored of one or not. :) 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Yumheart Posted June 18, 2021 (edited) I've been playing Arrival recently, got hooked on it from Jimmy's video. It's a really good set of maps so far, very densely populated, but not too hard. The music is also great. I'd recommend it. Edited June 18, 2021 by C3ntralPr0cessing 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Optimus Posted June 18, 2021 I started Sunlust as this and Sunder were very very trending in the communiity but never played them. At least Sunlust seems less slaughtermappy than Sunder. However, I am still getting frustrated in some levels, so the next time I am gonna play only oldschool casual shit. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

While I've only experienced it as an onlooker, some of these maps are pretty stupefying both in terms of visuals and resistance. I'm not sure how they stack up against an "average" slaughter map, though, as I have only seriously played a few of them.
