Hardest doom map/wad ever?

Recommended Posts

Chillax in singleplayer followed by

Okuplok saveless

Then new sunder maps

also Vhard.wad is another really hard one

speed17 has some really bullshit fights

I also made a fairly hard map for the speedmapping competition which I think might interest you if you like hard maps

Not the hardest but the gameplay is really ridiculous kind of like the maelstrom finale but with more ammo and health lol

That’s not true! They’re plagiarised to hell and back - but they aren’t garbage! [/splitting hairs]

Doom has lots of hard maps and wads.

For example, take Map 32 from Plutonia 2 "Go 4 It" which it's Map 32 from Plutonia 'Go 2 It" but way harder and more brutal. There's also Map 26 from Scythe named "Fear" which has like 400+ demons on it, there's no safe place in that map, whatever you do, more demons will appear and the harder it will get. Map 5 from Lunatic "Final Countdown" is also brutally hard, demons teleport non-stop and the further you go, the harder it gets

Since I metioned some maps, let's metion some wads as well. For example Sunder, a wad whose maps are brutal as shit. Scythe is also hard, the early maps are super easy but the early maps are brutal, hard and merciless. The worst of all is that in Scythe you are forced to pistol start them and 3 or 4 maps (don't remember) have no armor in them. Sigil, a wad made from Romero for Ultimate Doom, has the most darkest maps and if you're playing on Ultra-Violence, it's painful. And finally, Plutonia. Everybody knows Plutonia, right? It's known for it's traps and the way they use the Revenants, Chaingunners and Archviles in them. If you aren't prepared in Plutonia, those traps will be able to kill you. Plutonia doesn't joke, it means business. If you are new to Doom, don't play Plutonia 'til you get better on the game

would "abomination" be a more apt descriptor?

I haven't played too many hard ones but Scythe 2's later maps (22-30) were always a pain in the ass, even on ITYTD. Out of those, it's probably MAP27 or MAP29 in my opinion.

  • 1 year later...

The objectively hardest maps would be ones that are literally unwinnable - they have no exit, or kill you immediately when you start, or trap you in an inescapable state... lots of Terry WADs are like that.

Next would probably be that one map that someone made where it literally takes quadrillions of years of real - time waiting for the exit to become available. It's theoretically possible to win, but no one ever will, fairly.

After that, certain maps that would be classified as 'TAS-only'. In other words, maps that no human player could beat without using tools like save states, slow motion, rewinding, etc. I believe WADs like Tarachillax are on this level, at least I've never heard of anyone beating them without TAS.

When it comes to the hardest WADs that a human player could realistically beat (even if you allow using saves), you get stuff like Chillax, Okuplok, Profane Promiseland, Cosmogenesis, and other crazy slaughter maps.

If you want something that a human player could realistically beat without saves in a single sitting, the likes of some of the maps in Dimensions and Sunder would probably be the level of the hardest or so.

If you want something that you don't have to be a top tier Doomgod to have a decent chance of beating saveless, you can go to stuff like Sunlust, Scythe, Deus Vult II, Rush, etc.

Bloodstain, it doesn't start hard at all but if you've beaten the last 4 levels, you're a badder DOOMGUY than I.

i've beaten them. they're definitely hard - some of the fights in those final few maps seem luck-based tbh - but it's far from the hardest out there

I find questions like this kind of amusing. Like there's an objective scale by which hardness can be measured. *insert bad dirty joke here*

It felt like they were luck based. I only hit a wall I just couldn't demolish at MAP29 Ov Fire and the Void, I barely, on a thread, survived MAPs 27 and 28 but I was really banged up at the end of both and MAP29, being a penultimate bruiser, I couldn't survive those last two levels without going into it already critically injured and rather low on ammo. Sometime soonish, I'm gonna need to toughen back up for it and get my nasty redemption, it's an achievement I don't want to have been foiled by not getting.

"Skindustrial" series by @Spectre01 - very demanding macro-slaughter with a deviously crafted multi-part fights.
Recent "Cold Front" by @Thelokk also qualifies - the PE-imps fight and arch-vile slaughter near the end are some of the wildest scenarios I've ever seen in Doom.

DARKGATE.  I wanna see someone properly do that one.

Out of curiosity tried first two maps of this. Nothing hard, just very tedious with (often mandatory) searching for secrets in dumb wolf3d style. Ammo and health are in abundance (see wadwhat output file inside archive).

Maybe a full set of Darkgate UV Fast ILs.

- can become a challenge, but mostly of patience IMO.

I misread the topic as "hardest doom maps/wads you've beaten" and was expecting this to be a dick-measuring contest among players and was gonna brag about how I pistol-started all of Plutonia on Ultra-Violence, but nope!

I wouldn't even call something that's literally impossible to clear "hard" in the traditional sense since there's no win condition, therefore the player has experienced all there is to the terry map/wad, and by that metric sounds like the easiest thing ever! (though they can be hard on the eyes/ears/mind/soul)

Yep, from m3 I get the point about DARKGATE: it is just not optimized at all for pistol start. No way to go -fast IL on maps 3-5 (considering how cramped these levels are) and no way to finish m6-8 IL on any difficulty due complete lack of weapons, except some far placed berserks (which again can't save IL play because of lack of space).
