I have seen one of the topics where the design of Korax, and the heresiarch, are descussed.  However, I have a theory: what if the heresiarch IS Korax?  The heresiarch is Korax himself; the Chaos Sphere gave himthe power of omnipresence.  He can appear as many times as he wants.

Furthermore, the final "Korax" IS his mount; in the event that the REAL heresiarch Korax is killed, his mind is transfered to his sepent as a last resort.

Tell me what you think of this theory.

Heresiarch might have originally been intended as Korax (especially as he is shown at the end of Heretic), but I think they scrapped the idea because he would be too similar to D'Sparil (just another cultist boss). The one they landed on is much better IMO. Now the Serpent Riders are at least very different from each other. A normal humanoid, a beast and a house sized demon.

 

What bothers me personally the most, is that the supposedly "weakest" of the 3 Riders is by far the most difficult one to beat :P

I think from the Heresiarch cameo at the end of E3 of Heretic that its clear he was originally meant to be Korax, but that was scrapped. When you compare him side by side with D'Sparil as a bigger, meaner version then it makes sense. The Korax sprite is basically a Chaos Serpent with a different head anyway, so it's weird to call it a "serpent rider" when its kindof just the serpent. Maybe the Heresiarch was meant to be riding the extra evil looking serpent?

 

They're both not outstanding bosses IMO (in their vanilla form at least) but I prefer the Heresiarch overall. That Hexen Rebalance mod that someone here put out a while ago makes them both a lot more interesting, as well as improving the entire game actually.
