Imagine a second person Doom game or mod

Recommended Posts

This sounds like a premise for a joke/parody game but imagine if it has enough effort and quality, to make it a legitimate challenging experience.

* You still control Doomguy but not through his prespective.

* There could be some classic-styled autoaim, to make it easier to hit enemies.

* Jumping may be allowed, specially to let Doomguy jump over attacks or even stage hazards.

* Camera is always on the prespective of a random enemy you're always the closest too or at least the last/stronger ones.

* Most enemies are always facing a certain direction, so you could see the playable character/Doomguy, but there's some exceptions: Lost Soul, for example, could charge to a wall and miss you, then turn around at you, meaning you may want to let it hit you if you want to keep the camera on you.

* Killing it will lead the camera to leave their body and travel to another demon. (but camera could still somewhat focus on you)

* Even if a demon doesn't focus on you, there could still be some visual feedback/hints for your positions, like a tiny automap or arrows.

* Some demons still don't get to be POV, just so they're other obstacles/fodder near Doomguy, while the main demon watches.

* Demons have their own dedicated/stylized HUDs.

* Levels would probably have to be simplified to make this easier, even with certain and unique puzzles or hazards.

* Obligatory Dead Simple and Gotcha remakes.

* Some enemy types are already existing, traditional and recognizable, others could be new.

* PvP mod could involve a playable demon's POV being controllable.

* Doomguy also gets more skins and customization.

* He also gets visual damage with lower health and special visual effects with power ups.

I'm sure someone could think of more ideas to make this work.

Now i recall The Onion (i think) making a gag about Wolfenstein TNO having a "second person" mode where an old man in a chair describes actions that you can't see but you're still playing it.

Honestly that sounds quite irritating to me but I have a pretty short fuse. Given I have been gaming for 30+ years, there is a certain ingrained muscle memory that helps me adjust well to game types I am familiar with. What you describe sounds quite counter intuitive. I would be fighting against built in instincts too much to enjoy it.

If that floats your boat though great. We all like different things.

The closest I can think of a 2nd person shooter (well I dunno about shooter but you do shoot) was a game I played with my friend called Screen Cheat, which is a pvp game where everyone is invisible except for projectiles and certain weapons while they are shooting, but the game is splitscreen between everyone currently playing so to eliminate your opponent you screen cheat. This isn't perfectly 2nd person you still do have your first person view and it is useful to you playing just not in the same way.

Another game, which is still first person but fiddles with the 2nd person perspective as a mechanic is The Siren (or is it just Siren, I forget). PS2 horror game where there's a mechanic called sight-jacking where you stay still and you see and hear things through the perspective of someone in the direction you hold the analog stick while pressing some button. Of course you can't act during this and you still have your own perspective but that's a way 2nd person could be done just that this in no way works with the fast pace of doom I think.

Why not an RPG like the oldschool D&D SSI goldbox series? There should be a more authentic boardgame version of Doom & Doom2 on the market than the one I own.
