Doom dreams

This has been on my mind recently and I've become so curious that I need to ask, has anyone else had Doom dreams? Like dreams where they are playing or in the Doom games? It's happened to me 2 times. The first time, I was playing a classic doom level where I went around a large city map with some friends. The second time, I was alone in a giant arena map which was also in classic doom. They were fairly nice dreams but probably mean that Im playing this game too much. The dreams have actually given me some inspiration to create the levels in them!

I can recall 2 doom related dreams, when i was a small kid, way before i first tried the shareware, we used to have this game magazine that covered the SNES port with a guide that had the map layouts marking the progression, secrets and such. Since they used the automap style on those layout drawings (red lines and black backgrounds) it made an impression on me on how i thought the game looked (even if it had screenshots that looked nothing like that heh), also there was a screenshot (or sprite) of the cyberdemon displayed prominently in that guide which for a really young kid looked quite scary. So one time i had a dream where i was into what i imagined the game looked like, which was kinda like a wireframe type of map with red lines as the walls and such and the whole place was like a maze, as i explored the maze a door opened and low and behold there was the cyberdemon and i can't remember much else except that i was afraid of it

2nd dream was many years after, some years after doom 3 had been released and i was frustrated that i couldn't get a pc that could play the game. I had a dream where by some sort of miracle i managed to get a pc that could play the game, and it was incredibly scary and i couldn't play it due how afraid i was of it, but right behind me were a couple of friends teasing me on how i couldn't handle how scary the game was despite how much i would talk about wanting to play it... so yeah it wasn't exactly a pleasent dream lol

I had a dream that I was running. The place was vast and dark with everything basked in a dim red glow. A perpetual twilight. The walls that I could see were constructed from massive boulders roughly fitted together. The place had very strange geometry. That was the least of my worries. A horde of angry blood thirsty monsters was pursuing me. Only vaguely humanoid. More like demonic goat men with red skin and iron black horns. I’m now cornered! The things close in on me rending me with their claws. A vision of hell. The road to madness! DOOM.

So basically the archville maze but with a cyberdemon....that would be hell

I used to get nightmares about being chased through green marble mazes by Barons, and the gun would never work for some reason.

 

Another strange one I remember was where I was actually at my computer just playing the game, feeling the sudden urge to turn off my PC and it just wouldn't turn off. Weirdly distressing.

In february I had dream where I was making a doom map and when i was done I realized no sector could be over 250 in height and i had to scour the map and make corrections, finding errors everywhere. It was stressful.

I keep having a recurring dream about these three simple orthogonal rooms all linked together. It would be a terrible 1994 map if put to practice.

 

Probably spending too much time mapping. :P

In the only Doom related dream that I can actually remember I was playing some Doom wad while my family was screaming at me from another room. I just sat in my chair and ignored them like I was hypnotized or something.

 

I've heard that your dreams reflect your real life, but I hope that isn't the case for me.

This happens to me all the time, where I am the doom guy. It's always the same level as well, a Hell level of rock, lava and blood that progressively collapses into caves and tunnels filled with cyberdemons and archviles. I might actually try to make that map, only I haven't beaten it yet in the dream. Strangely the only game I ever dreamed of, probably because of how abstract the graphics of the game can be, I think this imprints the game more deeply into your subconscious.

Very similar to the arena one I mentioned. Very weird.

A couple years ago, my girlfriend encountered my "sleep talking" for the first time and it was due to a Doom dream.

 

See, when I sleep, I often speak very clearly...clear enough that it is sometimes hard to tell whether or not I'm sleeping or awake, so I'm told.  Anyway, I dreamed I had made a map and was letting someone playtest it...well, in my sleep, I apparently started to weakly laugh and proceeded to say, "You'd better be careful...this is where they get ya..."  She was less than entertained by this at the time.  I thought it was funny as hell when she told me about it the next morning.  To this day I still wake up to have her tell me the bizarre shit I say in my sleep.

I see a lot of different maps for Doom 1/2, Quake 1/2 and Stalker series in my dreams, wherein i run in them myself with the gun (like i am the game character) and sometimes wherein i am anime/manga character. I usually like these dreams.

Weird, the demons in my dreams are usually kind and no one is aggressive towards me. 

One day I had a dream about archvile who resurrect flowers, lots of yellow flowers. He used up so much energy that he fell down dead. Why did he do this? I don`t know. I felt sorry for him. There was also a dream in which a cyberdemon asked me to get a tattoo on his entire left arm. And some other meaningless dreams, the details of which I do not remember.

Ok, I'm coming here to post about a dream I had last night. It's my first Doom related dream too.

 

Basically, I was playing a map and commentating about it, the level design and stuff like that. I was in a room where a big wall opened up, revealing a spider mastermind. I got scared like anyone who'd see one and didn't have a BFG, and ran straight out to the exit.

 

I went back to the level again for some reason and when I got to that part again (Basically the only spot on the map), I was a bit late to run to the exit, and noticed that the Spider demon wasn't attacking me and couldn't really move from where he first stood. I then went next to him. And from there I can't remember what specifically triggered this thought but apparently I must've found some sort of smart use of teaching the player stuff in the level design, and praised Sandy Petersen for coming up with such a cool thing I guess. At least I know who made the map now.

 

Afterward, I had the usual dreams until the Doom one came back, but there was no Spider Mastermind and more walls opened up, revealing hordes of Hectebus monsters, black Bruiser Demon-like Barons of some sort, Arachnotrons, and some sort of entirely new monster that shot groups of small green fireballs. I strafed around shooting at them with the Rocket Launcher and it just ended there, back to regular nuero-television programming.

I had a dream where Doomguy had a Mega Bloks figure and it was even packed alongside a Master Chief one. (Since Halo had that actually)

It also came with an original ship design that was demonic and had a classic Cacodemon in it, while Doomguy was still using his Eternal Praetor suit.

And there were a bunch of other Doom merch too like a bubble head thing where the Praetor helmet was on the body of a buff boxing dude, like it was based on a non existing skin and a collectable.

I dreamed about playing a small city map that had a layout similar to Blood E3M1, I went inside a marble building, went up to the second floor and then jumped into another marble building through a hole, then I grabbed a shotgun and killed a few Zombiemen, went up in the building and I think there was a Gargoyle from Blood? Anyways I fought the enemy, dodged its fire projectiles and found an exit switch at the end of the building's room, exited the map.

Probably was switching to playing Blood after playing so much Doom. I don't have a lot of dreams related to media, the only ones I remember was this and a one where I was a semi-fictional version of myself in a Nickelodeon cartoon nonexistant episode (the cartoon was Spongebob Squarepants? I don't remember).

I regularly see dreams of myself as Doomguy, roaming around Doom levels generated randomly by my brain.

My dreams aren't usually very connected to my waking reality. Among the few times they are, however, dreaming about my latest obsession is fairly standard, albeit it's just part of the dreamscape's reality, not a game. This also includes DOOM, of course.

I had a dream about a tiny wooden house with wood textures from the game Blood. The house was surrounded by a wooden fence.

I remember seeing slopes in the backyard behind the fence.

 

I' trying to make a map based on that dream, but i really suck at it. I don't really know if it was a dream, but i see the same image when im listening to music or something. It's just so familiar.

 

Can anyone make a map based on that dream? I would really appreciate it. I can draw the house on paper for you guys.

This is why you need to study mapping. Rave, rinse and repeat.

 

Dont just ask others, its far more rewarding to do it yourself.

Just had one last night and woke up seeing this thread haha. Stupid story of it below.

Basically, a Doom livestream of a person A playtesting a map of a mapper B (won't name them specifically but they exists). B made a somewhat slaughterish and giant open map with an orange sky texture, very UDMF, had a giant 3D modelled cyberdemon at the end and a platforming sections somewhere, with sorta misaligned flats. A was talking with B the whole time.

The thing is that in actuality B (and possibly A too) didn't like UDMF very much and never mapped in UDMF ever before, they always seemed like Boom/MBF21 enthusiasts.

I had a dream that was essentially a reality TV show/documentary about John Romero making Sigil.  Except instead of a Doom wad that Romero was making, Sigil was a baby elephant that Romero had to raise.  So he was just in his house hanging out with a baby elephant named Sigil.  The end of the dream was Romero opening the door of his home and gently scooting the somewhat-grown elephant out into suburbia, saying, "Goodbye, Sigil!  Be good!"  I have no idea why I dreamed this.

I remember having a dream about 15 years ago, when i was like 8 or 9 years old. This was when my sister used to play it, and when I was terrified of it. In the dream, my sister and I were in some sort of weird version of E1M5. That level had stuck out to me as a kid from the amount of nukage in the level. The only thing I remember from the dream is that while we were walking around, we got attacked by some imps. My sister took them out, but then she fell into the nukage and died, and I screamed out her name as I saw it happen. Apparently I actually yelled out her name in real life as well, which woke her up cause we used to sleep in the same room. I can't imagine how scared she would've been to hear me yell out her name like that while I was sleeping lol.
