We feel that the distribution of new levels that work with the shareware version of DOOM will lessen a potential user's incentive to purchase the registered version. If you would like to work with modified levels of DOOM, we encourage you to purchase the registered version of the game." In other words, it seems like some small modifications to the engine to simply allow it to run (no actual changes to the game at all) wouldn't be going against the requests of the included readme. Of course, this is likely very out of date according to the current owners of id, but I feel like the whole thing is much ado about nothing (at least, I hope it is). That has nothing to do with bundling the shareware IWAD, it's basically "Do not mod the shareware version's levels, and do not make new levels that could run in the shareware version." The latter is moot since they added an IWAD check in Version 1.4, I think (and before this some early PWADs would purposely include Things that would bomb out on shareware, like the Dead Lost Soul). The former, I think pretty much every relatively modern level editor will detect the shareware IWAD and refuse to mod them to some greater or lesser extent. So since it's the original shareware IWAD being distributed, it should be just fine. Edited July 10, 2021 by Dark Pulse 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
