Loren Posted July 9, 2021 I only legally own DOOM 1 and 2's wad files. I can't use them both because the install process to play my wad would be more complicated. So I was wondering, which wad file should I use for mapping? I like Doom 1's textures the most but Doom 2 has a wider choice of enemies, objects, and of course, it has the super shotgun. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
spineapple tea Posted July 9, 2021 Most wads are made using Doom 2's assets. If you like Doom 1's textures, you can use a program like Slade to add them to the map you're making while still being able to use Doom 2's monsters and weapons. If you make a map using Doom 1 as an iwad, make sure to say so when releasing it. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Silhouette 03 Posted July 9, 2021 It depends on what you want to make really. I go with Doom 2 as iwad due to being able to structure more encounters with the extended bestiary, as well as having more textures. You can also use fan-made texture sets if you want. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Kappes Buur Posted July 9, 2021 (edited) There is nothing wrong with using the original textures, but, after 27 years they look all too familiar. This is where fan-made texturepacks come in. These can make all the difference for a map to look fresh and sparkly, it is not difficult to use them in your map. But if you want to stick with the original textures then you can use Doom Textures for Doom II to have both. Edited July 9, 2021 by Kappes Buur 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

People have gotten away with it but it shouldn't be encouraged going forward. However, you can certainly find replacements that are pretty similar. Plus there's a bunch of unused id resources that might help fill the gap for you: 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Nimoy Posted July 10, 2021 Just use the IWAD, I grabbed the one used for DOSBox from Steam. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
