An IWAD must contain all the assets required for the game to run: not just maps, but sprites, textures, sounds, graphics, everything. Romero doesn't have the rights to distribute Doom assets, so he'd have to make his own versions of all the assets if he wanted to release Sigil as an IWAD. And if he did that, there wouldn't be any Doom left in it, so it couldn't be "canon" anyway as it would be a different game than Doom. The only way this could ever be released as an IWAD and considered an official part of the game would be if Bethesda themselves released it bundled into the Doom.wad commercial IWAD along with the other episodes, and updated the .exe to handle five episodes for Doom 1. And given the official modern port already includes it as a free add-on, they have absolutely no incentive to do that. 6 Quote Share this post Link to post

I understand it, they put new demons in doom 2016 2020 and doom3, if John Romero changed everything with the excuse that "it is the deepest part of hell, everything changes down there" it would seem like a good idea and I would take it as canon, even though actually Sigil for what I know is already canon for many, it would only have been interesting if it was a separate iwad and not an extra file for doom ultimate Edited July 19, 2021 by doomguykiller69 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

That compat.wad is simply for source ports that cannot run the Sigil maps. It's nothing to do with Romero "making Doom his own game".
