[Remaster WIP] Newdoom Community Project

I took a hiatus and then ended up working on my Vilecore Remaster for a bit. Now I'm back and have Mystic's map02 almost done. It was a challenge to take what is a deathmatch style of design and make it more playable in singleplayer, especially the lab areas with the funky colored lights. Every time I played the map I was totally lost... so I set about making the four colored zones different from one another. The one switch that let you back into the sewers was so hard to find even when knowing it was there somewhere was confuzzling. I turned some doors into doorways (less clicking on shit), gave lifts switches (more clicking on shit), made steps, added monster closets, cut in some windows, added more varied critters, added keys that unlocks the central area which used to be a secret and reduced the number of lights plastered overall. Added a couple signs that hopefully help clue player in how to proceed. Redesigned the fugly crate textures I had made (they've been fixed for awhile now). Made a few more rooms to the sewers, because it needed it.

Got some work done this morning to Iori's map06. Just doing some texture work on here. Made new marble, new wood door, aligned marble brick textures and made a vine texture that matches GSTVINE1 so it extends and appears to have hanging ends of the vine in question.

Nice, I really like those changed flats in map02. And iori's map is one of my all time favorite maps of course so it's hard to improve perfection :P

Yes, iori's map is pretty cool and I really like his map11 as well. Thankfully both of those maps are now done. :D

 

So I moved on to map14, which I did some work to previously. Ninja's map is gettin a new lick of paint. :D I revised the brick textures I made long ago and then made a black version. So far so good. ;)

Great work, MAP14 definitely could have used the improved look. Do you know who made the sky textures, btw? SKY1 is still my favorite doom sky texture after all these years.

Thanks. iori made the sky textures. The red sky, which was taken from the banner on top of the Newdoom site... I think Exl turned that one into the red sky.

 

Finished the remaster of Ninja_of_Doom's Map14: Jail Break. Moved on to Mystic's, City of Lost Souls. Made sidewalks, light poles, curbs, and more interiors for sure, etc...

Great job as usual, City of Lost Souls is another immensely memorable map, I'm curious to see how you'll rework the indoor sections.

Hey, I had to take another break for awhile but I'm back and fired up!

 

The project is delayed a bit and I wanted to have more done by now, but that's the way it goes.

Oh man I'm happy to see this getting a remaster. :D This is one of my favorite megawads (even though I had to download a fixed version floating around to keep from getting stuck on map 02 :P).

 

Hope you've been doing well, Doom_Dude. :) I miss the old New Doom days.

Map02 is now less confusing I hope. lol

 

I miss Newdoom too sometimes. Thankfully we have Doomworld to infest and there's discord.

 

Still not sure where Pumpkinsmasher is.

Doing better than I was a few years ago around this time but I'm still alive and kicking. Sometimes with screaming. :P

 

Been digging these screenshots of the updates. Definitely eager to give this a spin when it's available. :D

I'm almost done with map 28.

 

I forgot whether I had found DoomedAce or not. So I looked through messages, this thread and email and came to the conclusion I never did get in contact with him. Not sure how I forgot that. My only email to DoomedAce was never answered. I checked Facebook for a Doomedace (Coen G. Blazer), but there's a clothing group and one fella that isn't active. Trying to find DoomedAce and PumpkinSmasher if I can. Also Nuxius seems to have gone silent and Frades is kinda on the missing list as well. Hmmm.

 

[edit] Tried emailing Pumpkin and DoomedAce again. Hopefully somebody notices....

Oh yeah!

 

Got email contact from Pumpkin Smasher! He's not able to edit his two maps, but gave me permission to tweak them myself.. So that's good news!

Good for you. NewDoom CP is a classic in my book, up there with the first two Community chest wads as some of my favorite 2000s wads. Really excited to see the love being given to an old classic by one of its original contributors. Ever consider getting some of the many talented Doomworld musicians together and getting a bespoke soundtrack for the wad?

 

Side note, still love some of the textures in this wad. Especially the skies. Looking forward to your completed work!

We'll be getting together a music set for sure. Dunno about about a bespoke soundtrack at this point.

 

Some of the old textures got reworked, especially ones I made like the crates.

It's not something that is on my to do list at this point. I didn't think to ask him about that and my follow up email hasn't been answered yet.

 

The good news is that I have both of the Pumpkin Smasher maps almost done. At this point, It looks like we'll be aiming at a early 2023 release.

It wouldn't take all that long to retexture Frades' map though since it's quite short. Nuxius, idk. everyone reaches the age where they don't have time for projects participated in 15 years ago maybe

Completed the visual and monster placement rework a little earlier than expected. Just ammo and health re-balance left to do. Here's a set of before-and-afters showing the biggest changes. The last one is especially hilarious. None of the end results match modern day stuff as they're still built on top of the ideas and layout "bones" of the old map, but hopefully they're worthy of the remaster label.

I sadly haven't been able to lure DooMGoaT out of mapping retirement.  He keeps pretty busy these days and doesn't have time for it.  But I'm in regular contact with them and they've given me the thumbs up to tweak their map:

I've got a decent amount of time off in Nov/Dec, so hoping to have it finished by end of year.

Wish this treatment would happen to lots of other old classic wads out there :p

 

On the subject of this wad, @Doom_Dude do you have the xINFO lumps for this all sorted out? I was going to write a set up for the original release in the past, and it likely would automatically fit this remaster too.
