Where to begin

Recommended Posts

I will start by admitting it. I am a shameless cheater. When I grew up, I played Doom 1 and 2 on the easiest setting, cheated and had fun. But last year I decided to revisit the games and complete them both on UV. I did, except E4M1, because well.. it's E4M1.

How did I complete them? With GZdoom, so mouselook enabled. Does that still make me a cheater? you decide, I still had a fun time. After that I completed:

Going Down on HMP

Doom 2 the way ID did it on UV
Doom 1 the way ID did it on UV
Sunlust with cheats
Ancient Aliens with cheats

Okuplok with cheats (I tried this on UV, and I just can't do it)

But now I want to return to my streak of UV runs for easier megawads. I know Sunlust and Eviternity are on the higher scale of difficulty after watching Decino play through them, so I am looking for a good stepping stone after The way 1 and 2 on UV. I don't really feel like playing through Going Down for the 4th time, regardless of how amazing Cyriak made that thing.

Does anyone have any good suggestions? Something that just sink my teeth into but not wall smashing insane?

Addition #1: I looked at the caco awards thing, but even there I suck at differentiating the difficulties

give a try to scythe it starts easy but it gets preety hard by the end i think it is a good place for new doomers to start

i also recommend you to give a try to pirate doom it is easy for the most part but it has an amazing sense of adventure if thats your sort of thing

Completely forgot :) Pirate Doom I also completed, and loved even though the TNT weapon absolutely broke the game haha!

I'll give Scythe a shot

This is a great thread for finding wads of a more accessible difficulty:

I made a couple wads called Rowdy Rudy’s Revenge and Ray Mohawk that people have told me are still fun but nice and easy on HMP or HNTR. Maybe you’ll enjoy em!

For harder wads, I would recommend giving the full scale of difficulty settings a try. So for Sunlust/Ancient Aliens/Eviternity for example, you could try it on HNTR or ITYTD

*Note: all difficulty numbers are for reference only. As a reference point for my self, Plutonia is 1.0.

TNT: Revilution (1.6)

Cydonia (1.4)

Japanese Community Project (1.3)

Syringe (1.4)

Doom 2 in Spain Only (1.2)

Arrival (1.4)

Switcheroom 2 (1.5 *There are some unbalanced map in the beta, maybe they are changed so it could be lower)

These are all slightly harder than Plutonia in my personal difficulty assessments, but it seems you haven't played Plutonia, so well, play Plutonia.

I would recommend you check out Final Doom if you haven't yet.  TNT is about as difficult as Doom II.  Plutonia is a significant step up in difficulty but it's kind of a natural progression from the stuff you've played already.  Aside from that, the thread linked above about skill progression has been my guide lately.

I can also thoroughly recommend TNT Revilution, the community sequel to TNT.  It has a great balance of visuals and challenging gameplay.  None of the levels get out of control but they are as demanding or a little more demanding than Plutonia's levels.  It's a fun set of maps and my favorite that I've played through so far.

First off, you shouldn't beat yourself up for cheating, these days there are a lot of players that play 100% UV pistol start no save everything and as a new player you shouldn't try to mimic that stuff, you would probably have a lot more fun saving than torturing youself playing through a whole level again and again, so savescum, IDKFA, mouse-look as much as you want, the important thing is that you have fun :)

Now with that out of the way one WAD that I would recommend is Heartland, I know it's not a megawad but I just played through it and had a blast

Can't go wrong in trying out Plutonia and TNT if you can get em. Also Scythe, megawad that's split in 3 tiers of difficulty (5 if you count the last map being way way harder than the rest of it). First 10 maps are Doom 1 and 2 difficulty, 2nd 10 are TNT-ish difficulty, and the rest are a bit above that. The good thing about Scythe is it does have difficulties other than ultra-violence in mind. Was my first fan made was outside of the 4 iwads and I think it was good start as far as difficulty goes (not counting the last map)

Please use difficulty settings, they exist for a reason, if you don't wish to continue using cheats.

I would say Eviternity has a pretty nice and even ramp-up as far as megawads go.
