Favorite atmospheric midi from a doom megawad. Mine is Grandfather Clocktower.

Esselfortium's "Waiting" from BTSX is so damn good. Really good use of MIDI sounds to imitate train sounds, and just a great progression too.

Some to look out for are the aforementioned Waiting by Esselfortium from BTSX1, as well as its followup, Mystproj from BTSX2. Jimmy's BTSX1 song The Cry is also great. Ionian Isolation is great, but Eris's other atmosphere-building midi from that wad, Hell's Furnace, deserves some love too. And, of course, this thread would be incomplete without a mention of The Mucus Flow's theme.

They weren't originally written for Doom, but Scythe 2 MAP24 wouldn't be what it is without Dungeon 21 from Daggerfall, nor would MAP28 of Sunlust without Gate of the Ancients from Stonekeep.

Two Revilution tracks on here! Nice! I posted some details about that TNTR Map 12 midi in a few places recently.

Death's Bells is definitely my choice here though. Ever since I first heard it in Doom95 off a Final Doom CD I bought from a secondhand store, ive been in love with it, although no midi device in ports has ever recreated the sound I remember so fondly.

Frozen Wilderness from Eviternity also deserves a mention; that one was a track originally made for Revilution's planned ice map, and was the result of me asking Eris for something 'cold-sounding', something atmospheric with a haunting charm to it. The trick turned out to be 'slow the whole track down', a suggestion my musically-inclined brother suggested.

I have two, both from Ultimate Doom:

  • Demons on the Prey - It rocks as a song and it's pretty spooky but catchy on that regard as well.
  • Sinister - It's really the only song that evokes fear and actual suspense and makes me scared to turn the corner (unlike Suspense ironically).

I'm going to say "Plasma" from DN3D or "Gate of the ancients" from stone keep. Sure they weren't designed specifically for doom but they sure as hell change a maps aesthetic. Midis that were made with doom in mind would be "Agony Rhapsody", "Killing spirit", and "They're going to get you" to name off a few.

SNES Doom's Nobody told me about Id, it's waay creepier than the original and IMO makes the cyberdemon fight a lot more tense than it already is, the same goes for Sinister, Donna to the rescue, and especially The Demons from Adrian's Pen, it gives Refinery a completely different atmosphere

That song from Toxic touch in AV. No idea what it's called.

Just realised (well, googled) the fact that it's "plasma" from duke 3d.

The Mucus Flow by B.P.R.D. and Waiting by esselfortium. not just great atmospheric pieces, but they take wonderful advantage of the most-commonly-used SC-55 derived MSGS wavetable sound set.

Where are "They're Going to Get You" (D_E2M4) and D_VICTORY from D1? Those two are some of my favourites. Pluvious, by Bucket, from the Plutonia midi pack is another great one, and I'm very partial to Jimmy's Quell The Beast. I also really like Cold Subtleness from Evilution, damn creepy if you ask me.

Now that would be a looong list. Here are some of the first that come to mind.

Icarus Map23 music - by Jonathan El-Bizri

Nuts 3 Map01 music -  by B.P.R.D

Horizon (TNT: Evilution), Slow Evil I and II, Classic Evil (Icarus: Alien Vanguard) by Tom Mustaine - These sound kinda similar actually. TM made some great music.

Death March, Hell's Bells and about a dozen others (Eternal Doom) - by Rich Nagel

How come nobody mentioned "Fight the Logic If You Can" from AV, Misri Halek?

Pretty much all the music in Equinox.

It's hard to say as the charts are not enough (covering only songs from 1-2 wads)

I did remember I liked some TNT Evilution music quite in that atmosphere sense and I found map04, map06 and map31

And there could be more, but ripped from other games (like Blood/Duke3d) in classic WADs. I think of Alien Vendetta (map20 and map10)

Waiting for Romero to Play from Doom 2 and Bucket's Lair of the Bitchmaker from Mid the Way id Did, is one of my favorite ones, along with some Doom E2 soundtrack like They're Going to get You (does that track atmospheric?) and Waltz of the Demons.

Oh, and a honorable mention to Alien Forest and The Demons Serenade from Ancient Aliens

MM1: Scary 1 provides the proper marching beat to ambience and atmosphere
MM2: Backroad Wanderer and Into the Fray were surprisingly not mentioned yet.

Icarus: HEART OF THE HIVE FOR THE WIN

BTSX: Nanonucleonic Cyborg Summoning. If you need an explanation, you don't need an explanation.

Hellcore: All the Simon Judd MIDIs fit

Sunlust: MAP03 has an excellent Secret of Evermore MIDI. You can take almost any song from that game and make it worth it into a Doom wad.

Requiem: Under Death and Lamneth's Ground need mention

Plutonia 2: Outpost of Destiny is a surprising standout, almost all the songs fill the atmosphere well.

PRCP: Dread is cinematic, JRPGy, adventurous, and atmospheric all at once.

Jenesis: Voyage and Sunset on Babylon

WOS: Frozen Mysteries and Waltz of the Dead are the standouts, both back to back too.

AA: Alien Forest is EXCELLENT

MAP20 from the upcoming TNT Evilution MIDI Pack, as well as MAP01 from the NRFTL MIDI Pack - decino seems to have a talent for this and I hope he keeps making MIDIs.

Speaking of MIDI packs, may I compliment Xulgonoth on E2M6 of the Ultimate MIDI Pack - an absolutely paranoia-inducing track that fits Halls of the Damned perfectly.

Most of the Ancient Aliens soundtrack, can't pick a favorite there.

Lee Jackson's contributions to the Duke Nukem soundtrack, including Plasma, but they're all great.

Alien Vendetta MAP20, the music is a lot of what makes Misri Halek what it is.

The Mucus Flow BGM, a very strange and haunting track.

Those are some really good choices. I think I'll go with PL2's "End is Nigh". MtPain probably described it best when he called it the definition of evil.
Sunlust's midified PSXDoom soundtrack in God Machine is also great.
