NoahRules Posted July 30, 2021 Title says it all. I wanna know what everyone thinks of playing Doom online modded or not Personally I've played a bit and I'm not very good at it but I still think its fun (wish there was more vanilla servers though) Also if you wanna know how to download/play Doom Online just watch this video: 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
roadworx Posted July 30, 2021 from what i've played, i've enjoyed it quite a bit. though, i feel like there need to be a certain amount of players (the specific number depends on the map) for it to be really fun. otherwise it can either be plain boring or just a chaotic mess and i agree - there really does need to be more vanilla servers. greenwar and dwango are fun af 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
BaileyTW Posted July 30, 2021 Been wanting to try it out for a while but like my internet connection (specifically my laptop's ability to process that connection) is too garbage for me to consider it unfortunately. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Doomkid Posted July 30, 2021 As the moderator of the multiplayer section and the guy who posted the very tutorial you linked, this may come as a shock... ...but I think it’s pretty damn fun c: Also you can find very vanilla-esque servers on Doomshack! If there’s a particular wad you want me host on Zand or ZDaemon let me know. (Odamex cluster is temporarily in disrepair.. we have to upgrade the entirety of Doomshack for the latest versions to run so we’ve been putting it off lol) 13 Quote Share this post Link to post

RonnieJamesDiner Posted July 30, 2021 I've never actually played Doom online, but I love watching the Hellforge's BFG Spam Squad do their thing (usually through Bridgeburner's twitch stream). Always a ton of fun, even just to watch. And they look/sound like they're having a blast (even when they're grumbling, and screaming, and calling each other a chorus of words I'll avoid using here). 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Lippeth Posted July 30, 2021 Any time I've played online it's been memorable and worth setting up every port you can so you can just drop into any game at a moment's notice without fiddling with settings while you're playing. I've never played co-op online and that's something that sounds fun, with microphones and all that. Hexen co-op sounds especially fun, but even Doom would be neat. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
ketmar Posted July 30, 2021 i don't like DM multiplayer at all. in any game, including Doom. it is just boring for me: running at the same (usually quite small) map in circles, trying to kill other players doing the same... meh. coop may be much funnier, but there are not alot maps that really require cooperation, and finding people to play good coop sessions is not easy too (it's harder than some random DM session with a random persons). SP FTW! 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Murdoch Posted July 30, 2021 Not a fan. Not because it's not good, like almost all other multiplayer games it doesn't appeal. I had a LAN game once with a guy like 25 years ago. That's it. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Lippeth Posted July 30, 2021 In most cases I'm totally with you @ketmar. Games like CoD and WoW really turned me off of playing online games with strangers. I almost turned it around with the Vermintide games but ended up feeling the same way. If you are lucky enough to play online with folks you know or even half know, it can be really fun. Though I've only been fortunate enough to do that a hand full of times. One time I remember browsing Doom death match servers and randomly found one very formidable and patient player, and we must've played over 30 rounds one on one. I'm by no means bad at multiplayer Doom but I only killed them a few times and actually got better because of them. It felt like walking into a dojo and getting hard lessons from the sensei. I don't know why but that was very memorable. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Decay Posted July 30, 2021 Like most multiplayer games, it's fun with people you know/are friends with, shitty with people you don't know/aren't friends with. Doom online is definitely not limited to DM, there are plenty of implemented game modes plus countless different kinds of ACS games. Gather up some friends and give it a go some time. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

xX_Lol6_Xx Posted July 30, 2021 I think it's quite good, both client/server and LAN, my multiplayer port of choice is Odamex since I want vanilla behavior and it runs surprisingly very good on my garbage computer, I have played with my brother a lot the original Scythe, Scythe 2, FreeDoom1 , TNT: Evilution and FreeDM, and it was a blast! 1 hour ago, Doomkid said: Odamex cluster is temporarily in disrepair.. we have to upgrade the entirety of Doomshack for the latest versions to run so we’ve been putting it off lol So that's why I couldn't get in... 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
silentzorah Posted July 30, 2021 I've played a handful of times online, and it's just not for me. Not gonna knock people who enjoy it. I'll just stick to single player, there's plenty of content out there for me. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

TheMagicMushroomMan Posted July 30, 2021 (edited) If I could easily find a populated DM server with vanilla-ish gameplay, I'd love it. Not a fan of MMDeathmatch or Chillax shit or zombies or "wow look how craaaaaazy this is!" kind of stuff. Also wifi here sucks. But I'll use mobile data if I find something worth playing. Obsidian Plague Posted July 30, 2021 literally all of the servers on doomseeker are either MM8BDM or "Complex Brutal Gigafart per gigashit Clusterfuck Doom Co-Op" and anything that isn't is just "overpowered team that can only use melee vs team that has access to guns" like hot damn i just want to shoot some dudes not play the hidden source(tm) why are you people making it this complicated to find a normal goddamn server where i can just frag some dudes 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Teo Slayer Posted July 30, 2021 It's super fun going with my friends killing demons. Is like I have my own squad 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Hawk of The Crystals Posted July 30, 2021 I enjoy playing multiplayer, primarily with friends in a discord server. Mainly since public servers get too chaotic, and well, y'know? It's troubling sometimes. Vanilla co-op or deathmatch is what I usually play, so no experience with weird janky custom stuff for me. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Skronkidonk Posted July 30, 2021 I have tons of fun doing it. I try to play it with friends as much as I can! I have a absolute blast messing around in Alien Vendetta or Kama Sutra and talking to friends. I recommend it to people who haven't tried it. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
printz Posted July 30, 2021 I played Zandronum a few years ago and it was awesome. The gameplay was survival coop, it was on the ultra-hard (but unfortunately plagiarism-made) megawad Chillax, which can't really be played solo. It was awesome because that was when I felt I had teamwork. People were talking and planning how to tackle the next challenge. I was also doing my part. The only big problem out of all was the rocket launcher... Even though friendly fire was disabled, you would still kill yourself by your rockets, and anyone careless popping into your face made rocket launchers -- otherwise quite necessary -- a total death and balance killer. I retried Zandronum recently, but faced the following impediments unfortunately: Lousy internet connection making most games unplayable (I think it got better now). All servers were using stupid gameplay mods (Complex Doom, Brutal Doom) going away from the Doom gameplay I want. Mostly Deathmatch games. I see that people think that multiplayer means PvP (because monsters suck and are too easy already), but you can always make overly difficult PvE (coop) maps that can't be tackled solo, even in vanilla! Simple PvE maps, usually solved. I really need a friend (cue Black...) or Doom guild or group made of people I know from this community... There's this multiplayer forum and there are some invite-only Discord servers I was lucky to be invited in... they also have #multiplayer... hopefully people really gather up there to play, instead of merely talking about it... Higher chances not to hit stupid mods or ungraceful plagiarism like Chillax. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Kinsie Posted July 30, 2021 I feel like I'd be more interested in online Classic Doom if there were more mapsets where the SSG was either rare or absent. It drowns out pretty much any other weapon to an even greater extent than in single-player, especially in CTF which just becomes a melee-range race between two teams to jump on each other's double-barrelled bayonets the least. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Mystic 256 Posted July 30, 2021 Playing Doom Online (Zdaemon, Zandronum, Odamex) is pretty fun, whether it be Coop, Survival, Deathmatch, CTF, Invasion, and more I especially like Zandronum's (Originally from Skulltag) Invasion Mode though, Its a really good gamemode to play multiplayer I just wish more people Doom Online so I had people to play with >< also I kinda wish there was more variety in servers (a lot of the active servers seem pretty similar often) I kinda think they should also add some form of online multiplayer to official unity port that works via friend invites or something, for crossplay and such 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
printz Posted July 30, 2021 (edited) Why do I keep seeing classic DeathMatch demos and such? What's the appeal in having no item respawning and just the guns providing 5x (or was it 10x) ammo? Didn't id invent altdeath (DeathMatch v2.0) for a reason? To move ahead with the gameplay and offer more variety. Edited July 30, 2021 by printz 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Somniac Posted July 30, 2021 (edited) I'm pretty regularly on Zandronum playing in survival servers running LCA these days. I did a lot of Complex Doom invasion then last year but I'm a bit burnt out on it. The lack of straight up classic DM or co op servers is a bit frustrating not gonna lie. Also I wish Armageddon Invasion would make a comeback, that was my favourite in the Skulltag days. Edited July 30, 2021 by VisionThing 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Doom_Dude Posted July 30, 2021 I'm not much for DM anymore. I always preferred the SP gameplay. Back in the early 2000's I had a server and I made three deathmatch levels, Templecore, Chasmcore and Lavapit temple. The maps never did get uploaded to /idgames. When I started to play Heretic II (pronounced Hairy Tick II) with online friends in the mid 2000's I made a version of Templecore, which turned out pretty well. I may have to get the olde maps out and spruce them up a bit and release them sometime. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

SP FTW! Bah.. the Doom monsters have yet to come up with a new tactic. Just zig zag and fireball, zig zag and fireball, rinse and repeat.. An opponent that can think and strategise, one who can see the tactics I go for and change theirs accordingly - now that is a fun challenge! As for the maps being small/repetitive - well, a DM shouldn’t last more than 5 minutes generally speaking, so if you load up a DM Megawad, that’s 30 individual 5 minute sessions before you have to ever play in the same arena twice. And most DM arenas made after 1995 tend to look anywhere between decent and incredible (if you play the top tier stuff). I know, I know - Doom love takes many forms... But I’m the sort who likes my enemies to have some fight in ‘em ;) 7 hours ago, Obsidian Plague said: literally all of the servers on doomseeker are either MM8BDM or "Complex Brutal Gigafart per gigashit Clusterfuck Doom Co-Op" and anything that isn't is just "overpowered team that can only use melee vs team that has access to guns" like hot damn i just want to shoot some dudes not play the hidden source(tm) why are you people making it this complicated to find a normal goddamn server where i can just frag some dudes I use a filter so that anything using “mm8bdm” as an IWAD doesn’t show up at all on my list. Makes finding actual Doom a hell of a lot easier. (ZDaemon and Odamex tend to be bigger fans of not-modded-beyond-recognition Doom as well, but sadly that means fewer players..) Also “Complex Gigashit” is a hilarious and accurate descriptor 4 hours ago, Kinsie said: I feel like I'd be more interested in online Classic Doom if there were more mapsets where the SSG was either rare or absent. It drowns out pretty much any other weapon to an even greater extent than in single-player, especially in CTF which just becomes a melee-range race between two teams to jump on each other's double-barrelled bayonets the least. I actually felt this way for years - but upon playing a few SSG-free mapsets (or using mods to achieve it) the result was boring, because the Doomguy can take a hell of a lot of Chaingun or single-barrel damage before dying, especially with armor, and rockets are so slow as to be almost worthless in most maps.. Servers usually clear out if there’s no SSG because the frags per minute count goes way down. What I found to be a better solution was making the SG and Chaingun not be pissweak by comparison - when they’re buffed to be basically on-par with the SSG, Doom’s DM gameplay benefits greatly! Takes some focus off the damn SSG without removing the fast frag nature of DM. 4 hours ago, printz said: Why do I keep seeing classic DeathMatch demos and such? To move ahead with the gameplay and offer more variety. Deathmatch 2.0 (items and weapons respawn) is, unfortunately, awful. Weapons are gone for a full 30 seconds, and since there’s a frag every 10 seconds in any respectable deathmatch, that means a lot of “two people firing the pea shooter helplessly at one another”. I understand what the logic was when they came up with it of course - but in practice it’s just awful. Even DM 3.0, which refers to weapons staying while items respawn, is still completely unbalanced, even in well balanced maps. It’s HELL for a newbie especially. The more experienced player eventually runs out of ammo in “old deathmatch”, so even the newbie scores a mercy kill here or there.. In DM 3.0 the more skilled player can keep track of 30 seconds in their head and be a complete item whore, zipping from medikit to medikit and ammo stash to ammo stash. It’s basically a way for players who are already skilled to make the game even more stacked against the weaker player, since the skilled guy never runs out of health and ammo. In short, Classic Deathmatch is the one that’s the most fair, which to me makes it the most fun. DM 3.0 is only fun against players of roughly the same skill level, and DM 2.0 is pretty much never fun. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
LexiMax Posted July 30, 2021 Multiplayer Doom is probably the reason I've stuck around the community as long as I have. The PvP modes are not only incredibly underrated, in my book they're actually more fun to play than any of the traditional more well known arena shooters like Quake and UT. Doomguy moves fast, the TTK is low and item control is less emphasized. There's nothing really like it. PvE is amazing too, but most folks kinda know that already that since single-player has such longevity. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
