Dweller Dark Posted August 4, 2021 As some of you know, I recently got Strife VE, and I've been experimenting with things in both VE and GZDoom. But I can't decide which is better for me to play it with, so I came here to figure that out. (One major thing, pertaining to Veteran Edition, is that I've been seeing screen-tearing on anything resembling a wall. It showed up when playing in GZDoom as well, but limiting the framerate to 75fps gets rid of it, and limiting it to 60fps doesn't work in VE or GZDoom.) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
P41R47 Posted August 4, 2021 (edited) I use VE pretty much all the time. It has all the enhancement and faithfullness i seek on my Doom Engine games. But that just me, that i like to play my first playthrought with all the enhancement, and then always as vanilla as possible, even on software renderer. One minor thing to make it even better would be to make the choices on the dialog screens actually selectable by the keyboard numbers. For the only thing i have GZDoom at hand is for one of the few mods of Strife out there. Edited August 4, 2021 by P41R47 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

I agree with you on the dialog choices being selectable by the number keys, it feels a bit weird not being able to do that. And being able to bind Run to a mouse button, since I use one of my sidebuttons for running on just about any game I can run in. The main downside for VE for me is the screen-tearing that I can't figure out, not even V-sync, capping the framerate, or downgrading to 35fps fixes it for some reason. Only using GZDoom and capping at 75fps does fix it. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
P41R47 Posted August 4, 2021 Ah, i didn't notice it since i didn't use free look back then. And now with 35 fps cap, lowest resolution and software render i couldn't notice it even if i tried hahaha Since its not game breaking for me, i would had overlooked it probably. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

It's not game-breaking for me, mainly just an annoyance, since my fps isn't affected by it for some reason. Veteran Edition on high resolution runs around 55fps or 110fps, depending on the framerate cap and/or V-sync settings. It might be my laptop graphics settings, but I don't know what setting would cause that if it's not happening with any other game. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Is it by some chance diagonal? 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

As far as I can tell, it's not diagonal, but it does happen when moving or looking left or right. Just booted up the game and tested in the starting room, moving side to side while staring at the green pipes/pillars has this horizontal screen-tearing that "cascades" down. It doesn't happen when looking up or down, though. Edit: Moving forward and backwards does not cause the effect either. Redneckerz Posted August 4, 2021 I love to see the visual enhancements made by Strife VE to a Doom port (VEDoom?) There is ZDRay and a GZDoom build enabling baked lightmaps, but it is unofficial and unfinished. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Apart from bloom and motion blur, I really like all the visual enhancements Strife VE has, they're really well done and perform well too. It'd be great to see that in GZDoom, provided it's all functional and whatnot. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Not sure what that is then, but it's system/driver related, not something Strife:VE is doing. Perhaps you have vsync forced off for the DWM or something other related behaviour. I don't know what a DWM is, but I can try testing Strife:VE with different vsync options turned on or of in my driver settings, there's regular vsync and something OpenGL specific that I never use. Edit: I went into driver settings and turned "Wait for vertical refresh" on, that fixed it with Veteran Edition's "Cap Framerate" setting enabled. Martanian Posted August 29, 2022 (edited) My beef is not getting 176 FPS WITH smooth joystick response. I would also like 4k video? oh, wait... this game came out.... buhhh... best emulator for DOS is a DOS computer. you can get a 486 on Amazon for less than 100. ALSO forgot my joystick is a Gravis Gamepad. It worked perfect with Commander Keen! Edited August 29, 2022 by Martanian 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
