continuum.mid Posted August 14, 2021 (edited) Double Impact - it's one of the few Doom episode replacements that has stuck around for several years after release, and for good reason. Created by mappers Ralphis and RottKing, the Cacoward-winning PWAD featured action-packed techbases and enthralling combat that fit entirely within the limitations of the original Doom. In addition to being released as a standalone PWAD, Double Impact became the fourth episode of the IWAD replacement Freedoom: Phase 1 in 2013, and in 2020 became an official add-on for the Unity port of Doom. One small flaw in this otherwise great WAD is its incomplete soundtrack. The original PWAD contained two original tracks and two remixes of Bobby Prince's music. In Freedoom, due to the limitations of the engine, Double Impact simply reuses music from the first three episodes, in the same pattern that Ultimate Doom's fourth episode did, meaning that the music selections fit only a little better than random chance. This project aims to fix that flaw by providing a new soundtrack for the WAD that can be used with both the PWAD and Freedoom: Phase 1, and which, in the spirit of Freedoom, is absolutely free to reuse and remix. This project is in RC status! Follow further developments at the release thread. Detailed status: E1M1/C4M1: Maintenance Area - "Liberate the Stars" by continuum.mid Original track: Ralphis - Untitled Freedoom track: Blueworrior - Untitled (E3M4) Both the original PWAD track and the original Freedoom track for this map are energetic and lively tunes that get you pumped for the rest of the WAD. Try to create something with similar energy. Note that Ralphis may decide to allow the original track to be included in this WAD; if that happens, your contribution may go unused. E1M2/C4M3: Central Computing - ""Space Spectre" by Matzu Original track: Ralphis - Dark Halls mashup Freedoom track: Blueworrior - Untitled (E3M3) Something downtempo, yet adrenaline-pumping. E1M3/C4M2: Research Complex - "Fight Harder... To Obtain A Better Victory" by R0rque; formerly claimed by Bobby Original track: Bobby Prince - Sinister Freedoom track: Blueworrior - Untitled (E3M2) This map is filled with dark corridors, traps, and switch puzzles, reminiscient of Doom's original E1M3 and E1M7. Try to tap into the darker side of Doom's soundtrack. E1M4/C4M4: Hydroponics Facility - "Deliberate Concealment" by continuum.mid (open to replacement) Original track: Bobby Prince - Suspense Freedoom track: Isotype - The Raging Sun (E1M5) E1M5/C4M5: Engineering Station - "Main Code" by Korp Original track: Bobby Prince - The Imp's Song Freedoom track: Mogul - Untitled (E2M7) E1M6/C4M6: Command Center - "Andromeda" by ZeMystic Original track: Bobby Prince - On the Hunt (music unchanged) Freedoom track: Velvetic - Let'em Burn (E2M4) E1M7/C4M7: Waste Treatment - "Ambiguity" by Korp Original track: Bobby Prince - Demons on the Prey (music unchanged) Freedoom track: jmickle - Untitled (E2M6) E1M8/C4M8: Launch Bay - "Vs. The Assault Quindecapod" by continuum.mid Original track: Ralphis - Sign of Evil mashup Freedoom track: Mogul - Untitled (E2M5) E1M9/C4M9: Operations - "The Deepest Secrets" by continuum.mid; formerly claimed by Korp Original track: Bobby Prince - The Demons from Adrian's Pen Freedoom track : Ivan Stanton - Derelict (E1M9) Perhaps on accident, or by fate, you've stumbled upon a part of the facility that holds a terrible secret. Both action packed metal and dark atmosphere fit here, but try to go for something suspenseful. INTRO(A): Title screen - "Triple Impact" by continuum.mid Original track: Bobby Prince - Doom title theme (unchanged) Freedoom track: picklehammer - Untitled, tobester - Untitled A very short tune - short enough to not be cut off by the demos - representing the badass that you play as. Note that this will not be included in the Freedoom version of the WAD. Two people may claim this slot, one submission will be used for INTRO and one for INTROA if both are suitable. VICTOR: Text screen - Unclaimed; formerly claimed by Biz Original track: Ralphis - Untitled Freedoom track: blackjar72 - Untitled Try to go for something a little more driving than most text screen themes. Something to signal your epic victory. This one's optional because both Freedoom and the original Double Impact PWAD already have original text screen themes. In particular, this will not be included in the Freedoom version of the WAD. However, it would be nice to get a full soundtrack replacement. INTER: Intermission screen - "Resprenselessness" by Korp Original track: Bobby Prince - Intermission from Doom (unchanged) Freedoom track: Mogul - Untitled Note that this will not be included in the Freedoom version of the WAD. Rules The rules here are a bit stricter than the Ultimate MIDI Pack, so sorry if they prevent you from contributing! Each contributor may claim no more than three slots. By default there are no deadlines; take as much time as you need within reason. However, you may ask to be assigned a deadline if you think that will help you to work faster. I will also assign you a deadline if it becomes clear that you are holding up the project. All tracks must be in standard MIDI format and under 96KiB in size. With the exception of the title screen MIDI, all MIDIs should be at least two minutes long. Since a lot of these levels are fairly long, it is recommended to make their MIDIs fairly long. I may reject a MIDI for reasons of quality; most likely, however, I'll just suggest improvements to it until it meets my (not-terribly-high) standards. Since I don't have proper tools for making edits to MIDIs, I may also require you to make small edits to volume. Per Ralphis, it is recommended to follow the general style of Bobby Prince's music for Doom and Doom II. Apart from the general style of Bobby Prince, you may not base your contribution(s) on any existing tracks from before the start of the project, unless those tracks are in the public domain and you are using them as an inspiration/base for remixing. Come up with your own melodies! This MIDI pack will be released under the Creative Commons Zero license. The license is equivalent to public domain, you will have no exclusive rights to the MIDI. I would encourage submitters to state their agreement to this clearly in the thread; if you do not state that you agree to release your contributions under CC0, you will be asked later. Alright, let's get going! dbimmidi-0.0.8.zip Edited May 11, 2023 by continuum.mid 25 Quote Share this post Link to post
continuum.mid Posted August 19, 2021 Added Korp's submission for E1M5/C4M5 Engineering Station. It's an excellent, groovy electronic piece. Seems all the MIDI musicians are busy lately, if you have time to contribute please do so! dbimmidi-0.0.2.zip 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Faceman2000 Posted August 24, 2021 (edited) How will this work? Isn’t E4 hardcoded to reuse midis from other levels? Edited August 24, 2021 by Faceman2000 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
TheNoob_Gamer Posted August 24, 2021 19 minutes ago, Faceman2000 said: Isn’t E4 hardcoded to reuse midis from other levels? I'm guessing there will be 2 versions - one for the regular PWAD version and one for the Freedoom E4 version. The latter will replace tracks from other levels. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
continuum.mid Posted August 24, 2021 1 hour ago, Faceman2000 said: How will this work? Isn’t E4 hardcoded to reuse midis from other levels? Yes, but thankfully it doesn't use any level's MIDI twice, so all of them can be replaced for a complete MIDI pack. I'm actually not 100% sure between that solution and reusing the MAPINFO from the Ultimate MIDI Pack; maybe I will actually have three WADs and use both methods. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted August 24, 2021 2 hours ago, Faceman2000 said: How will this work? Isn’t E4 hardcoded to reuse midis from other levels? In vanilla and Chocolate, yes. Pretty much every other port has dehardcoded it. I think even Crispy will read D_E4Mx music lumps if they exist, falling back to the reused track only if they don't. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

That’ll work well then. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

The Ultimate MIDI Pack uses the same solution for Thy Flesh Consumed; it has D_E4Mx lumps for Crispy Doom and several dialects of MAPINFO for other ports. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
rampancy Posted August 24, 2021 might want to ask admin to move this over to wads and mods, you would probably get way more attention for your project there. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Most of the MIDI Packs I know of (that is, all except the TNT and Eternal Doom ones) were in Doom General, and I was under the impression this was a more active form (but eh, you've been around longer.) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Sorry to everyone else for my lack of activity on this project; college happened and I have a bunch of new priorities stacked way above this one. @ZeMystic , any updates on E1M6/C4M6? 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
ZeMystic Posted September 21, 2021 I do actually, I have two concepts one that's almost finished, and one that I am starting on. I'll send them both to you when I get the chance 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

continuum.mid Posted October 11, 2021 Once again, apologies for my lack of activity on this project! I swear I have good personal reasons. I updated the in-progress ZIP with a couple of tracks that I received in the last two months - those being @ZeMystic's excellent E1/C4M6 track "Andromeda" and @Korp's intermission track "Resprenselessness." I also added my latest speedMIDI, "Deliberate Concealment," as a candidate track for E1/C4M4, but I'm not sure it's the best fit, so if you'd like to claim that slot and try making something that fits better, you are absolutely welcome to. dbimmidi-0.0.3.zip 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
continuum.mid Posted January 2, 2022 (edited) Sorry again for my lack of activity. If there are any other experienced MIDI artists around who have played Double Impact, either as a PWAD or as Freedoom's fourth episode, I'm considering handing this project off to someone else, since I am busy and also losing interest somewhat. But until then I'll continue to accept new submissions. @Korp @PalitomanI'd still appreciate any updates on your tracks, if you've worked on them Edited January 2, 2022 by northivanastan 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Korp Posted January 4, 2022 Ah, crap, i forgot about this project! Sorry bout that, ill get to finishing my track asap :) 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Palitoman Posted January 5, 2022 Oops, sorry @northivanastan. I will send a track until weekend. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
continuum.mid Posted January 28, 2022 It's taken me a while to have time for any work on this project, but I've added @Korp's new MIDI (submitted a couple weeks ago) for E1M7/C4M7 to the ZIP file. It's a great musical odyssey and really well-suited to a penultimate map. dbimmidi-0.0.4.zip Hopefully I can focus on this project more in the coming days. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
continuum.mid Posted February 1, 2022 (edited) Got another update for you all with a MIDI from M.3. (from the Freedoom discord), for E1M2/C4M3. It's similar to my "Deliberate Concealment," sorta like the theme of a spy thriller in space. dbimmidi-0.0.5.zip There's just one map slot left open, in addition to the title and text screen themes. If you have the time, ability, and willingness to contribute to the public domain, please claim them! Edited February 1, 2022 by northivanastan 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Faceman2000 Posted February 1, 2022 This new track is really nice! Might be my favorite so far. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
continuum.mid Posted March 21, 2023 (edited) It's been over a year, but I'm considering reviving this project now that I'm getting back into Doom. I haven't heard anything back from @Korp or @Bobby "J (is that the right Bobby? not sure) since they claimed their slots, or @Palitoman since sending a work-in-progress track, so unless they want to return to what would be year-old tracks at this point, those slots are back open. If anyone else wants to create a track for this, and is willing to dedicate it to the public domain, please post here or DM me. I may revisit some of the remaining maps to see if I can fill those myself. I'd also love to have a co-maintainer for this, as I'm still very busy with school and very much stuck in writer's block. continuum.mid Posted March 24, 2023 Claiming the title screen theme for myself, it'll be a short burst of synth energy to hype up the player. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

I might have missed it somewhere above, but would that jingle replace the existing one for phase1, or would the intro be exclusive to double impact as a standalone? 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

I'm not completely sure, but it's probably just going to be exclusive to standalone Double Impact. Freedoom has its own title jingle. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
continuum.mid Posted April 22, 2023 Taking control of E4M1 for now. It's going to be a continuation of the idea I had for the titlescreen track. Still would very much appreciate contributions, but I'll finish this project myself if I have to. My fault for mismanaging it. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
