Can I manipulate linedefs more precisely? (doom builder 2)

Recommended Posts

Like the title says. i'm trying to build a map, but there is an issue. When i place linedefs down, i can only put them on a grid of 64, which is not very handy, but afterwards, if I want to do something more precise, I have to change each vertices coordinates one by one.

Is there a better way to do this?

Thx for replying.

Press F5 for options, go to the control tab, type in "grid", check what the shortcuts for grid increase and decrease are (I would tell you but my keyboard layout is probably not the same as yours)

Edit -> Grid and Backdrop Setup

That lets you change the grid size directly. You can give it a hotkey (I use alt+shift+G). There are also a bunch of other grid options, like using a dynamic grid, increasing and decreasing the size, etc. And you can hold down SHIFT while dragging to not snap to a grid at all.

you can press [ or ] to change the grid size - i think that's default?

Can confirm that it is the default.

just keep this in mind: https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/123919-what-the-fresh-hell-is-this/ having too many off-grid vertices can cause some issues, so i wouldn't recommend getting too crazy too often. you can press [ or ] to change the grid size - i think that's default? maybe i set it like that idk lmao

Gonna keep that in mind :)

There are ways to manage this, but only if you're mad. I have a map where 97% of the vertices are off grid (60k lines) and while I've had to beat down quite a few node builder voids it can be done.

For some reason it is Doombuilder2 which is chosen by most newcomers to DOOM mapping, and

while one can build maps quite easily with DB2 there have been quite a few improvements

made to the editor over the years with iterations like

  • Doombuilder2 by doomimp (r1 to r1630)
  • GZDoom Builder by MaxEd (r1631 to R2791)
  • GZDoom Builder Bugfix by ZZYZX (R2792 to  R3090)
  • Ultimate Doom Builder by ZZYZX and biwa (r3091 to 3794)
  • and other programmers throughout the years

For example, you are wanting to alter the grid size. Starting with GZDB this can be done dynamically

by pressing Alt and scrolling the mouse wheel up/down, to change the grid from 1024 to 0.125.

Another important, almost invaluable, tool is event lines as I pointed out in this post.

If you want to use any of the other editors I do not know, but, if you want to stick with DB2 than

DoombuilderX would be a better choice. DBX is the same as DB2 but compiled to be a more robust

editor.

It's not their fault - it's because Doom Builder 2 is the first editor recommended on every wiki. If you search "Doom level editor", every site will recommend Doom Builder 2. The first site that comes up is doombuilder.com which calls Doom Builder "still the leading editor for Doom levels today". Yet nobody actually uses it anymore. People use better forks of it, hidden away on github sites. I think the entire community abandoned DB2 years ago and forgot to mention it.

A newcomer will probably read a page like this:

https://doom.fandom.com/wiki/Choosing_a_level_editor

Or this:

https://zdoom.org/wiki/Editing_tools

These pages purport to be up to date for 2021, but they don't even mention the improved versions of DB that DOOM mapping enthusiast listed. It's been like ten years!

I used Doom Builder 2 for days before learning that it's not actually as popular as its prominence in tutorials might suggest. It's a cruel beginner's trap. Somebody with accounts on the wikis should really update them.
