Would you care if you'd be the bad guy in Doom?

Recommended Posts

In DooM, you have always been the good guy, after you assaulted the officer. But if doomguy would have learned nothing and continue to be a bad guy, would you think the game would be a piece of shit, or would you not care?

In doom 3, you can actually shoot people that are not enemies in a far distance. (Or at least with the dhewm 3 engine)

I believe you can do that in vanilla Doom 3 as well. Well, you can gib them with a flashlight at any rate.

Is it even possible to be the bad guy when your enemies are demons? It would probably just end up feeling like Blood does.

The only way that I can imagine an evil Doom Marine, would be some kind of campaign where the goal it's to search some kind of Hell Artifact and instead of destroy it or use it to close hell doors, you just use it to keep Fragin enemies and killing every one on your path. Don't care if marines tropes are in danger, you do you for killing anything.

That almost don't fits because, almost everything Doom it's just a 1 man vs the Demons, and even where the Doom Marine or Slayer it's with others people, he just mostly ignore or help them. Mostly Doom 3 Marine and Doom Slayer.

Was thinking exactly about that.

He likely wouldn’t have even been sent to Mars and its moons if he were a bad person because he would’ve willingly shot the unarmed and non-combatant civilians he was ordered to kill in the first place. However, doomguy being left on Earth means he would’ve been able to defend during the invasion, and not stuck all the way on the moons of Mars, so even if he has poor morals, he would’ve been a benefit here on Earth because he clearly is smarter than any other space marine at killing demons.

I think what is more likely is that doomguy (the “good” one from the games I mean) would have mental problems after all this stuff going on. He’d likely need to be rehabilitated to come back to regular life on earth (if that ever came back to begin with after Doom II).

So he could possibly do things that would be seen as “bad” due to his mental health. That’s probably why in Doom 64 he chooses to remain in hell. There’s nowhere else he could be and be able to live normally, with all the insane thoughts and voices in his head, the damage done to his body and mind from fighting demons in and out of Hell, it would be very hard for him to survive “like normal” back on earth.

Eh, I don't think doomguy could classify as 'good' or 'evil'; personally, I think it depends on your views, mainly since doomguy is an empty slot for the player to project onto. But, sometimes it feels more like he is chaotic neutral, rather then good.

In Doom 2 map 07 he learns that demons are holding humans from escaping earth through starports and saves them in the factory map. What else does that leave to speculation? He saved as many humans as he could and actively avenges the fallen to the end. Can't get any more good than that. Him just fighting demons in the other games doesn't matter because there is nothing left with him beside demons.

Yes this is text written in giant red font as you play the game.

I have absolutely no clue where you would get the idea that Doomguy could ever be called "bad". Even in the new games where he's arguably quite nuts, his underlying drive is protect Earth and humans, end demons by any means necessary. Even in his madness his protective instincts are incredibly strong.

If by chance he would lose that it would completely kill the spirit of the series.

I don't see it working. In Doom you fight demons, agents of the devil, and there's no chance you can be the bad guy when your greatest enemy has evil in his name. If you're not fighting demons, then it's not going to feel like much of a doom game, and it certainly isn't going to if they're going to put in a "press X to authorise the UAC air strike on the orphanage" and do something else to force you to act evil. Might work in some other game, but not this one, even in Duke, you can act as evil as the game lets you, but you're still saving the world and fighting a much worse evil so a couple dead strippers is probably not going to be enough to recontextualise things.

Doomguy being evil doesn't work, but a Doom game where you play as some sort of demon warrior with Hell-themed weapons and abilities would be pretty cool since it would be an opportunity to do things differently from a gameplay perspective. Demons already in-fight each other, so maybe that can be the story setting.

Painkiller had an expansion where you played as Belial, a half-demon and half-angel, so the concept can probably work in other games (and maybe be better realized if made from scratch rather than just an expansion).

@AtimZarr1 or a knight sentinel that was loyal to the maykrs fighting wars against hell but began transforming to a corrupted Maraurder to then start terminating previous brothers and joins Hell's campaigns to conquer new worlds.

But I guess this is about Doom guy turning evil so... he dies in Hell and soul corrupted or body is possessed and starts killing the good guys.

Or Doom guy becomes insane still thinking he is killing Demons but he is slaughtering his fellow marines.

Making wads where you play in the morally grey zone is kinda fun. In UAC Rebellion you play as a marine who is privy to insider info about how the UAC is conducting experiments on "willing" soldiers who aren't really willing, alongside experimenting with interdimensional travel which they're using to collect an "army" of demons. The player character is pretty insane, so he just decides to destroy all 15 UAC bases (or as few as 10 depending which path you take) with many human guards - who don't know any better - getting actively murdered in the process.

He ends up killing hundreds basically-innocent of UAC personnel with the end goal of flat out destroying all traces of their operations. So he slaughters damn near a thousand men but in the end saves Earth from the totalitarian heel of the UAC and the potentially dire consequences of bringing Hell to Earth as an unbridled army. Very questionable morally, the type of character to go scrambling omelettes to make eggs.

I mean you are not a good guy as it is. I would say you are more of the Anti Hero than a Hero as you do some awful things and cause chaos in your wake but all in the sake of whats good. So honestly it would kind of be bad unless handled correctly.

I was thinking of UAC Rebellion too. Personally when I played it, I pretended that I was the big bad. Like not just doing morally bad things for a good cause, like being down right wrong about what the UAC was doing and just killing stuff for no good reason. With wads, it's easier.

With the base game however, it's kinda really really hard to be the bad guy if your enemies are literally "kill everything" demons. Seriously, you could be the worse human on the planet but you'd still look like the good guy if your enemy was a literal demon.

I think without drastically changing the plot like @Chezza mentioned, it would be hard to be evil and still fight hellspawn. At most you can probably make the hellspawn more human and silly and the humans more annoying so that the player feels more inclined to side with the hellspawn. Like going through a techbase but instead of the demons using the computers to do demon stuff, they were just instead having a LAN party; finding notes about demons trying to build a new Cyberdemon, not to bolster their ranks or make a new upgraded weapon super soldier, but because their Hell Knight pal idolizes Cyberdemons so they're trying to see how they can make him into one; A group of imps and demons getting together and hosting a slumber party; two barons teaming up not to be the first boss but to cause general mischief like painting fake doors and bookshelves; an imp trying to impress a female imp. etc.

I really can't think of any times the Doomguy did something "bad", and definitely nothing evil. Being angry doesn't really count I don't think, he's all about killing hellspawn to save humanity. Heck, at the end of Doom2, the text strongly implies Doomguy finds rebuilding Earth is a lot more fun than ruining it was, which to me suggests he only really gets a sense of joy from doing positive things. Just crumbs I know, but he's pretty obviously a good dude.

I know of some wads here on DW where you play as a demon of your choice and have to stop (a) UAC marine(s) from invading doom levels

I'm sure mods could be made in both DOOM 2 and DOOM 3 where the monsters are

somehow "good" and doomguy is somehow "bad"...

maybe mods that are inspired by games like dungeon keeper or overlord

I think it could be fun to be the bad guy... From Army of Darkness: "I may be baaaad, but it feels gooood"

As bad as the demons are, Doomguy is always worse, once we the users can figure out how to use his abilities to beat a given map or a given game. I don't typically think of Doomguy as "good". Lucky for us, he doesn't like demons, or he does, unluckily for them. I'm just relieved that he doesn't seem to mind us.
