Egg Boy Posted August 26, 2021 (edited) I think Doom is pretty camp and goofy. Quake, for as doom-like as its combat is, could not be further from Doom, aesthetically. Quake's atmosphere is still heavy 25 years later, one of the best artstyles ever worked into a game. To me, even the low poly models are part of that atmosphere, working with the abstract level design to create this distinct feel that really could not possibly be replicated with HD models and textures. Quake is Grungy, and though it was a visual marvel for the time, I think its now LoFi aesthetic works even better. That's not to say I think Quake is scary, or that it ever frightened me (it didn't), but it has an unmatched and wholly unique look that even modern indie developers fail to capture. Toad Posted August 26, 2021 I sadly didn't play doom or quake at a very young age, I got doom for my 16th birthday, so the being scared cuz I was a kid was already gone lol 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
hybridial Posted August 26, 2021 (edited) I find both somewhat more effective at being atmospheric and unsettling than a lot of horror videogames now, which I think comes down to those games trying far too hard and relying on tropes that are very overdone at this point. I think this is further illustrated by the fact I think Dusk worked better than your Outlasts or your Amnesias. But I am funny when it comes to horror. Of course with Doom it depends on the soundtrack, but the PSX soundtrack works, or some of the excellent custom midis I've heard. Grandfather Clocktower by Viscra Maelstrom, used in The Visage of Time in TNT Revolution was brilliant and made that level super creepy. sh-h-h Posted August 26, 2021 The pinky sound (which is always be pinky sound, despite used by many other demons as well) frightened me in E1M3's yellow key room. And pinky frightened me generally. Also it was scary to play Hangar in UV first. Shotgunners everywhere. No other map has that big gap between the medium and the hard skill. Other frightening stuff: the octabrain in Duke Nukem 3D. And the battlelord boss in Abyss. The gil beast in Shipwrecked in Blood when they were underwater. So much more frightening than on the dry where they are a joke. And the phantasm that blew you away in Overlooked Hotel. And then Half Life, the king of frightening. From simple headcrabs through barnacles to the effin' ichtyosaur. And more or less everything there. I never liked Quake, and stopped playing it very early. The polygons were just simply ugly and the levels were just brown and more brown. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
LadyMistDragon Posted August 26, 2021 (edited) Not really, except for that one moment in E1M9. You know...that moment where the lift raises up, you're in an area that is the opposite of what you've traveled through in more ways than one. Take your first step, and suddenly, the pillars in front of you raise, revealing the Barons of Hell inside deep-red cubes., along with an incredibly high-pitched, monstrous howl. I think I may have genuinely jumped. For the most part though, I can't think of anything else that was truly scary. Doom just doesn't seem too realistic an environment in any sense. Quake was never scary for me, probably because the music refused to play. But the only goofy thing was the overly large teeth of the fiends, shamblers, and vores, but that was at least partly due to the tech limit (also, someone thought it just looked cool, most likely). MemeMind Posted August 26, 2021 Doom is very Campy and Goofy while still having some horror/serious elements. Quake is all horror and serious. That is my one real worry about a new Quake game and that is that they will add goofyness to quake. Im fine with that in the new Doom games but there is no place for that in Quake. (Minus Easter eggs and secrets btw) 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
