McDonald's Canada fails spectacularly on Twitter

Recommended Posts

It all started with this tweet:

What happened next was exactly what I could have told anyone would happen; McPizza started trending. Those of us that are old enough remember McPizza fondly. It was cheesy, crispy, and its crust had a light buttery aftertaste. It wasn't the best pizza in the world by any stretch, but it was unique and inexpensive. McPizza was a big hit back in the 90s but unfortunately was discontinued because it took 11 minutes to prepare and McDonald's wanted to preserve their reputation as a fast-food chain. Right now the only place in the world you can get McPizza is at one location in Orlando Florida.

The funny thing is, my mind didn't immediately go to McPizza. My mind went to McDonald's Chicken Fajitas. Those things were mack. Imagine onions, green peppers, tomatoes, cheese, and seasoned chicken wrapped in a soft tortilla. Two for just $2.99 Canadian.

So naturally, everyone's imaginations were running wild. But we all knew it wasn't going to be McPizza, which put a damper on everything. The prevalent sentiment on Twitter was: "Meh, I know we're not getting McPizza again, but at least the McRib is coming back."

And then after a series of subtle hints as to what the big reveal was, we got this today:

Man, talk about setting yourself up for failure. Understandably the reaction has been extremely negative, and yet whoever is running the account is continuing to Tweet like this announcement was a huge success, even though everyone is roasting whoever is operating the account. How could anybody not see this coming?

I'm reminded of when a few months ago AEW kept teasing a huge, main event signing. Naturally, everyone's minds went to Brock Lesnar and CM Punk. When Christian Cage came out as the big reveal at AEW Revolution, his entrance was met with disappointment and silence. And that was a real shame because Christian Cage is a fantastic talent, but when you have everyone expecting either CM Punk or Brock Lesnar, there's bound to be some disappointment. If Christian Cage had just instead come out without any prior teases about a big main event signing, his reception would have been great.

In conclusion, be careful when it comes to building anticipation for something. When you allow people's imaginations to run wild and then underdeliver on their expectations, the outcome is never going to be positive.

Anyone who follows the gaming world would understand the risk of hyping a product or reveal.

Never heard of the McPizza, not sure if it was in Australia.

But I do miss the McRoo Burger (patty made with Kanagroo meat) and the Skippy Mcnuggets (also Kanagroo). They also sold the McCroc Shake which was just a chocolate milkshake but with pieces of chocolate cookie blended in.

Twitter is a hellhole

Just like any social media. My favorite kind of user is that person who takes advantage of the anonymity of the internet to insult people and be an overall jerk whereas they wouldn't be behaving like a goddamn animal in a normal situation, that and people who like to virtue signal, those are annoying too.

It’s a good thing Doomworld’s local fast food newsie was on the case to report this spectacular fail to us all!

The moral of the story is sound, that much I will say. Hype as a concept is inextricably linked to failure. When hype “works”, it’s honest and forthright - everyone knows what they’re hyped for. If hype is shrouded in mystery, disappointment soon follows!

Hello Florida Man! We make the headlines a lot!

I've lived in Florida all my life, West Palm for 4 years, Saint Augustine for 22. Florida is certainly an interesting place. You get a totally different experience from Saint Augustine just by driving 30 minutes up the road to Jacksonville or a couple hours south to Orlando.

What's really weird though is I thought I remembered reading that you're from Australia?! Not sure where I got that from, and the fact that you don't have an Australian accent confused me quite a bit. Pretty cool though! What city did you live in, if you don't mind me asking of course?

Indeed brother. Better to temper expectations and be pleasantly surprised than get over excited and get crushed.

If there is one thing I despise more than Twitter, it's Corporate Twitter.

Wendy's America and Arby's America's Twitter accounts are both pretty good.

KFC Gaming is an international embarrassment though. Fuck that account.

The last ~15 Years Companies tried so often to hype every Product, that when it came up i was thinking: "Aaaaah, a Hype, let's go the other Direction and ignore this." .

It helped a lot :)

I don't eat at McDonald's, don't like the food, but the radio ads for this can piss right off. I've been running a combine for harvest and holy shit it's one of the worst ads on the local stations right now. It almost reaches the levels of annoying that only real estate agents are typically able to attain.

"Everyone loves McDonald's! Everyone loves Spicy McNuggets! Pretentious assumption about how much you love McDonald's and Spicy McNuggets! You probably stopped listening because you can't stop thinking about how excited you are about Spicy McNuggets!"

It actually says something along the lines of "You probably stopped listening because you are excited about Spicy McNuggets!"

I had no idea McPizza was a thing. It sure wasn't in Brazil I don't think. There was this local fast food chain though called Bob's (ironically enough, started by some Canadian dude in the 80s) and they used to sell these awesome hot dogs with cheese when I was a kiddo. They just disappeared tho. What I'm trying to say I think is I understand your pain.

Am I the only one who was thinking:

?

Not a fan of McDs anyway.  Would take just about any other fast food over that.
