What do you think of Doom 3?

Thanks for the info, but what does "classical DOOM" have to do with the fact that someone prefers DOOM 3?

Also, have you ever stopped to consider that if the series would have ended with the magic "classical DOOM" games, there probably wouldn't be nearly as many members on this forum today? Many members here got into wadding and modding after 2016 and Eternal released. It's possible that those games wouldn't have come to fruition without DOOM 3.

Because Doom 3 used the name of Doom to have people play it. Where does the name Doom come from?

It comes from Doom 1 and Doom 2. I played Doom 3. Why? Because the name Doom was used for it. If not, I wouldn't have given a damn.

The game sold under the name of Doom.

You can't be serious. This forum wouldn't have existed if it hadn't been for classical Doom.

Why can't they be serious? Doom 3 is a good game and there's probably lots of people that like it best.

Doom 3 is... eh... OK. I really couldn't get into it, so I haven't even finished the game... maybe someday. I just remember playing some of the beginning, and jumping in on one random boss fight when my brother was struggling with it.... we both couldn't defeat it then found out it was actually easy, we just didn't notice the vulnerability 'till later lol.

"Doom 16 wouldn't have happened without Doom 3" is a strange take because no Doom game released in 13 year since Doom 3's release. It's like Superman 4, it flat out killed the series for years. And 2016 was supposed to be Doom 4 which was basically Call of Doomty so I don't get it.

Isn't there a better place for such topics?

Probable point of this must be to ask this question to real (classic) Doom lovers. We, real Doom lovers, are in classic Doom section.

Didn’t play it till the BFg version on the Xbox but did like it mostly despite it feeling different to what expect from a doom game. Didn't and still don’t like monsters that teleport in as opposed to being there or that the corpses disappear and didn’t pay much attention to story and cant remember getting a single locker code haha but atmosphere was good and liked it

I'd like the game more if its enemy encounters weren't so repetitive and predictable. The first time an imp jump slashes you as you open a door, you'll likely jump out of fright. But by the fourth time or so it happens, it stops being surprising and you'll have since then learned to run backwards after opening every door and dodge the imp's attack.

Pick an item up? Two imps will spawn: one in front of you and one behind you, in the hallway you came from. Run up to the imps and shotgun their bodies up from one feet apart. Rinse and repeat. Maybe an enemy closet will be involved too.

Doom 3 tried to be a horror game and while the game's looks manage to sell a very foreboding atmosphere, the gameplay isn't as successful just because the game constantly tries using the same tricks. By the time you pick them up, the game loses its magic.

What's a "real" Doom lover?

I like classic Doom too.

I love it as a pitch. I think it made alot of really hard decisions for me to enjoy, such as the famous Shotgun, and cinematic approach to narrative. I'd love a version that fixed the shotgun (or really, all the weapon/monster balance across the board) and changed all the cutscenes into scripted sequences ala Half-Life, where you stay in first person and have freedom of movement, with the story happening around you.

However, the ideas that went into it I thought were great, and the original graphics and sound design still hold up for me. I treat it as kind of an experimental era in the series, lament it's designation as a main installment, but enjoy it when I treat it as a part of the story as a whole. (Headcanon places it as a distant prequel to the primary setting Doom 2016, with a different protagonist.)

A real Doom lover loves the real Doom, which is the classic one.

I've been a lifelong fan of Doom since I was first introduced to it all the way back in 1993. So I'm definitely a "Doom Lover" going by your reasoning. I also love DOOM 3 and it's expansion packs. So what, does that make me not a true "Doom lover?" Does it make me a "Doom unlover?"

How dare you say something like that. Do you feel any guilt or remorse? You must have a masters or doctorate to be making such bold claims.

Despicable.

Apologize for untruth!

I love Doom 3.

The Depiction of Hell and what sht is going on is without compromisses.

Love the reimaginated Demons.

Light, Shadows and Sound still hold up perfectly, just install some HD-Textures and it looks up to date.

I like the Tension that causes the forced Use of the Torchlight.

I don't like the BFG Edition so much, feels crippled in many Ways.

Sound Design is worse, Effects turned down etc.

Oh and the worst Thing, you can not kill "Corpses" with the Torch, so they will definitivly stand up :P

I love it for 2 reasons.

Firstly Doom 3 and the ROE expansion were the first Doom games I ever played so I kind of developed my relationship with Doom because of the so called black sheep of the series.

Secondly I love the atmospere and the story it tries to tell, yeah I know it starts slow and all that but I never actually cared I mean all 3A games these days start like that (don't they?), it provides some excellent visuals for its time and the best Hell levels and in the final third of the game it kind of feels like the classic Doom games cause you'll be spending the majority of your time fighting...

Oh and one more thing... the Sir Antony Hopkins looalike Dr. Betruger is a hell of a villain.

But all in all I think that the only place were we all Doom fans can agree is that Doom 3 had some pretty nice visuals for the time it came out, otherwise I think its more between if you hate or like the game.

something about doom 3 that I really liked is the way the hell growth starts creeping into the levels. It really captures the warped atmosphere that episode 2 of Doom had, with the stuff like flesh blocks rising and falling and all that. It was an element sorely missing from Doom 2016 imo, though they did bring it back in Eternal with places like the Super Gore Nest level.

It was only after first playing the BFG edition that I joined this forum and rekindled my passion for classic Doom, learned all about mapping, modding, midi, and all the great games and projects related to it. Without Doom 3 who knows what I would be doing with my free time. I like to think that without Doom 3 I'd be a greasy burnout with missing fingers who's only escape from a bleak reality is daytime television.

As for Doom 3 itself, it's one of my favorites and I play it all the time. Memorable campy story, great atmosphere and environmental sound design; it really sits in it's own category in terms of style, despite hitting a lot of beats from Half-Life. It's also one of my favorite games to tweak and balance for my own tastes, and has inspired me to buy a field recorder and microphone to build my own sound library, as well as learning about sound design in general. I took a few sound design classes in college, but Doom 3 is a great game to practice with.

For me, the absolute low point of Doom, and fairly close to the low point of Id Software.

It just isn't fun for me to play, and I actually think the aesthetics are pretty bad. I mean the quality of the graphics for the time I know is very high, but it's dated like milk for me, it just looks like plastic and the enemy designs are boring. I am very glad that Doom 2016 and Eternal at least look more like Doom 1 and 2 with enemy designs and such.
