How do I make faux 3D bridges with a lattice

I have searched and searched but I cannot find a tutorial that seems to work for me. I can make a normal faux 3D bridge but the moment I try to add that lattice pattern to make it look more solid, everything breaks apart. I can't find any tutorials where it seems to work. please help.

I guess it's for original Doom/Boom format?
