xdude_gamer Posted September 7, 2021 Every time I try to drag a wad or deh file, it just opens up the same old Doom II. And it doesn't save any of my fricking controls!!! 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Teo Slayer Posted September 7, 2021 I don't use Choco Doom, so I can't help. Sorry dude 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
xdude_gamer Posted September 7, 2021 Me either I use GZDoom because it ACTUALLY WORKS AND IS EASY 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Teo Slayer Posted September 7, 2021 GZDoom is way easier to use. It can run almost every run and it has a better engine But the only problem, it lags 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

That'd be a nice thing to know how to do though. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Check if you have any non-latin characters in your folder names like "š" or "ā", so basically any characters that aren't in the English language. I had a similar problem with a lot of source ports and changing those characters fixed it. Hope this helps. Edited September 7, 2021 by Worriedidiot 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

But then how do I play custom wads made for Doom or Doom 2? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

You can, actually, though since the netcode isn't client/server, it's a bit more complex to set up. cf. this forum for further info; it's not really something I ever bothered with personally. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
xdude_gamer Posted September 7, 2021 Like playing Alien Vendetta or Memento Mori, made for Doom 2. It's just not working for me! 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Astronomical Posted September 7, 2021 I personally use chocolate doom for vanilla testing, what I would recommend crispy doom as it supports draging and droping on the exe, or to use batchfiles. Example Chocolate-doom -merge AV.WAD -deh AV.DEH Put this in a text file (replace alien vendetta with whatever wad/dehacked file is used for the wad in question), change the name of the textfile to end with .bat, and double click the file you created. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Doomkid Posted September 7, 2021 File names can't be longer than 8 characters. So if you pop MM.wad and MMMUS.wad in your Chocolate Doom folder, go to Setup and select Doom2 as the game, then for paramaters it's "-file mm.wad mmmus.wad" and you can add several wads at a time, or add Dehacked files using "-deh name.deh", replacing name with the actual name of course. Hopefully this helps! 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
TheMagicMushroomMan Posted September 7, 2021 (edited) Probably a dumb question, but if you're looking for something more faithful than ZDoom, have you tried Crispy or PrBoom? I'd personally recommend Crispy over Choco, but that's just me. Edited September 7, 2021 by TheMagicMushroomMan 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

hobomaster22 Posted September 7, 2021 Easier to use something like Doom Launcher instead of fiddling with batch files. It will automatically add dehacked files if they are packaged in the zip. 6 Quote Share this post Link to post
Doomkid Posted September 7, 2021 Gotta echo hobomaster, Doom Launcher makes life a lot easier. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

For vanilla testing chocolate doom is the only port that actually emulates vanilla compatibility, so if they need something because they want to make a wad for the vanilla exe, I would recommend that they learn how to use chocolate doom. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
DJVCardMaster Posted September 7, 2021 I create a direct access to the Chocolate Doom with extra command line parameters such as "-IWAD DOOM.wad" or "-IWAD DOOM2.wad" and then "-file mywad.wad", mywad being the wad I want to play, also if some wad uses a DEHACKED patch, there is an extra command called "-deh mydeh.wad" you can add as many files as you want, if I'm not mistaken. Rudimentary solution I guess, but that's what I do. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Go to your chocolate doom folder: you can use "cd" to go through folder you want, and "cd.." to go back from previous folder. If your chocolate doom is in, say, D: then type "d:". If you managed to find Chocolate Doom folder, then type these command: chocolate-doom.exe -iwad [INSERT_IWAD_FILENAME_HERE].wad -file [INSERT_THE_PWAD_NAME_HERE].wad -deh [INSERT_DEH_PATCH_NAME_HERE] (if you want to only play with custom wad and deh patch) alternatively, you can download some launchers like Doom Explorer. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

This is true, but from OP's post I gather that they are mainly interested in just playing some wads. Becoming at least somewhat familiar with each popular source port is pretty vital as mapper, but obviously less so for an average player or casual DOOMer. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

As mentioned, Doom Launcher. The last one i tried is this Mini Launcher. It is small and works fine. https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/121404-mdl-mini-doom-launcher/?tab=comments#comment-2298098 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
