The second stage of EoSD is one of my earliest and fondest memories of Touhou, whenever I think of Touhou I immediately think of this stage and Cirno's boss battle music. No other game series, with the exception of Doom has kept me captivated for so long and its always a series I know I can comeback to whenever life gets rough and just forget about my problems for a while.

 

Anyways happy Cirno day everyone, hope its a good one.

i tend to agree but touhou 9.5 is just about the coolest "STG" ever lol

For short, Touhou is one of the most acclaimed series of the indie bullet hell scene.
It has a lot of entries and a good amount of spin-off.
The interesting thing about it, is that it has a cast of reccuring characters and are pretty much interesting on design and development wise.
Apparently, for some reason, 9/9 seems to be the day of the character named Cirno.
If you like RPGs, there is a good crossover style game called Touhou Mother, meshing together Touhous characters and Earthbound style quirkyness and gameplay, and has the approval of the creator of the original Touhou serie.
The sole author of this serie of games make all alone, and after soo many entries that are rounded above the 10 if i'm not wrong, the games are still inovative gameplay wise, with a new idea and new ways of showing new enemies attack and game mechanism.

Its a great serie for sure.
But as Ex-Ajora said, there are a lot of series on the indie bullet hell scene.

My personal favorite is Hellsinker.

Its a really cryptic game, and its not recommended at all for newcomers.

There's also Luna Nights which is a very good Metroidvania Touhou fangame. You play as Sakuya, the Scarlet Devil Mansion's head maid. Remilia has sent Sakuya into an alternative world which looks like Gensokyo. In this world, Sakuya's powers are sealed which means she has to go on foot.

Tbh be honest, none of the touhous would be in my top ten shmups, but arcade shmups tend not to have any interesting characters tbh. With battle garrega you're limited to the two faceless pilot player characters or stuff like "I bet the pilot of Black Heart is a complete bastard". With dodonpachi you get the evil general (eh), the evil bee leader (awesome), the element dolls from doj (mixed) and a collection of creepy sex dolls from dfk and sdoj. Other Raizing games have a bunch of characters but often the cool ones are either only in the supplementary materials (bashinet, sobut, envy, blunt) or they're a really bad character to play as (birthday, nirvana, chitta).

 

Whereas touhou has a bunch of characters on offer, and they're all bosses so you're pretty much gonna see them if you play the game they're in.

 

I guess the closest thing to touhou in terms of offering lots of cool boss characters is actually the Darius series. What a strange thought.

Go to the player settings and set your skin to one of your choice. It's designed for Zandronum so it doesn't work with GZDoom, unfortunately.
