Entryway for me because of nostalgia. Doom II was my first gaming experience in the 90s. Like others have said here the stairs in the beginning are iconic and seared into my memory.

I agree with the overall gist of your post @Apprentice, though having played both in DM a fair bit, the shareware version of Hangar is really boring and lame in DM, but the UD version is at least “pretty decent”. Granted, that’s just DM, I can see how it would be considered broken in its final state for SP.

Definitely Hangar. Hangar is more iconic and more fun than Entryway. Also the music of Hangar is much better than Entryway, but that may be because I've the Entryway midi a thousand times.

Entryway is pretty boring, at least Hangar has a more interesting layout.

 

Entryway looks pretty boring, too, showing a general trend of Doom 2 IWAD levels using too much brown.

 

Entryway's pretty cool for deathmatch, though, but I'm glad the first levels of mapsets made for DWANGO build upon it to make even better deathmatch maps.

the shareware and UD e1m1 have different deathmatch item placement?

Here is how I believe E1M1 will play better in deathmatch then what we got with version 1.9. It may not be perfect but still it's my take on how it can be improved for deathmatch. I do like to know your thoughts about it . . .

"Running From Evil" is objectively better than "At Doom's Gate" (come on, it's not like E1M1 replacements are non-existent) but Hanger is the more the iconic, fun map. Entryway has Sandy Petersen's usual approach to color, and thusly hands the crown to Hanger without hardly trying (other than the opening room, which was  ripped for Doom 64's Staging Area).

Yep! The main difference is in the shareware version, there's a rocket launcher in the outside nukage pool (with the blue armor) and a shotgun in the secret area of the zig-zag nukage room. If you spawn in the blue carpet area at the start, you have to run all the way to the opposite ends of the map for a gun, and if there's 2-3 other people playing as well, it means you're probably dead. Nothing to defend yourself with but the lame pea shooter.. Also, there's only one path from the start of the map to the end of the map.

 

In the UD version, there's a shotgun in the blue carpet room, and there's a switch opening a door to the outside area, so you can also get the RL quickly, or if the opponent is already outside, you can take the other "normal" path through the computer room. It makes the map way better having multiple paths to choose and not having to run around forever with the pea shooter.

This looks like it would flow really smoothly in DM. It's basically what Dwango5 Map01 is to Entryway. Allows players to do a complete circuit rather than coming to dead ends!

For Single-Player/Coop/Survival: Hangar

 

For Deathmatch/Duel: Entryway (only because Hangar and Doom/Ultimate Doom has no SSG and less weapon variety)

On a serous note, I personally vote D2's Entryway as I love how well the map is designed and the bounty of secret goodies inside. :3

Entryway, while Hanger has a better layout, Entryway starts with a chainsaw and gets you an easy Rocket Launcher!


...that and it's music is a banger
