HELP! Error when opening WhackEd 4!

Recommended Posts

This is the only reason why I made a Doomworld forum account. I want to start doom modding on Whacked4 but everytime I launch the .exe file (I tried both the Setup and the .7z archive, error didn't change/go away) I am greeted with this error.

What Operating System do you use?

What version of Whacked4 do you use?

Has this happened before?

Did you get an official version? (e.g. https://www.teamhellspawn.com/exl/whacked4/)

Do you have all the required DLLs?

Is your computer 32bit, or 64bit?

What versions of Whacked4 do you use?

Turns out that Python 3.9, which WhackEd uses, no longer supports Windows 7. Their reasoning being that Microsoft doesn't support it anymore either. Are you using Windows 7 by any chance?

Try using the repair tool that Windows 10 (assuming you use win10) has. As from what I have read is a common dll. error when either using Virtual Box, or some software (like antiviruses) decided to delete that .dll file.

Or when in doubt, install Virtual C++ runtimes.

I do have to say that I am not a professional and perhaps you should ask the devs of whacked.  So take these suggestion with a huge grain of salt!!!

I'm on Windows 11 currently, but I have Win7 32bit SP1 on remote desktop and can confirm that Whacked4 works fine on Win7, at least from this end.

It didn't require anything special, no compatibility or extra run times. Just extracted and ran..

I'd check and make sure your Windows is up to date, or at least SP1.

I get a similar error when I use the start menu shortcut. I never figured out why, but it starts fine if I just run whacked4.exe directly, or make my own shortcut/pin to taskbar. Similarly, if I try to use the windows file association to automatically open a .whacked file, I get the same error. I have no idea why this happens because the start menu shortcut does point to the correct .exe file. Either way, I would try extracting the .7z to a new folder (i.e. don't overwrite the old installation) and running the program from there.
